Whats YOUR favorite scary movie?

Not a big fan of the horror genre. But I say Poltergeist.

I'm not really too big on scary films, but I love John Carpenter's The Thing.

I love how it plays on the whole aspect of paranoia and asks the question of "who can you really trust?". The specific lighting and camera angles utilized in this film, filmed in an isolated area, no less, really help create this sense of dread, tension and distrust.

But, of course, none of this would work without the superb acting. Not only do you get to know and care for these characters, they're the ones that really help sell the fact that this mysterious entity, at any moment, could sneak up on any of them, or even be any of them!

Oh, and Rob Bottin's fantastic effects really give life to this "thing". It's amazing, but not surprising, how well effects made in 1982 still hold up to this day, nearly 30 years later.

And much, MUCH more lol.

I don't even think I could list them all. I had to give up.

I thought about adding monster movies like King Kong and Godzilla but I don't classify it as horror for some reason.

I have tons more too, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot. I know some of these are more along the lines of Sci-Fi or Suspense, but I consider them all part-Horror to a degree. Horror is easily my favorite genre and I have so many favorites. They easily make up more than a third of my favorite films.

My favorite scary movies, in no particular order . . .

1) John Carpenter's Halloween 1, 2, and H20 (I refer to these movies as "The Halloween Trilogy")

2) Friday The 13th Parts 1 through 5

3) Black Christmas (1974)

4) Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (the one with Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum)

5) A Nightmare On Elm Street Parts 1 through 3 (it's during Dream Warriors that Freddy begins to tell bad jokes)

6) Poltergeist

7) Amityvcille Horror (original)

8) The Omen (original)

9) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)

10) The Hitcher (original)

11) Jaws 1 & 2

12) Psycho (original)

13) John Carpenter's The Thing

14) Night Of The Living Dead (original)

15) Dawn Of The Dead (both the original and the remake)

16) When A Stranger Calls (original)

17) Rosemary's Baby

18) The Twilight Zone: The Movie (especially John Lithgow in "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet")

19) Creepshow

20) Creepshow 2

21) Psycho 2

22) 28 Days Later

23) 28 Weeks Later

That's all I can think of at 6:00 in the morning. I might add some more later on.

That movie wasn't scary at all, but I guess I could see how it would've been in the 80's.

Depends on your point of view. I grew up in a haunted house, where s#!t like that tends to happen a lot (never to the extremes of the movie, but still . . .). So for me, Poltergeist is a very scary movie. But for someone who thinks "paranormal activity" is just the title of a series of horror movies done in the "found footage" genre, maybe not so much.

Halloween, The Shining, Scream, Alien, The Thing, Psycho.

Audition

Child's Play

High Tension despite the sh**ty ending

Jaws - favorite horror classic as I refuse to go swim by the beach

The Grudge - I had nightmares after watching this

Hostel

Night of The Living Dead (original)

Pumpkinhead

Puppet Master

Scream

When A Stranger Calls (original)

Nightmare on Elm Street (original)

Friday The 13th (remake) - Jason's my favorite horror villain

Halloween (remake) - My favorite modern horror film, great storytelling aside from the lame rape scene

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake)

The Hills Have Eyes (remake)

The Thing (original and "remake")

Halloween (1978)
A Nightmare On ELm Street (1984)
Friday the 13th part 4 (1984)
The Exorcist (1973)
The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
Scream (1996)
Black Christmas (1974)
From Dusk Till Dawn
Dawn of The Dead (1978)
Creepshow
Childs Play
The Texas Chainsaw Massace (1974)
Night Of The Living Dead (1967)
Pumpkinhead
Phantasm
Pet Semetary

and so many more.

Btw, keep in mind that I AM a big fan of the sequels to a lot of these films such as halloween, Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street. However, I didn't add them to my list.

I love pretty much all of them, but if they DON'T have a happy ending, I like them a little bit better. Just makes them a tad more realistic, I think. I mean, the good guys can't really win all the time, right?

Also a big fan of revenge horrors, like Hostel. Gore is also a plus.

There are so many horror movies that I love, but I think my favorites always tend to be the original Friday the 13th and Halloween franchises. I saw so many if those when I was growing up and I still love them.

BTW - Poltergeist was an extremely freaky movie if you were a kid in the 80's and watched that when it came out. It might hold up as well today, but it was awesome then.

One thing against it is When Scary Movie 2 spoofed it with the clown scene. It diminished the scariness for me a little. :oldrazz:

The Thing
Silence of the Lambs
Psycho
Let the Right One in
Alien

These are the big 5 and they are interchangeable (In terms of which is best) so I did not rank them. I think there many other horror films that are good too but these just have much better quality than any of the others I can think of.
