We need a new great superman game.

Superman's abilities for one demand far more engine power to convincingly pull off.

inFamous is a poor comparison as Coles power are for the most part radically different from that of Superman.

Not only is a talented developer needed but a more up to date system. Which is coming relatively soon I would think anyway.

A new generation is still not needed for Superman. Sucker Punch could do a great Superman game, as I'm sure Rocksteady could as well. Again, its not the tech holding the character back. Its how you implement his powers and still have gamers feel vulnerable.

Superman Returns had pretty good flying and that was a half developed game from half a decade ago. I have full faith that good flight could be accomplished now.

I don't think the hardware is the problem for making a great Superman game. It's a matter of getting a good team on it, and solving the puzzle of translating what the comics, the animated series, and even the movies have done and conveying that in an meaningful manner for gamers.

Plus, trying to figure out what everyone wants. I'm assuming nobody wants the Bruce Timm STAS version where he gets his ass handed to him for most of the time until the last minute where he'd unleash the beast.

Well I have a feeling we will find out sooner than later. I'd bet anything that there will be a tie in with Man of Steel

But if you do set piece games for someone like Superman, they don't feel natural. Play Spider-Man: Friend or Foe or Justice League Heroes to see what I mean. A game like Arkham Asylum would work best in my opinion, it's entirely structured, but also set in a sandbox environment.

How did you go from my Uncharted example to Friend or Foe and Justice League Heroes? Try Zone of the Enders and God of War. There have been enough games that let you play as an uber-powerful being. And no, they weren't all reduced to arcade style brawlers or hack & slay dungeon crawlers.

there's no reason why a studio like Rocksteady can't make a kick a** Superman game.

And btw, what's up with this crazy talk of needing next-gen hardware for a Superman game? I've seen tons of games that individually had parts that would have been perfect in a Superman game. Just put all the stuff together.

^^ yeah. you don't need a next-gen console for a Superman game.

If its so simple I wonder why WB Interactive has been unable to commission a developer to make this happen?

Just a question seeing as they've been around for 17 years without a successful Superman game...

I don't know. Why did it take them so long to deliver Arkham Asylum? A Superman game IMO is simple. All you need is the right Dev team, with the passion and the time. We had what, 2 really bad Superman games? The one based on TAS and the other one being a Movie tie-in, which we know almost always suck anyway. And suddenly this current gen isn't enough for a good Superman game?

Take Zone of the Enders 2, replace Jehuty with Superman, and voila, good Superman game right there.

I don't know. Why did it take them so long to deliver Arkham Asylum?

A capable enough engine that could meet the requirement of Batmans abilities and environment to its fullest extent maybe?

Which proves my point exactly.

It took Batman until the 7th generation of video game consoles for a developer to almost perfectly capture his essence with Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

Superman being a character with even more demanding abilities who's yet to have a successful video game this late into the 7th gen is unlikely to get something worthy of its hero and I'm almost confident this generation of consoles won't get it unfortunately.

I definitely think a developer is capable of taking on this task but it won't happen with this gen.

If you want to be able to do exactly everything that Superman is capable off, I'd guess you'd have to wait for yet another generation. I personally think it's simply ridiculous to expect to be able to do everything and get the world as a sandbox, simply because Superman is a character without limitations. You can have a great Superman game if you simply accept the fact that your game is going to have limitations. We don't need to be able to fly to freaking africa or into outer space, just because we think we should be able to. If it doesn't serve the plot, he doesn't need to be there.

Best move would be to just skip this generation and then attempting it once the next gen consoles get announced.

A truly great Superman game would need more than what both the PS3 and 360 have to offer but hopefully Sony/Microsofts next gen counterparts might be able to do the trick.
I disagree on so many levels. I dont see what about this gen thats incapable of doing a proper Superman game

I loved the flying in Superman Returns. it was about the only thing I liked in it......lol.

but if you take that, improve upon it, improve the rest of the combat mechanics, and give us a good story ( like the Arkham games ), you can make a great Superman game.

The Superman Returns formula would work with a better story and more varying gameplay opportunities and better mechanics. But the idea was there. A Superman game has to be open-world otherwise it will feel like Shattered Dimensions - a neutered Superhero. Arkham worked because he's just a human so is utterly dependent on his environment. But what is fun about being Superman in a closed room? Pretty much nothing. I remember feeling that way in that Shadow of the Apokolypse game for N64. We need a game that plays to Superman's strengths - his speed, his strength, his intelligence/investigative reporting, his good-nature. Make the story mean something to him, personally, or the story will have no weight. There is a good Superman game to be made, we just need to right people to know that it's a possibility.

Just Cause 2 engine probably could imo.
For the scale vs detail, it's pretty amazing.

Thats actually the best example I've seen posted yet actually.

Almost completely forgot about that game. A heavily tinkered version of that engine could actually work.

The environment, physics, and controls for the most part in that game were excellent.

I'm sure Rocksteady could work magic around something like that.

Theonly downside is that most likelyDini would write it and he usually wites Supes as useful as a neutered poodle til the last conceivable moment then he'll unleash the beast.

unless I can fly to Africa and fry a rhino with heat vision....I would consider any Superman game limited

I've actually never considered flight at such a large scale. Wow. I can just imagine soaring above the oceans and see entire continents in the distance. Goddammit. You've absolutely ruined any future Superman game for me now.

that's the best part about Superman....he can go anywhere, do anything

it would seem like a waste to limit him to Metropolis in any modern video game IMO

Not even Google Earth is in much detail as some people want a game like that is simply to big, to recreate every single detail upon the face of the planet is a ridiculous task to ask of anyone, and then to make it fully interactive as well as space travel, is just impossible.

Impossible my black ass.....get it done or don't bother

this is Superman dammit

Well, if the next game would use something like the Just cause 2 engine, you could have that. Not several continents, but one would be enough.
