What is the greatest sequel of all time?

A VERY tough choice, but seeing as Aliens is my favourite movie ever, and honestly to me the best sequel ever, had to vote for that:

6)X-Men 2 (why wasnt this on the poll please?)

I think in a few years Star Trek Into Darkness may be up there for me as well.

Mind you, SM2 and TDK were pretty gosh darned good as well. So many good films in that list.

When debating the topic of greatest sequel, I think a question that can't be ignored is what is a sequel supposed to do? Raise the stakes (The Dark Knight), go further with the characters (The Empire Strikes Back), build off the greatness of the predecessor (The Godfather Part II), do something else, or all of these things?

X-Men 2 and Hellboy 2 should definately be on this poll. I'd make a case for Blade II being on there as well.

I love TDK, but it having more votes than Aliens actually causes me pain.

Magnum Force was a good sequel to Dirty Harry. The others were less so.

And I thought the Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum were good and consistent throughout the series.

^Thats true actually, Supremecay was a great sequel from a very consistant series. I switch so much between which film is my favourite in the 1st 3 Bourne movies.

X-Men 2 is my favorite so for me its the greatest!

T2 really is an incredible sequel in that it starts almost the exact same way as the original movie and then 20 minutes in (roughly) the movie takes a tangent and goes in a completely different direction and then ends pretty the same as the original. That tangent is what makes the movie as you become completely invested in the characters so when the action of the climax kicks in it has more weight as you actually care about the characters. A truly brilliant sequel that takes an excellent movie (Terminator) and builds on it, it has calls backs but it doesn't feel like a shameless retread.
