It starts off well and the pure 80'sness is always welcome, the plot is a bit of a mess but Carl Weathers is really let down by weak action sequences and crappy one liners that don't give his badass hero a real chance to shine.

The Predator

Ehhhh. I was not expecting this to remind me of AVP:R. Some of the action scenes were so darkly lit and poorly edited, that I had a hard time making out what was happening. Especially with a certain character's quick death in the third act. And oh boy, was that third act a trainwreck.

Nice to see someone else who likes the first AvP movie!

Jigsaw (2017)

Disappointing. I unironically quite enjoy the Saw films, even the later ones. It's the only long running horror franchise I can think of that actually has a single ongoing story thread from the first film to the last, as utterly ridiculous and convuluted as that story thread became. This film is completely unnecessary, it doesn't try anything new at all, just throws out a dumb retcon that's incredibly similar to the one they already pulled back in Saw 4 with Hoffman. So we're supposed to believe that Jigsaw had yet another protege/accomplice that is never seen or mentioned at all in the first seven films? Also, no mention whatsoever of Hoffman, Amanda or Lawrence Gordon? Lame.

Mandy (2018)

This was a great ride. A simple plot, but the atmosphere in this flick makes up for it. Cage was awesome, and I need to see Andrea Riseborough being more reckognized in prominent roles from now on.

The Man With the Movie Camera (1929)

A Russian movie that captures the modern contemporary life, without having a real story or actors. Surprisingly little Soviet/communist propaganda, just some subtle parts I guess was needed for the filmmaker to get passed, lol. Of course it shows off a hypermodern and healthy Russia in an urban environment, but this could've been New York, Paris or Stockholm as well (and not showing whatever actual internal social issues back then).

This version was released in 1996, so I assume the cool modern soundtrack we hear is from around that year as well. The cutting is excellent and the flick is over all truly fascinating IMHO, and if you've seen Koyanisquatsi from 1982 you'd surely make a guess that this was the inspiration to that one.

Sphere (1998) starring Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson.

It's an absurd action movie that features an ex NFL player called The Boz who is seemingly allergic to shirts and looks like the lovechild of Brock Lesnar and Lex Luger, but he surprisingly has more charisma and is a more solid actor than several actors that were staples of the genre in the 80's. It's a so bad it's good type of deal. :D:

The Predator (2018)

As someone who enjoyed all the stand alone Predator movies to various degrees, I thought this new one was really fun. It's got a new take on the machismo group of soldiers taking on a Predator which I appreciated. Shane Black knows how to capture comradery on screen really well. The cast looked like they were having the best time on set especially Sterling K Brown and Keegan Michael Key. And after seeing this movie, I can see Boyd Holbrook and Trevante Rhodes getting more lead roles. I thought Olivia Munn did surprisingly well as a scientist. She was probably the most competent character in the movie. They I know people are allergic to comedy these days, but I loved it. There was a lot of gags throughout this that had me laughing. Even the Predator had a few jokes which I didn't see coming. I didn't have any problems with the supersized Predator other than some shoddy CG towards the end. I thought the story was pretty good for the most part... it's obviously not as good as the first two movies, but they do some interesting things with the lore. The last act was interesting but I would have loved to see what they originally had planned. Just from the photos and what little was said about it sounds much more interesting. Overall, I thought it was really fun and enjoyable. The hate for this movie is kinda being overblown, it's so far away from actual crap like AVP2.

A Simple Favor

Paul Feig manages bounce back after Ghostbusters and create something really unexpected. From the trailer, it was kinda hard to gauge what kind of movie this really is and to my surprise, it's actually a well made mystery drama with lots of comedy sprinkled throughout. Anna Kendrick and especially Blake Lively probably deliver some of their best performances on screen to date. What makes this kind of movie stand out from the rest is they turn left when you expect them to turn right. It keeps you guessing until the very last moment. The movie also has some great direction and cinematography which adds a lot. Overall, if you ever want to see a well done modern day noir with some comedy, check this out.
