He played Bolg in the Hobbit, but I can't say that requires acting. He seems to play big strong men more than anything else (ETA: He was also in Spartacus).
It's also possible that this could be played to an advantage. They might be able to play the character convincingly by playing him as a "simple giant." Basically, the character has to be someone both threatening and likeable. You have to know he could hurt people, but also not blame him for that. Both of the previous two suggestions seem good for at least that. Even if the actor can't portray subtleties of mental illness, they can still edit it in a way that he doesn't have to. After all, just like in court, it'll be his lawyers and his psychiatrist who make the case for him.
Ok, i haven't seen the Hobbit yet but that actor has got the look. Dominic Purcell was both believable as a caring older brother as well as a tough guy on Prison Break. Not to mention he's got the look of Gladiator too. Guy's built like a brick house.
