Shocking news from Superman Homepage:

Welling Backs Out of "Smallville" Season 9
A press release sent out by The CW today reveals that, at the last second, Tom Welling has backed out of his contract negotiations and neglected to be part of the confirmed 9th season of Smallville. Though his participation was previously considered all but certain, it seems that a legal loophole, coupled with Tom's desire to take two episodes off in the final season being denied, led to a quarrel that ultimately broke down the process.
The Superman Homepage contacted executive producer Darren Swimmer, who had this to say: "Things are still mostly in the air, but we're considering bringing back Kara as a stop-gap measure. We're confirmed for eight episodes without Tom, but to be honest, we're not sure what we'll do without him. It's a complete blow. And we were going to put him in the suit, too."
Swimmer also hinted strongly that the Justice League may play a part in the show without Clark, only this time, led by... you guessed it. Lana Lang. When we last saw her, she had Clark's powers, and thereby would serve as a fitting proxy.
"We're in negotiations," Darren continued, "It's a matter of time. With the dismal showing of the Chun-Li movie, her people are now making overtures. We'll see."
