It's alright. Kinda like two movies that feel a bit too unconnected until they meet up at the end(the kid drama and the monster story). Felt a bit disjointed but they got some really good performances out of these kids.
There's maybe about 3 or 4 samurais that had good character development but overall it felt like you never got to know the others until they got killed off and you were left thinking "who was that guy again?" that's how I felt about it watching the battle. Seven Samurai did a fantastic job on that part. I knew who was who and what personality they had going on and you felt the emotion going though when each was killed off. In 13 Assassins it was, to me,
the uncle, the clam and collective badass, and the Kikuchiyo knockoff.
Fair enough. It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I think it would be unfair to say that character focus is totally lacking.
Donnie Darko - 9-9.5/10
I think this has more to do with Catcher in the Rye than alternate universe and time travel. Apparently, the director's cut adds to the sci-fi elements and explains a lot of the issues left unresolved in the original release so I'll steer clear of that.
There seems to be bits of exosition missing which can be jarring, but they are well made mysteries with atmosphere, strong characters and a great lead performance from Tom Selleck. 7/10

I like Tom Selleck, but I always avoided those because they seemed(or were)DTV movies. Wasn't sure if they were all that great. You seemed to like them and I trust your judgement/taste, I'll probably give them a whirl since I think they're both streaming on Netflix.
It's passable alright with the humor and having a few good actors in the cast but the action sequences feels so lifeless and I don't mind a stylish movie, but for this I just couldn't get into it.
