Guardians of the Galaxy is too much of a cluster fruz to be an even remote success.
Nobody knows who the characters are, and their wibbly wobbly timey wimey alternate universe thing is a bit much to absorb in one movie.

Whether they are known or not is irrelevant. Completely irrelevant. How many original pieces of fiction have been successes?

Look at Pirates of the Caribbean for example. Jack Sparrow is now one of the most iconic fictional characters ever. Hell to keep it closer to home, Iron Man and Thor weren't exactly that popular outside of comics and mythology geeks.

With distinct characters like Starlord, Rocky, Groot, Drax, Gamora, and the whole rag tag team dynamic, spectacular visuals and fun, pulpy sci-fi vibe, it could definitely have an audience and those characters could definitely become iconic. The key with GotG is to not play it completely straight. It needs to have an almost black comedy, surreal, satirical edge to it. It's a ridiculous concept, it should be aware of that, but at the same time not go into parody.

Like i said before, it needs some real stars in the line up though. Like a Brad Pitt for Peter Quill, channelling some Aldo Raine. A Dwayne Johnson for Drax. A Jason Statham or Ray Winstone for Rocket Raccoon. A Salma Hayek for Gamora.

With a great script and a director with a distinct and well thought out vision, GotG could be fantastic.

Whoever the f*** they want can be on the team as long as Rocket Raccoon is involved.

there is no way to make a talking racoon COOL in a movie.
the reason the Marvel films do so well is because they ditched a lot of the over-the-top cheese from the comics.

That shows a distinct lack of imagination, which continues to surprise me on this forum, which is called superhero hype. Rocky is a bad ass. He's not a cutesy furry little animal. He's a hard drinking, gobby piece of **** who has a penchant for guns that are twice the size of him.

Have him voiced by someone like Ray Winstone, Bob Hoskins or Jason Statham and try to tell me that wouldn't be cool.

It honestly sounded like Bob Hoskins in the animated version of Rocket Raccoon on AEMH.

Bob Hoskins would be even better.
You'd definitely want someone with more voice acting experience. Bob Hoskins is a good sort of character actor for those kinds of voices. I'd be dubious of Statham, kind of a waste of a body too.

Ray Winstone has got a lot of voice acting experience. Just imagine his Beowulf rants... coming out of Rocky's mouth. It'd be absurdly brilliant.

Yeah, The Raccoon's a must-have. Honestly, I think this movie is IMO the coolest & most creative thing to come outta Feige yet. I remember when Heavy Metal came out. I ******* loved it. It was deliciously twisted & insane, and quite ridiculous. But it just tapped into that part of the mind that most people in the medium were afraid to explore. It was true pulp - which is exactly what GOTG oughtta be. Hoskins has my vote for voicing The Raccoon. As far as directors go, Fred Dekker would be a wet dream. Or Nick Castle. Do I think this movie can make money? Not really. But I frankly don't give a ****. If they do it right, if they can manage to walk that thin line between serious sci-fi & bubblegum pulp without falling face first into either of the two, this could be what Snyder was hoping Sucker Punch would be. That's what was so great about these kinds of comics back in the 80s. Specially Silver Surfer. You can explore this endless void that is the universe & you do it through the eyes of wacky aliens.

Totally agreed. It's gotta have a twisted, kinda surreal edge to it for it to work.

BS. I haven't even heard of GotG until lately, but the concept of a badass talking Racoon, especially if voiced right, is pretty F**king Awesone.

It continues to baffle me how so many superhero fans have a lack of imagination. Anything is possible in the world of superheroes, that's what makes the genre great.

I met Starlin at a con years back & I remember talking movies with him & how they influenced his take on cosmic exploration in the books & he always kept bringing up drug use. Frankly, I find that brilliant. I mean, what better way to capture the state of mind of the sentinel of the spaceways than by comparing cosmic isolation to existential intoxication? This is the stuff you can explore in GOTG. What the **** makes these people tick? They don't have any of the restraints we have on Earth because they operate outside of the very margin of what we consider "existence". We're talking about the realm between realms, which is where they roam. Limbo. Sun don't rise nor set. Your entire day is like an extended acid trip. Do these people even sleep? If they do is it a random habit or do they have to induce it with narcotics? Are they simply beyond basic primitive needs because they live to serve this nomadic purpose? Again, you can address ALL these questions whilst bombarding the audience with intrinsic music.

haha that's awesome. You could always tell the writers were on some **** back in the day. The whole idea of GotG being like a surreal acid trip is awesome. And the score has gotta be really unique.

