Welcome to Earth One!

IMO Kal-El should be Krypton's Lone Survivor and it should be just Batman and Alfred no Bat-Family in this universe.

You know what? I really like the idea of Ultmate/Earth One/modern takes on classic heroes. I really do. Not because I especially like modern, fresh takes. They can be set in the years they were first published, for all I care. No, the reason I really really love the idea of them is a narrative issue. While I love the complex tapestry of different stories and reboots and interpretations of the great comic book characters by so many creators over the years, at the same time I am a little bothered that there isn't a single, cohesive narrative with these characters actually grow like real people. Which is why I like the idea of new takes on the characters starting from the beginning. While the Ultimate line didn't really accomplish this, and it's still in question wether Earth One will, I think that "ultimate" universes have the potential to be to super heroes what T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" is to Arthurian Lore. Which is a good thing, I think. It doesn't make it the real story of the characters, just the most cohesive.

Well JMS' said that the first villain will have something to do with Krypton's destruction. So thats either Brainiac or General Zod if you ask me.

Dick Grayson is already confirmed. Bat-family is TOO important to be ignored.

I hope it's Zod. I'm rather sick of Brainiac being from Krypton.

I hope it's Zod too personally. :p

I've only read a few books s from Marvel's Ultimate line & while I'm not crazy about it, I think DC's earth one will be alot more innovative. Whatever happened to the Elseworlds imprint? All those were great! Anyone remember Marvel 2099?

I hope the villain from Krypton is the Eradicator.

My hope is that if we do have to have a villain from Krypton I hope it's Brainiac similar to how he was portrayed on Superman: The Animated Series. That way Kal-El can still be the last surviving member of the Kryptonian race.

But Kryptonian Brainiac is kinda lame. Like, I loved Superman: The Animated Series, but I thing Brainiac is a lot more interesting when he's a seperate alien threat.

This was listed for DC's 2010 FALL releases:
SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE HC
Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
Artist: Shane Davis
Original graphic novel
$19.99 US, 128 pg

I hope this means Batman can come in the summer. :p I think there was another site 2 months ago or so that confirmed it's being released in September, which falls to the "Fall" schedule.

I dont see why it'd have to be that much later... I would think if Superman comes out Fall of this year, Batman would come out somewhere in the january-march range.

No i meant that Batman comes in summer *this* year.

Oh, then also no, sadly. They've released all their solicitations to the end of the year and Batman: Earth One isnt on it. Superman is supposed to come first, I believe. :csad:

I want it too...

But But But.... The list says "fall" so theres still chance for summer.... I.... Well my hope died. :p

The best we can hope for is very, very early 2011. :csad:

May I ask where can I see this list of Fall releases? Thank you in advance.

Interview with JMS!

So I like to look at why a great deal. When DC and Dan DiDio approached me about writing a Superman GN that would in essence reboot the character, why was the first question I went to. We all know that Clark Kent is Superman. But why is he Superman? What prompted him to put on that uniform? Why did he decide to become Superman? What was, for lack of a better term, his Garden of Gethsemane moment? Like Saul on the road to Damascus, what caused the scales to fall from his eyes and reveal his destiny, bringing a new name and a new mission?

The GN, therefore, begins with Clark's arrival in Metropolis at age 21, with his whole future ahead of him. He's had to hide his skills all the earlier years of his life, when he was learning how to control them, but now he can and he can be anything he ever wanted. For the first time, he can step out into the light and use those skills in measured ways to earn a living and create a lifestyle that can reward his family for taking care of him all these years. He could become the best-paid, most successful athlete in human history. He could become a leading research scientist. He could have it all. Or he could put on that uniform, show the world all that he is...but in so doing, end up dedicating himself to a life of service rather than money. At some point in time, he had to make that decision. So we show the process leading up to, and following that decision.

Along the way, we go to his backstory, how he was found (some small changes here, but nothing outrageous), how he grew up and discovered who he was, and we again ask the why question. We know that Krypton was destroyed, but why was it destroyed? Was it an accident? Do planets just up and blow up one day? Or is there something more that we don't know about? Was it a natural event...or a hit job on a planetary scale?

Sounds like a great psychological story packed with action!

I'm pumped for this, since I loved some bits of Ultimate Marvel.

I love this idea. The biggest hurdle keeping me from getting into more DC comics is just the continuity which is why Im a big fan of All Star Superman. I love seeing fresh takes on the characters also with the fact that these are gonna be OGN's definitely has me excited.

From Comic Con:
The subject of the “Earth One” graphic novels (“Superman” by J. Michael Straczynski and “Batman” by Geoff Johns) also surfaced. Johns shared a few facts about this mysterious project with the audience: he and artist Gary Frank are aiming to release two of these books a year; the Riddler is the main villain of his Batman book; and Barbara Gordon will be appearing in his book.

Nice Riddler Centric stories either ROCK (Hush) or they Suck (countless horrible riddler stories), It will be nice to see Edward as a villian again.

I think he's turning back into a regular villain in the regular books, too
