Comic-Con 2006: The Incredible Hulk Panel
New director Louis Leterrier lays the smash down on the green one's sequel.
by Chris Carle
July 23, 2006 - Hulk 2 (actually titled The Incredible Hulk) is not going straight to DVD. David Duchovny will not star now that Eric Bana has left the project. Neither will Brendan Fraser. The franchise will, however, have a new director. Mere days ago Louis Leterrier, most recently responsible for The Transporter 2 was tapped to direct the big green one's latest screen adventure.

Speaking about the wooing process, the French director said, "We've been turning around each other like dogs in love." Ultimately, he was selected, and President of Production Kevin Feige said, "What he has planned in terms of the fun aspects of the Hulk, Hulk as hero, you guys will really be excited."

Members of the panel seemed dedicated to distancing themselves from Hulk. Louis Leterrier said, "The idea… is to make the Hulk action adventure movie everyone wanted to see."

In addition to being an action/adventure movie, Leterrier stated, "It's Marvel's horror movie… It's Frankenstein, it's Jekyll and Hyde and a little Edward Scissorhands." The script is going to hearken back to the television show, focusing on Banner's journey and his difficulty dealing with the monster. "The good thing abour number twos is that you don't waste your time on the origin," said Leterrier.

Every superhero movie needs a villain, and since this installment is focusing on Hulk's more heroic qualities, it's only right that he gets a gnarly enemy. That ultra-bad-ass is going to be Abomination. "I think we needed an anti-Hulk this time," said Leterrier. "Abomination is mega-bad Hulk."

Warming the hearts of many Con-goers, Leterrier delivered one last piece of good news about the sequel: "No poodles. Promise." Keep your eyes on IGN FilmForce for more information on this and other Marvel movies.

Eric was never actually in the project to start with.

Had Universal kept the rights he would at least have been under contract for it. He could have still refused, or Universal could have gone for someone else, but afaik he did sign-up for two Hulk films with them (subject to whatever terms & conditions his agent brokered for the first). Last time I read anything from Bana himself about it was along the lines that he'd be 'interested if offered' but he hadn't heard anything so that was that.

With Universal bailing out though any contracts with them don't mean a thing now, and I don't think they are gonna offer Bana the role again, expecially if Marvel do want (or need) to distance this film a little from the first.

Personally, I won't mind him not being in this one. Though he did a good enough job with the material he was given he just didn't seem right as Bruce Banner to me (a bit too buff for starters).

but why not ask Bana back, the guy is quickly becoming a great actor and has alot of people taking notice of him, hell, Spielberg hired him cause of The Hulk. If i was Marvel, i'd sell my god damn house to get this guy, he wasnt the problem with the first film (anyone who says this guy cant act can kiss my ass  ). Have a solid script and he'll come. All this talk of "maybe" asking Bana is stupid IMO, he's easily the best or marvel's leading men, Marvel need to get their head out of their asses and get this guy...now!!

I thought he did an extremely bad job in Hulk, but he's done extremely well in other movies. Not to totaly diss Bana, it might have been that I didn't like the way the movie portrayed Banner, so a new director could fix that.

Ok Look What I was not official that hes not returning he could be coming back remember he said hes looking to talk about that one real soon? so anyway lets hope he'll return so this will be a way better sequal I think that he will return and he'll be better than ever so lets hope that eric and jennifer return so this will be better if marvel recasts its gonna flop i know it

you got it right there. It was what Ang wanted, Ang didnt what Banner to be emotional, if a person isnt emotional we can relate to him. Bana did what Ang wanted, give him a script were he's totally scared out of his mind what might happen next and i bet you people who hated him in the first will happy.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Exactly what Sava said. Bana would simply have to convey what Leterrier wants to see as Banner. It's that simple. And I do hope that Bana, Connolly and Elliott come back.

Agreed. I'd hate to see him not come back.