They should really think outside the box for the score. Like what they did with Tron Legacy. Vangelis and Blade Runner springs to mind also. Get someone like i dunno, The Crystal Method or something. Or even the one they call Reznor.

More than anything this post makes me really want to see Grant Morrison get around to doing that Silver Surfer story he had in the works.

^don't even get me started on the endless potential there is for a Silver Surfer movie. Its ******* endless. That character has so much to give. I'd love it if FOX went after Aronofsky again, only this time for a Surfer film. I mean, it could be the ultimate CBM abstract piece that would level TDK. He's basically in hell. Isolated, bound, broken & emotionally disconnected. The concept of exploring a character with said traits in deep [DEEP] space are again, just endless. Same goes for GOTG. Hopefully with GOTG, the studio can embrace a very oblique tone rather than go the Star Trek route. As much as I love Star Trek, ST & GOTG aren't even remotely close. Sure, one could see the studio trying to emulate Abrams' film because it performed well, but it would truly be a disservice to the material. You need a film that's about more than just "the current mission". A film that dissects this bizarre state of mind. 2001, Alien, Sunshine, Moon...thrown in a blender with LSD & bubblegum. Its pulp heaven.

If RR can look half as real as Gollum or in King Kong did in their respective movies, He is worth having. Introducing a talking Raccoon is in no way far fetched as we are finally entering into the idea that the MCU is more than just Earth and Asgard. [BLACKOUT]Thanos'[/BLACKOUT] tease has opened up a completely new world of possibilities for the MCU.

Bring on the Raccoon. Just have Groot, too. lol.

Remind me again why RR and Groot "Wouldn't work" in a movie (despise that phrase BTW)

If done right Rocket Raccoon will become the next Hulk. Especially if he's like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hDjttNGgYA A fricken raccoon with giant guns and a dirty mouth.

Marvel has a comic out now called "Avengers Assemble," which more or less follows the MCU version of the characters. What's interesting about that as it pertains to GOTG is that the current ish, #6, features GOTG on the front teamed up with MCU Avengers (Cap, Thor, IM, Hulk, Hawkeye, Widow). To me, that shows a very good chance that this is the GOTG lineup they want to use for the film.

And if that's the case, the MCU lineup would be Drax, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Bug and Starlord.

And it's also interesting that Avengers Assemble #6 features MCU Avengers and GOTG teaming up to fight Thanos. 'Nuff said.

^Good work, Detective. This consolidates the notion that GOTG is the new MCU property being introduced in Phase II come May 2014. I'm sure we'll get an announcement soon. My theory is that after The GOTG & The Avengers get leveled by Thanos in Avengers 2, Warlock will pop up after the credits providing a glimmer of hope for the heroes (and the universe). Tony: "Who the hell are you? The Wizard of Oz?" Warlock: "I'm your only chance." CUT TO BLACK.

Yeah, it kinda surprised me that the version of GOTG in AA #6 didn't include Warlock. He's really a must for the Thanos saga.

It's good to see the GotG back in action. But under the pen of Bendis? Ehhhh. The Thanos appearance in Avengers Assemble 3 was atrocious. Terrible dialogue.

cherokee, I'm actually happy with the idea of Warlock not being part of The GOTG. I'd rather they introduce him after the first bout with Thanos. His role can be that of hope. He's got an ace up his sleeve & The Avengers will welcome anyone who has the slightest edge on The Titan. Sucks to hear Groot probably won't make it to the roster. Love that guy. Any ideas for casting on Warlock & The GOTG? I liked hearing Dwayne Johnson amongst the candidates. I've always wanted him in one of these films as some larger than life entity. His acting ain't worth mentioning, but he's just got that look I can completely buy into were he to be playing Drax or Gladiator or Rhino. Alexander Skarsgard could make a good Warlock.

Yea the role of Drax doesn't require a great actor really. But Johnson would have to be a bit more understated and grim, almost mute really. But his physical presence, that's not something that's easy to come by.

I think Quill needs a big name actor, someone who has a strong presence and is a bit older and world weary. I've seen someone mention Noomi Rapace for Moondragon, that could work. Or even as Gamora would be interesting.

And Rocket has gotta be voiced by Hoskins or Winstone.

Have you seen the movie Faster? Johnson did the grim, violent, almost silent force of energy pretty well there.
