Really difficult decision for me, I loved the GOTG comics and the movie turned out better than I could have imagined, it's the best MCU for me.

But TFA was just too good, there is almost nothing I would change about TFA, while there is quite a bit I would change about GOTG. Both great Sci-Fi movies and along with Serenity probably my 3 favourite space adventure type movies. But TFA was just so good, I was completely satisfied after seeing it.

TFA vs Serenity though would be even tougher for me.

I just can't choose. They are both very close to each other in quality. And yet, they satisfy elements of a space movie I crave the other one does not. I was disappointed in Ronan, I liked Kylo Ren. I was disappointed in Gamora, I liked Rey. I was disappointed in the general art direction of Star Wars (because it's largely rehashed), but I loved the planets in GOTG. John Williams' score was largely forgettable, Star Lord's 'Awesome mix' was anything but. The space politics of Star Wars was vague, while it was clear in GOTG.

One made up for the lack of something in the other. Both are very good but not great movies. Both have and yet lack ingredients that would transcend them to greatness.

This is a tough one.

I think TFA edges it out just because of BB-8 for me.

This is very tough. They were both very fun films, with great memorable characters and fantastic space action.

I've gotta go with The Force Awakens though.

Can I just say that I like the idea of this thread but as with most of these types of threads I think this ones a little premature. Star Wars is on a major hype train at the moment so I imagine most are gonna vote for that anyway. Not that Star Wars wouldn't win say if this thread were done a year from now but still I think it's best to wait on these things as people often get their real feelings about a film when they have had some distance.

But I voted for Star Wars anyway, I did really like GOTG but SW was a better film in terms if acting, production and it had nostalgia.

Yeah, I could have waited longer, but I wanted to see what people thought ( emphasis on "thought" rather than just knee jerk reactions because SWTFA is the most recent blockbuster - those opinions don't carry a lot of weight).

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how TFA ages. I suspect Guardians will age better, in part because of its distinctive soundtrack - certain songs get associated with films and for a long time I suspect many people won't be able to hear "hooked on a feeling" or "i want you back" without thinking of GOTG.

I really want to see who can look past the hype - which doesn't mean I don't respect people's opinions ( hell, I love SW too !) but I'm interested in who can look past the hype and think "hmmm....this is really good but...."

One thing GOTG definitely doesn't have is the same degree nostalgia value (although it does have a little bit of 70's /80's nostalgia, in a musical sense).

I might take your suggestion and re-do this thread in a year's time and see how opinions on TFA vs GOTG have developed.

GOTG>SWTFA, GOTG more enjoy, more fun and more better.

It is pretty easy...

"The Force Awakens" was just a remake of "A New Hope" - funny, but in general a lame movie, as we saw everthing coming. Nothing new...

"Guardians of the Galaxy" was new, fresh, funny - by FAR the better movie!!

So, GOTG wins by a mile... ;)

I watched them both this week and GotG is perhaps the most original Sci-Fi/Fantasy film since ANH. TFA is a solid, stylish addition to the SW franchise, but it hardly broke new ground.

TFA. GoTG becomes less enjoyable every time I see it.

Both have pretty cliche stories, but TFA wins just because it has a cool female protagonist, plus Harrison Ford. I really like Chris Pratt in general, but Star-Lord is just a typical "*****e with a heart of gold," and I've seen that crap way too often.

For me Star Wars is probably the better film but i enjoyed gotg more. If you know what i mean.

I think GotG did its job better than TFA, or rather I think TFA has more unreached potential than GotG, but I still prefer TFA.

GotG's tone just isn't really for me, past the initial viewing at least.

I never understood the amount of praise GotG recieved.

It was goofy fun but not much else.

TFA has much higher peaks emotionally, visually, and thematically.

Guardians, I liked Star Wars way better the first time I saw it, when it was called A New Hope. And Kylo is supposedly a badass Sith, but barely beats random stormtrooper 28714 and loses to never held a lightsabre before, Rey.

Yeah thats how I saw it. Although I feel that Serenity deserves a nod here - the whole Firefly thing had a star wars vibe and was very original. Guardians took that vibe and ran with it, along the way adding the Marvel story elements and a high level of visual spectacle.
Eg the pod chase inside knowhere I found much more memorable than any of the chase sequnces in TFA.
Anyway, the result felt fresh and exciting - whereas TFA did feel like very much the same old story, Im
W sure there could have been a better balance of old elements and new ( eg Rey was a great protagonist but why did she have to grow up on a desert planet, and get drawn into the conflict by finding a lost droid that contained secret plans)

again None of this is to say TFA wasnt a good star wars movie, or a good movie in general, with some great moments- Han's death being one of them.

One thing that I ll be looking out for in SW episode VIII is how mark hamill measures up against Alec Guiness' obi wan. AG was able to make obi wan an enormously likeable character, whose death we really feel, with a comparatively small bit of screentime ( sadly Liam neeson didnt come close).

I'm pretty confident in going with Guardians. Both films have great sets of protagonists, are incredibly well directed, with great action scenes, but Guardians feels like a more fully formed film, and isn't recycling beats from the same previous film.

I came into this poll knowing the majority would vote for Star Wars. But I like Gaurdians more.

It's the shiny new toy. Honestly, I'd be more interested in this poll in 10 years time to see how both films have aged.

Ha ! If the world's still in one piece (and I am) I'll re-start the thread in December 2025. :)

Well if SW8 and SW9 are much better than GotG2 and GOTG3 then TFA's rep will only get better.

Star wars and its not even close! I consider this a in salt to even compare the 2. GOTG I liked the characters but the movie had like no plot, one of the most lame villains ever, ok action. Star wars on the another hand had a solid plot and it is not new hope 2.0. If you think it is you should make sure to watch it at least twice. First time I thought it was new hope 2.0 but after seeing it again while there are similarities there are a lot of things that make the story new and not just a copy. Star wars is better in ever way, story, action, soundtrack and while I liked the characters in GOTG I liked the characters in star wars even more. Also while GOTG is funny star wars humor is great and even better because it Is funny with out being so cheesy. So star war is better by miles and miles!

If SW8 and SW9 are better and make their own story, I can really see TFA as an forgettable movie that's only job was to introduce new characters and only give proper character arcs to Finn and Kylo.

TFA's rep is ridicilous, it is nothing more than a reboot of a New Hope. :b

At least Ronan didn't mope around, cry like a little girl, and get his butt stomped by someone with no combat training.

A lot of people are saying SW is more emotional but I can't help but disagree. The moment when Groot sacrifices himself by wrapping around the team and proclaiming "We are groot" had me on the verge of tears. I have never been on the verge of tears watching a summer blockbuster before. GOTG is a beast in terms of emotional power.
