The title says it, but to lay out the rules. The only thing the film has to be to qualify is a sequel made by any Disney studio. It does not even need to be a sequel to a Disney movie. Just a Disney sequel.
Without further ado, my 10 Favorite Disney Sequel:
10. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Thoughts: A film trying to tell the plot of two in the runtime of one, the movie is full of scenes begging for a couple of extra minutes here and there. It is also clearly serving two masters. And yet what I like in this movie, I really like. It reminds me why I fell in love with these characters, while giving me so of my favorite Star Wars moments, if not scenes. Basically inject all the Rey, Poe and Finn scenes and lightsaber porn into my veins.
Better then the Originals?: Middle of the road in terms of the Star Wars flicks imo.
Favorite Character: Rey Skywalker
Favorite Scene: One Last Lesson
9. Finding Dory
Thoughts: In lot of ways this is a remake of the first. That would be an issue if they didn’t do every single thing better. A much stronger take then the original imo. A better A-plot is aided by a much better B-plot then the original. Baby Dory breaks my heart every time and the reunion is one of the most satisfying moments in Pixar history for me. I also like how this movie isn’t afraid to go for it. It knows how crazy the premise is, and doesn’t hold back.
Better then the Original?: Completely.
Favorite Character: Dory
Favorite Scene: Dory Remembers
8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Thoughts: The film that grew the Marvel movies up. A very good spy thriller, hampered only a bit by the ground work the first film did not lay and the aversion to push the premise all the way. Still top notch and a hell of a good time.
Better then the Original?: In every way not named Hayley Atwell.
Favorite Character: Steve Rogers
Favorite Scene: Street Fight
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End
Thoughts: These two pirates films, which tell one story, are way, way, way too long. You could legitimately cut 15 of the first 20 minutes out of DMC and it would be a much better film. One of Disney’s best imo. But that does not change how much I enjoy them. These movies are proper successors to Star Wars and Indy, from the quirky pulse pounding adventures to the lavish sets. Seriously though, just pay attention to the sets in these two movies. They are the best dark rides ever. Oh and that Keira Knightley lady. I am a bit of a fan…
Better then the Original?: Yeah. I enjoy how much more fully realized the idea is over the 5 hours.
Favorite Character: Pirate King Elizabeth Swann
Favorite Scene: The Battle for the Chest
6. The Muppets
Thoughts: I adore the Muppets, and to see a modern flick play to all their strengths was such a treat. This fits so well along side the canon, it is hard for me to imagine a time before it existed.
Better then the Originals?: Yas. It’s my favorite Muppets thing outside of the short lived ABC television show.
Favorite Character: Kermit the Frog
Favorite Scene: Throw Me Again
5. Toy Story 4
Thoughts: I have this weird relationship with the Toy Story movies. I love them, I grew up with them, but I have never found them to be as great as others. They are all really good imo, but I have never found any essential, not even the third, which to me is a legitimately great film. But this fourth one, with it’s oddball characters and almost TV special plot, struck me in a way not even the third did.
Better then the Originals?: Yes. The film narrows the focus of the story down to few characters and in the process tells a fuller story imo. Plus its the only one with Forky, Ducky, Bunny and Duke!
Favorite Character: Woody
Favorite Scene: The Old Plush Rush
4. The Incredibles 2
Thoughts: This took forever and a day, and yet it somehow didn’t end up feeling that way. I loved that it picked up right after the first instead of getting meta, and in turn produced something I felt exceed the first film in most ways. Also it is just absolutely gorgeous.
Better then the Original?: Outside of the villain, yeah. The film does a lot better job dividing the story telling among the four team major characters as opposed to just Mr. Incredible. It also delivers in terms of the animation and laughs in a big way imo.
Favorite Character: Jack-Jack
Favorite Scene: Jack-Jack vs. the Raccoon
3. Frozen 2
Thoughts: A Frozen sequel felt inevitable and yet impossible. What they came up with felt more like it’s own thing then the original, while still feeling like an organic extension of the first and perhaps the best of all of the Disney animated films. There is a depth here that I think might be missed, because these are Disney “princess” movies. But compared to a lot of the classic Disney flicks, this is more Pixar and thus far more realized films imo.
Better then the Original?: Hard to say. I see this more as an extension of the first, then a true sequel. All I know is I find them both rather special, in different ways.
Favorite Character: Anna and Elsa. I cannot chose.
Favorite Scene: Show Yourself
2. Thor: Ragnarok
Thoughts: That this movie was made and such a reflection of the director is a special accomplishment. I love pretty much everything about this movie. The comedy, the dialogue, the little moments, the big moments, and everything in between. The weakest aspect is definitely the villain, but it is only a small blight on this slice of Valhalla.
Better then the Originals?: By Odin’s beard, of course.
Favorite Character: Thor Odinson
Favorite Scene: God of Thunder
1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Thoughts: I literally waited my entire life for this. I had so many emotions in the build up to this one. The purchase, the selection of writer, director, so on and so forth. I swore to myself I wouldn’t follow it and then I saw Daisy and I was done. Twenty months of painstaking waiting left me in a theater on release night. There was no way this could live up to what I wanted it to be and yet, it did. For one shining moment, Star Wars ruled the world again and it was glorious.
Better then the Original?: All but Empire I would say.
Favorite Character: Rey
Favorite Scene: The Jedi Steps
