Website reviews - Do you trust them?

I go to Gamerankings to see what the majority is saying. I usually go to IGN first as I tend to agree with what they say

IGN is generally way too lenient in their reviews.

I don't trust any reviews. There are a lot of things that factor into a game's score before the quality of the game comes in. Sometimes they get bribed with swag (or, probably, cash), they have to worry about pissing off the big advertisers, they have to worry about potentially pissing off an important developer and missing out on the business-bringing exclusives in the future, they tend to judge games with convoluted criteria and in total isolation. So instead of judging a game next to all others and just determining if it's fun or not, they'll judge a game based on what's being offered on that particular platform, sometimes just in that particular genre, and give a relatively high score to a game that they admit isn't very fun or worth the money just because of outstanding graphics or an attempt at innovation, even if it failed completely. Game reviews, regardless of whether they're online or in a magazine or on a television show, are almost totally worthless as a way to gauge a game's quality.

It's just another name for a scam to get ******ed gamers to pay for something they'd get on teh internets for free. :o
I have a subscription to GI...:csad:
But if teh internet ever crashes you'll be screwed, biatch!!! Ha! But seriously, its just another source of information, like newspapers. Sure people can check online, or they could spend a quarter and flip pages. I use mags and the internet, so I get the best of both worlds.

Same, I have subscriptions to a few magazine, because I find they're a nice easy way to access good screen shots, top priority reviews, and interesting article all in one space.

I use gaming sites only to look at scores mostly, not actually read the reviews half the time. And obviously for trailers etc.

Gametrailers however is great with its review system.

I strongly agree. IGN loves to give 9's to anything with a bit of hype.
well strictly going by numbers isnt all too helpful, but actually reading whats said about the game is. I think IGN tends to have thorough reivews which actually let me know what Im getting into before trying the game. Of course this isnt always the case, but for the most part it is. The IGN reviews can be a bit longer than the usual, but thats a good thing

i usually use ign,x-play, or egm they usually are spot on when review a game that is super bad..........sometimes they are a little inflated or overhyped at times, but hey take it with a grain of salt! and i think if you really like a game even if it gets bad reviews you should buy it and if you had a good time with it........then good for you if it sucked something awful then you cant say you havent benn warned!!!

Perfect example of what I was talking about. If a game like Jericho gets these kind of reviews: http://www.gamestats.com/objects/843/843257//articles.html

Then I have to pretty much play the game myself to judge it. It got as low as a 3.0 and as high as a 9.0. I mean, IGN's UK team gave it a 8 but IGN gave it a 5.6. If its inconsistent like that, I have to play the game myself. If its a game that really interests me, and it gets 9 and 8s across the board, I'll probably end up buying it without hesitation. But if it gets those kind of reviews, I rent it first.
