Frankly all space movies can suck my **** but that being said I enjoyed GotG considerably more than SW7.

GotG 8/10
SW7 7/10

Wow what a sham that star wars only has 56% when it is a great movie and when GOTG was a ok kind of bad movie I am shocked!

I loved Guardians, but TFA had a better villain and climax, so it goes to Star Wars.

GOTG by far. TFA had an enjoyable first half but then it got uninteresting. The action, visual effects, dialogue, style, etc. are better in GOTG. Heck even the villain was better, that emo/hipster villain in TFA was cringeworthy

The villain in TFA was cringeworhtly lol. The villain in GOTG got beat by a dance off and didn't even really have a story.

I also think Ronan was a superior villain to Kylo, but for the sake of continuity, it would be hard to believe that Ren had Skywalker blood if he didn't pout and whine at least a little.

I actually liked Ren. But as far as the behind-the-scenes villains, Thanos was far better than Snoke.

I simply don't get the hate for Kylo Ren. Is it really that hard to accept a villain that isn't constantly brooding and intimidating?

Let's break it down

Star Lord > Finn
Rey > Gamora
Han & Chewie > Rocket & Groot (but not by much)

Nova-Prime > Leia
The Collector > Maz
Yondu > Hux
Nebula > Captain Phasma
The First Order > the Nova Corp

New fan favorite:

Cameo:
Luke > Stan Lee

Planet destroying weapon:
Infinity Stone - Star Killer base tie

Action
GOTG > TFA

They're pretty even.

Guardians of the Galaxy. Own merit, no heavy fandom backing it when it came out, and it kicked butt. It was funny, exciting and the story enthralled just a little more than The Force Awakens. Kylo was a better villain than generic terrorist Ronan, but still. It beats it by a little in my book. Snoke and Thanos are about even, right now. Thanos, I'm sure, will be a breakout villain. Hopefully like the comic, obsessed and in love with Death. Not just power and yadda yadda. But Snoke might end up to be quite a character, too. We'll have to see.

But yea, Guardians was more fun to me.

After watching both movies in the span of a few weeks, I'm going with Guardians of the Galaxy on this one. I'm a huge Star Wars fan but The Force Awakens did very little for me and felt rather boring when I saw it a second time (my brother actually fell asleep half-way through). GOTG ranks among my favorite MCU movies, whereas TFA ranks at the very bottom as my least-favorite SW movie.

Wow ! This thread is still much closer than I thought it would be.

What do people think about SWTFA's RT score, 93% (whereas SW ANH has 94% ) ?

In comparison GOTG has 91%.

Personally, if I were the only critic on Earth, and I had to rank them out of 100 (which is not how RT works, but is a convenient method for comparison)

I would give SWANH 100%, it's pretty much perfect (like James Cameron's Aliens) it changed moviemaking itself and has had a lasting impact on Western culture.

I would give GOTG between 85 - 90%. It's huge fun and wonderful to watch, but I don't think it's going to have anywhere near the lasting impact SW has had. I still maintain that GOTG is the film that has best captured the SW (and this is SW ANH) vibe since that first film came out - I mean, when they first fly into Nowhere it's a "whooaaa" moment, kind of like in SWANH when they get tractored into the Death Star.

I would give SWTFA about 75%. It's a good movie, fun to watch, but there's nothing really that special about it, nothing that will change film-making.
It's good, but we've seen it all before.

Anyway, I think the 93% is vastly overinflated score.

Interesting that critics are willing to give movies a real pass if they have the SW moniker - I mean, Attack of the Clones got 65% and really deserves around 30%, it's garbage - a boring story, badly acted, poorly paced and salvaged only by a couple of decent action scenes - although even then there is a complete lack of suspense (we never feel that the main characters are ever in serious jeopardy - a lot like Phantom Menace, which I believe is actually a better film, because the kid was a much better actor than Haden Christensen).

Thoughts ?

TFA easily for me. I really enjoyed GotG, but with every re-watch, I feel like I like it a little less. A lot of the humor feels forced or falls flat, Ronan was a huge waste of a great source character and a great actor, and Gamora was one hell of a weak female lead, imo. I've seen TFA 5 times now and aside from a few moments of forced/flat humor, it all still works very well for me. And it's got a better female lead and a villain that's an actual character.

Kylo Ren was definitely one of the highlights for me in TFA. In a movie that was a copy of Episode IV (and a bit of V) to a good extent, Kylo felt like something really fresh. A villain that was trying to be more than he is, and also tempted by the light side which is a twist on everything the Force in Star Wars has been this far.

All the new characters worked great, but if there's any I would utter any complaint about it was that Rey became too powerful and special at the end. Perhaps due to that the movie didn't quite convey the reaction Kylo had due to his deed at the end in the script. I'd pin that on the director who could have made that clearer.

Yes. The villain has to be threatening, and that is undermined when he spends the majority of his screen time crying, then he gets beaten by a noob.

Contrast Ren with Daredevil's Kingpin. D'onofrio's Kingpin was shown to have some deep childhood scars, but he was able to compartmentalize those as an adult and be truly vicious. He also beat the living crap out of the fledgling Daredevil in their first physical encounter.

I've been an avid Star Wars fan since I saw ANH in it's original theatrical run. However, I can still admit that the Anakin/Luke whinefests initially hindered both characters from being the avatars of dark/light power that they eventually became. A character doesn't need to be emotionally weak to be complicated.

Shouldn't Gamora be compared to Finn and Starlord to Rey? Both Gamora and Finn are traitors of the antagonist group, are the ones that tend to be saved, and serve as "love interest" for the leads. Starlord and Rey are scavengers of sorts at the start of the film, separated from people they loved, and know how to handle themselves in tough situations.
