I think that all the actors in the "lead" roles did a great job of bringing he characters to life. To me Ledger, Eckhart and Oldman are the ones who stand out, not to say that the other actors do great job, but that's just my opinion. Eckhart did a great job of bringing my favorite character to life, but I have to say it, I feel his time as Two-Face was a bit rushed, but that's just because I would have love to see him in a third movie, where we'd get to go even deeper into his mind. But for what they wanted to archieve with this movie I have to say it was perfect. All the minor characters Maroni, The Chechen ect. also did a great job, my favorite would be The Chechen.

1. Heath Ledger - Mesmerizing. Heath turns in the ultimate villain-you-love-to-hate performance. Ledger portrays the Joker as a heartless, disfigured, irrational terrorist who also happens to be a charming, almost romantic figurehead for the nonconformist in all of us. Definitely NOT an overrated performance.

2. Aaron Eckhart - Eckhart's Dent is as likeable a guy as one could ever imagine for a person in his position. He is just so natural in that role. Watch how he keeps himself busy while delivering his lines. Nothing seems like acting. Definitely an underrated performance. Eckhart just got overshadowed, plain and simple.

3. Gary Oldman - Oldman is as good an actor as you'll find when he's working on a solid project. Like Ledger, Oldman totally disappears into the role of Jim Gordon. I love the kind of quiet and unassuming demeanor he brings to the role. Of course, he ramps it up when the adrenaline is going, and that is a great portrayal of the kind of guy people would want to follow. Brilliant work by Oldman.

This is one of those "DUH" questions for me

Ledger was the complete standout from a surprisingly ordinary supporting cast they where good but apart from HL we know what we where going to get.

Im by no means HL jokers biggest fan but he was good but do think it is overated carried by the label of Joker and helped by a good script but the Lip smacking eye rolling act, though eyecatching and interesting at first,(who didnt love the mob scene?) gets a bit predictable after the second appearance he doesnt progress but stays at a cetain level throughout the movie. Despite all this it got to a point where you sit there waiting for him appear again because the other cast members didnt bring anything truly specialt to the table to occupy the spaces inbetween .

Bale again was largely on autopilot from what he is capable of and what the script could have given him. he seemed all talk with no substance beneath it as Bruce and his batman had no sense of Legend about it, it just didnt seem this was the Dark Knight of Gotham city to me it was just bale in a suit he didnt try to create a persona for it save for the bad voice.

Gary Oldma was okay but his Gordon seemed far to weedy the steel beneath the older guy vibe where he beats Flass in year One is nowhere to be seen Oldman is a master at times but his gordon was nothing special imo.

Eckhart is was good but i always said, and i maintain, that he is a decent journyman actor whos element is indie movies he just couldnt produce the rage in a way that, say, Sean Penn can when he is in full flow also his madness progressed in an unbalanced way it went far to fast from A to B and killing him off was Noland biggest mistake.

Morgon Freeman was great he was playing "red" from Shwshack once again but so what? he brought an air of intelligence in manner and speech to the film that should have come from Bale, i still hate the fact he was Nolans Q though.

I can't say that anyone gave bad performance.
With that said, I think that Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart were the best.
Christian Bale seemed a bit better in BB.
Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman all gave nice and solid performances, but their characters weren't that important (though Gordon was a bigger figure, compared to BB).
Maggie Gyllenhaal was average, but I don't really have anything bad to say about her.
The rest - Eric Roberts, Anthony Michael Hall, Ritchie Coster, Nestor Carbonell and co. are in too small and unimportant roles to actually count, but again, none of them was bad. On the contrary - both BB and TDK had great supporting casts.

^^ Agreed about the mob guys and the smaller roles - although I DO think Ritchie Coster was under used and not really given enough to work with as the Chechen (considering the caliber of actor he is - brilliant in shows like John Adams, CSI and Law & Order)

I loved the Chechen character though (well obviously, lol)

Maggie wasn't too bad, she was a decent enough Rachel.

Michael Caine was just Michael Caine though! Almost expected him to say 'You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!' :p

I second that.
They all did a great job.

Loved Gary Oldman, and nice work from Aaron Eckhart. I wasn't expecting to see Two-Face in this second instalment and realy appreciated him in the film, more than Harvey Dent.
