What do you guys think of Tyler Perry and his work?

I've actually never seen any of his work. No shows, no movies. It never sparked my interest, and the commercials for his stuff used to annoy the **** out of me.

Sorry, I know that didn't help your thread out. :csad:

I think I remember seeing a thread about Tyler Perry around here.. *shrug*

I loved his play Madea Goes to Jail, that was hilarious. I saw that one in San Francisco (or Oakland I think) It was great. His movies are hmm so-so I guess. I've only seen Diary of a Mad Black Woman so far. That was pretty good for me. A 8/10.

Tyler Perry was original at first...now he is just annoying and I hate his movies now:o

"Hey, I'm a guy...look, I'm in a dress! ARENT I ZANY!?!?!? Believe in Jesus."

There, you've just seen everything he's ever done.

:hehe: at The Jokers comment
I dislike his work...I guess I never gave it a chance after all his stuff was named
Tyler Perry presents...

I respect his success, the fact that he has opened the first black owned movie studio but his movies look like crap. I turned from Dairy of a Mad Black Woman after about 10 minutes because it was so terrible. Also I hate the ads for House of Payne because it doesn't look funny in the slightest.

I've tried watching his stuff, but it is all the same. It's like what would've happened if Eddie Murphy had never been edgy and formed a movie studio.

All his work just seems to go for the safe, not trying to advance the comedy game in anyway school of comedy. As such, would never watch him. Seems like an even lamer version of late '90s/current Eddie Murphy.

All I need to know about him is that he never screens his movies for critics.

His plays are actually quite funny. His TV shows and movies are awful. Just awful. It goes beyond safe, he's only trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator at this point. I'm reaching the point where everytime I see his name I want to scream.

I agree, for some odd reason my cousin had a tape that showed his theater play of Diary of a Mad Black woman...and it was actually pretty entertaining and funny. I saw the movie and it was TERRIBLE. Some things just work best in certain mediums, in this case I think he should have kept them as plays. Maybe this is why most Shakespeare film adaptations are terrible.

Anyhow, I have never desired to see anything of his after see the 'Mad black woman' movie...and most of his stuff (judging by TV spots look terrible) ugh :o

The Ace of Knaves said:
Who the hell is he? Never heard of him.
He is basically an actor/screenwriter/movie director who writes about African-American families going through a slueth of everyday problems.

As I said...his play was fun, the movies are pretty bad (and when I say bad...I rate it 0.5/10 :o )

Thinking about Tyler Perry... seeing his commercials of his so called "sitcoms" and so called "films" that reek the foundations of the soundwaves of television itself. The sight of it hurts insides. One of the reasons I don't own television. Ever since the conclusion of Seinfeld, threw television out window. And what is stranger, the sick vermon dresses up as a woman.... oddly perverse.... but also disturbing. Transexual perhaps? Or just an attention ****e? Could be both. Obnoxious either way. Must investigate further... Though I'm afraid to.

LOL, the Rohrshach response was great.

I have never been interested in anything that Perry has done. Dressing up as a woman was funny in the 1970's or whenever Dustin Hoffman did it. Now, it's just f**king stupid.

I watched Diary Of A Mad Black Woman expecting it to be about Madea. It wasn't she was barely a supporting role in it. It was about the wife of a rich scumbag who threw her out and the way she learns to live and love again by being a strong black Christan.

A lot more...potent than what I was expecting. Good message. Just not funny.

I've seen the first 2 or 3 episodes of House Of Payne. Sorta funny but terribly written. If it's gotten better, Ive yet to give it another chance.

from everything I've heard and seen, his Plays are a LOT better than his Movies/Shows.

I've seen one or two of his Plays, and they are generally very entertaining and quite hilarious.

his films...meh. they're basically stripped down, unfunny versions of his Plays.

he should really just stick to Stage Productions.

I've never watched House of Payne, just never seemed like something I'd want to watch. my initial thoughts when I saw previews for it were something along the lines of "what is this stupid ****, and why are they glorifying idiocy?" every time I saw whoever was supposed to be the "Father" of the House saying something dumb in the commercial.

then again, most Black Sitcoms have been terrible and generic ever since Martin went off the air from what I remember. Steve Harvey and Bernie Mac's shows were pretty good, but the rest...meh.

oh how I miss Martin, Family Matters, A Different World, the Cosby Show, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Steve Harvey, and Bernie Mac(RIP).

today's BET-infected trash is pretty much unbearable.

Agreed about his plays.

After watching Madea's family reunion, I came upon a striking revelation; Tyler Perry is actually a woman who dresses like a man who dresses like a woman to make movies that sound like they were written by a big, blubbering vagina.
