What Is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Cooking With DC Thread (Black Adam)

When it comes to Billy Batson they need a kid who is cute but not annoying on screen. As for Shazam, well the guy should have muscles but also exude charm in a natural way and have a sense of fun about him. Those two roles will be crucial for the films overall success (as well as script.)

Yes indeed, we need good actors, who fit the roles, a good script, and may i add a good director.

If Yates wasn't doing that Harry Potter spin-off, we and WB wouldn't even have given it a second thought.

I know I may get some grief for this but here goes. If they are going for more of a lighthearted family movie along the lines of GOTG, I think Jason Segel might be an out-of-the-box choice (he has a good height at 6' 4"). He would have to put on some serious muscle (he did put in a lot of work to get in good shape for Sex Tape), but if they are going for a bit of a comedic tone he can pull of the boy scout persona of Captain Marvel.

This has been rumored for years. It's good to finally see it take shape. Keep the news coming. I needs my Shazam fix on the big screen. :D

...and ****ing go back to calling him Captain Marvel! :argh:

Man, I wish we could go back to calling him Captain Marvel, but if it's a choice between that and the movie, I'll take the movie.

Black Adam
Black Adam is a fictional comic book supervillain, appearing in publications and other properties of DC Comics; he is a primary adversary of the superhero Shazam(originally called Captain Marvel, before legal action by Marvel Comics resulted in DC Comics losing the copyright to that character name).Black Adam was created by Otto Binder & C. C. Beck in 1945, initially as a villain for (originally), Fawcett Comics "Marvel Family"; however, Black Adam was revived as a recurring character after DC Comics began publishing Captain Marvel stories under the title "Shazam!" in the 1970s. As originally depicted, Black Adam was a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his Marvel Family associates. Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Black Adam has been re-defined by DC Comics writers Jerry Ordway, Geoff Johns, and David S. Goyer as a corrupted antihero attempting to "clear his name". Featured roles in such comic book series as Justice Society of America (JSA), Villains United, Infinite Crisis, and The New 52 have elevated the character to an unprecedented level of prominence in the overall "universe" of DC Comics characters. In 2009, Black Adam was ranked as IGN's 16th Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time. The character will be played by Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming film Shazam!
* New Line Cinema had been developing a Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam! live-action feature film, with Peter Segal (The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates) as director and Michael Uslan as producer. Actor and former wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has agreed to appear in the film as Black Adam. However, Johnson will portray Black Adam in a Shazam! film set in the shared universe started in Man of Steel. The film will be written by Jack the Giant Slayer writer Darren Lemke.

That's another great idea!!

Somewhat surprised that Johnson is playing Adam rather than Captain Marvel himself, as the latter would be expected to be the larger role. Unless Adam is intended to be a Justice League-sized threat?

In any case, this is good news. Adam is a great character. I really enjoyed his arc with Isis (the goddess, not the terrorist group) in DC's "52" run.

Could this tie in with the filming in Morocco, or is that coincidental?

Lol Rick Malambri!!! Remember when everyone suggested him for Superman pre Cavill? And Harmon Walsh!!

LOL, Harmon Walsh. I remember this one guy who was constantly mentioning Walsh would ridicule anyone who even MENTIONED Cavill, because "his time has passed" and "he no longer has a shot."

And well, as well all know, Cavill is Superman and Walsh is... the guy who recently appeared in something called "Mangiacake."

It's a pity John Barrowman is not ten years younger: he would have been a perfect Captain Marvel.

So will Shazam have the power to listen to music and instantly identify it in his film?

He starred in a lead role in only 3 movies. None of them bombed. I don't think After earth made a profit IIRC but it didn't bomb. Actually it did pretty well considering how horrible it was, how much people hated and its critic ratings. Johnny Depp lost his star power not Will.

If a movie didnt make a profit, people hated it and critics despised it that is the very definition of a bomb. After Earth made money (all of it overseas) but it bombed horribly in the states. Will Smith doesnt have the draw he once did.

As for Kutcher and Segal...you guys realize Shazam is a hero right? I love those guys but they make zero sense outside of the fact that they are funny. Shazam has to be a believable hero with a lighthearted tone not some funny actor in a costume pretending to be strong.

Has anyone seen this yet? It looks like the movies AREN'T connected?

http://collider.com/shazam-movie-tone-writer/

“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

I think whoever plays Shazam has to act like a kid in a hugely muscular adults body. Sort of like Tom Hanks in big (not the look but in the acting).

Could some comedic actor pull that off? Maybe, but personally I would feel better with some dramatic actor who could bulk up and really act the part.

Thats all based on a quote from one Hollywood exec.
The jury is still out on whether or not Shazam is connected to the DCCU.

Jason Segel has already mentioned that he would like to do other types of movies. You can read about it here. His next role will be a drama, The End of the Tour. How good he will be in those types of roles is to be determined.

I agree there may be a stigma about him because he is only known for comedic roles. People may take the movie less seriously.

I guess I'm the only one who does not feel that he can really act.I have not seen Hercules yet, but the commercial does not look appealing. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm taking a chance bashing the Rock on this forum. Lol I just think that the character Black Adam is going to need some serious acting talent behind it. I hope The Rock can do it some justice. No pun intended.

His acting is fine for the parts he tends to play. It isn't as if he is going to disappear into a character, but he can deliver dialogue convincingly, and he brings a presence to the roles he plays. I think he is a better actor than Schwarzenegger or Stallone, but provides similar charisma. I think he will do very well as Black Adam. I would have preferred him as Captain Marvel, because he handles comedy quite well, but this is well within his abilities.

Are you guys kidding me? Some of the stuff I'm reading here is laughable. Aston Kutcher as Shazam?? WTF? Will Smith? NOOOOO. I like both of the guys but I say a hell no to both of them. If in some weird universe where it's a choice between the two of them I'd go with Smith. Smith's terrible After Earth may have bombed but the man is still a box office power house. I like the Rock as Black Adam though.

the only "big" comedic actor i can think of is Rob Riggle, but i suggested that weeks ago and no one liked it. :funny: he kind of reminds me of a dark haired mr.incredible.

what about, Bobby Cannavale?

I don't know anything about him, but he looks like an idiot.

He played Gyp Rosetti in Boardwalk Empire, dude has been on a role lately in Hollywood. He's probably my favorite rising star right now.
