Alot of the time, I find sites like IGN and Gametrailers, pretty reliable, but at other times, I can really disagree with them. An example is the God of War reviews, its no secret I don't think that game deserves those ratings. I also think Killzone got a little too underrated. It was glitchy, but it offered a more realisitic style of shotting than most other FPS' and I liked that.

The Darkness didn't recieve a brilliant reception, and Overlord wasn't rated all too high, but I think both games are great...

I know some ex/posters like THWIP* often disagreed with reviews for games like Lost Planet and Call of Juarez (or something like that). And then there's people who say stuff like Resistance sucks even though they get generally high reviews.

From what I've experienced, alot of people here listen to reviews when its what they want to hear, and when its not, they just blame it on the site. I know IGN apparently has a reputation for overrating games, but I don't see how a site made up of individual reviewers can get a reputation like that.

So the question is, do game reviews have any influence over whether you buy a game or not?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :down:D

And I'm sure this thread is little more than a kneejerk reaction to the sucky review Ratchet & Clank got from Gamespot. :o

I'll check reviews out and give a bit of credence depending on how detailed it is. Usually, I'll compare that sources prior reviews to see how they rated some games that I had feelings on one way or the other. If I want a game badly enough, I'll pick it up no matter what the reviews are, but there's no harm in getting some outside info beforehand.

I usually go to Gamerankings and check out the overall consensus. More accurate than just one website I'd say.

I knew I'd pay for saying that. :(

It did? Lemme check...

7.5!?! Christ. Well I enjoyed the other games so...

But I didn't even know about that score, and it wouldn't be the first review to let me down. Like I said, The Darkness and Overlord reviews weren't always so great, that dissapointed me.

I'm sure many people were let down by Heavenly Sword too... though I wasn't.

Just because I can't be arsed to edit my double post. Commend my lazyness damn you. :cmad:

As for the topic, I agree with Spider-Jay. I look at a concensus of all the reviews availiable. If theres a consistency in most of them, with the pros and cons and such, I will trust them. But if it varies a lot, if there are a lot of contrasts between the reviews, I'll have to go on my own judgment.

I don't know where you're getting the whole "The Darkness" reviews being not so great schtick, considering the game has an average of above 80% on Gamerankings.com. That's darn good score.

And Heavenly Sword was a classic case of premature ejaculation - it climaxed WAY too soon.

It depends. If its a game that i feel is going to be good, either thro a demo or previews then ill prolly pick it up regardless of reviews. If its a game that i might not be totally familiar with then ill listen to the reviews on it. For the most part i usually agree with what places like Ign and Gamespot have to say.

I really wish Civil Liberties weren't protected here because I would be owning R&C: LOL right now.

Reviews do tend to indluence people, but every game should have a demo once it goes gold, so people actually get some hands-on to see for themselves. But some developers know that their game will suck, so they don't put out a demo. And some developers don't want to invest any time in trying to get a slice of their game out to people when they it's not really needed anyways. You should always make your opinion, cuz listening to other people shouldn't be all you have to go on, if you can help it. Hell, Mario Party games tend to get horrible reviews, but they still get bought like crazy. And PoP had awesome ratings, but it didn't sell too well.

I saw a fair amount of poorer reviews for The Darkness, mostly in gaming magazines though.

I heard they were reintroducing them in the US, sounds like you're catching up with us!

Whoever said I was in the U.S, or even a bloody American for that matter? :ninja:

I've never heard of a *gaming* magazine, that's preposterous!

It's just another name for a scam to get ******ed gamers to pay for something they'd get on teh internets for free. :o
