It's literally been a couple of days for one and the other is damn near a cultural punchline after almost two decades.

1) Black Panther is a cultural phenomenon. It doesnxt take a historian with months of analysis to notice.

2) The Matrix may be a joke to YOU now but it was a cultural obsession in 1999.

With Panther I get how meaningful it might be to someone on a personal level but... Again it's been a few days. It actually is going to take months if not more time to understand what if any actual lasting cultural impact it's going to have. I know that's not what anyone wants to hear right now, again, understandably so, but that's closer to reality as history tells us looking back on any number of things. You listed the election of Obama. That's an event with real impact. Less than a week into the release of BP and giving it such an out sized weight... I'm sorry I can't be the only one to look at that and think of the old "The Dark Knight Was My Generation's Woodstock" mentality.

I would like to know though, on the Matrix, what lasting effects in the culture do you attribute to the film? And please, leave out it's effect on films and film production as those are obvious but also are part of a continuity of films that broke new ground in terms of productions and VFX. The effect of the Matrix in that sense cannot be denied.

On the WIDER culture of humankind though... What part of your or anyone else's life was so radically changed by this movie? What did it change in culture in general? I honestly would like to know as again, as much as I unabashedly love that film (any of it's silliness not withstanding I really do enjoy the film and always will) the period where it was held in high esteem passed very quickly.

No you don't understand

And quite frankly your TDK analogy is offensive.

TDK fans weren't told their bloodline was inferior and that they were subhuman animals/monkeys/savages/cannibals/beasts because they came from a certain continent for last few hundred years.

TDK fans weren't told they were from sh-thole countries by a president who pushes a white nationalist agenda while they deal with rising forms of bigotry and hate crimes recently.

TDK fans weren't misrepresented by the media with criminal elements and poverty even though the vast majority live well above those conditions and are productive members of society.

TDK fans don't implicitly understand the legacy of white supremacy that caused hundreds of years of atrocity, humiliation, terrorism and physical/mental subjugation.

I could go on but it's clear you don't understand.

This movie has the counter programming blacks have been waiting for since the first slave ship arrived.

We NEED a fictional leader like T'Challa because our leaders were massacred (MLK, RFK, Malcolm X, Black Panther leaders, JFK) often with the help of the FBI or CIA.

You could've easily trivialized the ugly events I listed: the terrorism, the riot or the stupid murder trail. You choose to marginalize something that is deeply cathartic for blacks in a way that few events I listed could ever be. As if these millions of blacks dragging their entire family and buses of school children are just being silly or stupid.

I really expected better from someone who prides themselves on wisdom and has a thread dedicated to timeless wisdom and aphorisms.

Just stay in your lane on this one, buddy.

Sit this one out.

As a fan of Black Panther and a black man, I agree with Krypton. It's been a few days. Just let it be great and an important movie for diversity. We don't need to rush into calling it a cultural phenomenon. Especially when you compare it to The Matrix which has been influential, copied, parodied, etc. since it's creation. And actually you were being really rude about it for no reason at all. Even if you disagree with Krypton, there's no reason to be rude about it, especially when he wasn't rude in the first place

-Columbine
-Harry Potter
-9/11
-OJ Trial

Most of them have already been named

Rude?

I stated facts.

Maybe you shouldn't take people trivializing black enthusiasm for BP so lightly.

That trivialization has been weaponized by the alt right on social media.

Both of you need to research the global impact of the movie and study the opposition. The information is already out there.

Not every cultural phenomenon needs months of hindsight to identify the emotion and awareness involved.

If you really don't see what you posted as rude than that's a problem

There's a respectful way to disagree with someone and then there's what you did which was trivialize and disrespect them. Chill

I agree with what's already been stated by KRYPTON & Blackman, Black Panther has literally been out for less than a week for most places. For something to have or be a significant cultural event it needs to not only change something significant/wrong, but it also has to leave a lasting impression 10-20+ years down the line.

Listing Black Panther with some of the other things you've listed such as 9/11 or Barrack Obama being elected ie things of real impact is laughable.. the same with The Matrix.

So explain how comparing entire black families and millions of blacks across the planet to delusional TDK fanboys is respectful.

Because they feel BP transcends any movie from the 21st century.

You're missing the point. Disagreeing is perfectly fine. However, you don't have the be disrespectful or rude in order to disagree.

C'mon really? Chill out.

John Lennon died
Reagon shot

Some cultural phenomenons are not significant in the same way.

The OJ trail was a cultural phenomenon.

Was it not?

Messiah, your entire tone in this conversation is way too harsh and confrontational. If you cannot be more respectful to the other people, then stop responding. I can clearly see BP's success is important to you and you're taking this personally. That is exactly why you should maybe go chill out for a few until you can think more rationally.

Am I using all capitals?

Stop telling me to chill.

I've been simply defending my position for a while now.

Thank you.

How have I been confrontational the entire time?

Because you're talking down to them as if they're stupid. It's condescending.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying. But, you need to stop treating people like they're idiots.

I admit I went on a rant initially but after that its someone telling me to calm down over and over for no reason at all.

It's an old trick to make someone seem more uncivil than they really are.

I told you to chill because you were being rude. Ive said it and Spider-Fan said it. It's nto personal but as Spider-Fan said, you were being condescending from the first post I quoted.
So yes there was a reason why I said "chill." ANd obviously Im not a mod, so you can ignore all you want. But you derailed your own thread by being rude. And even a mod agrees that you were being condescending.

I read over the whole conversation. As a moderator, it is my job to be fair and objective. Objectively, you're treating them rudely and like they're stupid, which has escalated the discussion. This is not me pulling some old trick on you. If I disagreed with the consensus that you were being rude, I would have defended you.

So I again ask you try to be more respectful. Also once again if you cannot do that right now, my advice is to come back to this discussion later with a cool head.

Can you point out the last post I was especially rude or condescending or angry?

No need to chime in at this point.

You got the mod intervention.

We can agree to disagree
