Iron Man Sequels War Machine Spinoff

I'd rather see him in The Avengers than in a spin-off to be honest.

Hrm. This could go either way....but I agree with Prison Mike.

Besides...his origin story was told already.

I hope news of a War Machine spinoff movie don't happen to be like the Venom spinoff movie, a rumor, or a canceled project

And since his origin was already told, there's no need to do it all over for this movie

Same here, sidekicks and villains should never get their own spinoffs, making them the main focus in a movie ruins their characters.

Would be very surprised if this ever made it past the script stage, really doubt he could hold his own movie.

I must be the only one, but I really think a War Machine spin-off has potential.

Rhodey hasn't been well-developed individually in the MCU, and this would give the chance for that. Movie Rhodey has been established as very pro-military chain of command, whereas comic Rhodey has been a little more gung-ho. A spin-off film would allow for character growth and us to see him become more like his comic counterpart.

And there are good comic stories for them to riff of of, such as Chuck Austen's U.S. War Machine, in which Rhodey and the War Machine armor is enlisted by Nick Fury to fight A.I.M. in a Special Operations unit unbeknowst to Stark. Or a storyline from War Machine's 90's solo series, wherein Rhodes is spurred to action by SHIELD and the UN's inaction during an ethnic conflict in the fictional African country of Imaya. If they used this second storyline, it then opens the door for introducing Black Panther and Wakanda as well.

And as we saw in the coda of Iron Man 2, Fury wants the IM technology involved with Avengers, but not Stark himself. Rhodes is trained in the use of the Iron Man suit, so a sensible storyline connection is already there for a WM spin-off to happen.

Cheadle can act, but I don't know how I feel about this idea.

I wholeheartedly agree.

God, I hope not. Cheadle is a good actor, not a good rhodey. Have him replace IM down the line in avengers if they want, but there are way better characters out there that would make better movies. War Machine is Iron Man's sidekick, always has been, always will be. Imho.

You're not the only one. I also think a War Machine movie could have potential. I liked the premise of Greg Pak's series and there was some interesting elements even in Nick Spencer's misguided Iron Man 2.0. I haven't read a lot of his older adventures but from those two recent series I think there is enough to get some good ideas for a film and even some villains from.

However, I would like them to reboot it and maybe replace Cheadle. I like Cheadle as an actor generally but his Rhodes did nothing for me. And plus having him do a spin off would just bring back memories of Iron Man 2. That movie was a weak introduction for Cheadle as Rhodes.

They'd have to change it up. Rhodes is a very boring character. We know virtually nothing about him. Just that he's a military officer, and Tony's comedic foil. Not enough to make a movie about.

Now, if they had gone the bodyguard route, with him officially being Iron Man, they might have had something to work with.

Didn't you hear?! Despite the fact that the movie is an astounding 2 weeks away, they're re-filming the entire movie over to add him in!

I'd really enjoy this, especially if RDJ doesn't return, I'd rather see War Machine with a Tony Stark cameo than a new Tony. Or use WM as a transition from one Tony to another smoothly. Might be interesting.

I would like to see War Machine in a Hawkeye-sized role in the Avengers as well, that'd be cool

I am not sure if War Machine could carry an entire movie though. As someone else said, he would work really well in the Avengers.

Is there even enough material for a spin off? Going by the film, Rhodes isn't a very interesting character. He didn't make the suit, he simply stole it.

So really, you don't have a lot to work with.

he didn't steal it, he liberated it from an oppressive, power-mad tyrant!
At least that's how historians will see it a thousand years from now.

As a spin-off potential, I could see them making it a typical war movie, but with the added bonus of a mech suit.

Agreed. War Machine is cool and would fit into The Avengers, but come on, an entire movie based on this character?! I don't think so. This character should be viewed as more of a side kick to Iron Man, rather than his equal. Besides that, we already have the Iron Man franchise, why do we need an imitator?

Execuse me? Did you just say that he "should" be only a sidekick and not an equal? Do you know how racist that just made you sound?

He has already proven that he's more than Iron Man's equal. I'd argue he's even more qualified to wear a suit because A) he's sober most of the time and B) his time in the air force.
I don't think of War Machine as an immitator, I see him as an opportunity to explore more grounds that Tony's character doesn't cover.

I have no problem with a War Machine film; but at this phase it is a bit early, since there are other characters who need a solo film first (Fury, Black Widow, among others.) I would not mind him in an Avengers film as WM only if Iron Man is not in the film. Having two armored soldiers diminishes the variety of powers/equipment in the team, and might clutter up the narrative.

Yeah, even in the comics, I think he was only on Avengers West Coast or something. I agree that he wouldn't bring anything new to Avengers, but I would've loved to see cameos of at least James Rhodes in some of those solo movies.
