X-MEN

The Characters and Their Universe

by Michael Mallory

"What a beautiful, totally impressive book!
I can't imagine any X-Men fan wanting to go through life without it!"
- Stan Lee
They are more than simply humans...they possess something extra...they are the X-Men. Among the most popular superhero characters of our time, Marvel Comics' "X-Men" are also among the most distinctive teams to emerge from the plethora of costumed crime fighters. "Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them," the mutant X-Men face not only against diabolically evil villains, but also the bigotry and prejudice of those for whom they fight. X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe tells the story of this unique band of comic book heroes from their creation in 1963 by the dream team of writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, through their late 1970s re-emergence as a platform for socially and politically relevant storytelling, and up to the present as one of the globe's hottest franchises. This colorful, lavishly-illustrated volume also traces how the characters have been adapted into the media of television and film, including the groundbreaking 1992 animated series and the blockbuster feature films.
Through exclusive interviews with many of the key creators and contributors to the X-Men Universe from all media—among them Stan Lee, Chris Claremont and John Romita from the comics, and Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Sir Ian McKellen, Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner from the world of film—X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe tells the complete story of how these strange and often unlikely heroes have transcended the illustrated page to become part of our collective consciousness.

For fans of the comic books, this volume also provides a unique one-source catalogue of every major character that appeared from 1963 to the present, including all the various teamings of characters, the significant comic book series, the various character relationships and evolutions, and the classic storylines that have all woven together over the decades to create the dazzlingly complex and fascinating tapestry of world of mutants. X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe is a book that no fan of Marvel Comics, of super heroics, of animation and action adventure filmmaking, even of popular culture of the late 20th century itself, will want to be without.

Yeah i'd probably buy it as well but it's a little too pricy at the moment IMO. I forgot to add that the book is 320 pages long.

Me too, with classic artwork. Magneto and Xavier on opposite sides. Perfect!

Haha. I have this book. I remembered something being posted about it a long time ago, but I had completely forgotten about it.

Haha. Sorry. I know. In short, it's big. It moreso provides a history of the X-Men as a product, in addition to touching upon the various characters, etc . . . but the book is not just one of those large character encyclopedias, so it doesn't go as in depth into the X-Men universe as one of those does. I’ll provide info. on the various sections for you guys.

This is the forward by Bryan Singer.

Some people might not know this, but I arrived a little late for the X-Men party. It was already a crowded room, filled with white hair, bald heads, blue fur, and lots of yellow spandex. There seemed to be hundreds of mutants, while their fans numbered in the millions—and they were very, VERY passionate. This party was over thirty years old, and when I walked in, it felt like one of those classic moments where the record player scratched, the music stopped, and everyone fell deathly silent. All eyes were on me. Watching. Waiting to see what I would do.

It was awkward at first. I had never read an X-Men comic book. Back then, Nightcrawler was just another name for a worm. Wolverine and Sabretooth could have been sports teams, and Rogue and Mystique sounded like women’s perfumes. And those were just their codenames, never mind their real names, histories, conflicts, and an endless amount of powers.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a family album or users manual to this complex universe, so instead of shyly standing in a corner, I dove in. I met everyone. I read the comics and watched the cartoons until I was as blue in the face as Beast. What I quickly discovered was that beyond the telekinetics, shapeshifters, and teleporters, X-Men contained a very poignant and relevant human story, one about outcasts.

There are times when we all feel like mutants. Whether it’s the first day at a new school, a new job, or leaving the nest and venturing out into the real world, our lives are dotted with periods where we just don’t fit in. For most, the awkward moments might be temporary, but for some, they seem to last a lifetime. In our world this isolation might be a matter of race, sexuality, or religion—various factors that cause us to feel like an outsider, even among friends and family.

These themes of identity and the struggle of a minority are what appealed to me the most. It gave the comic book a heart—a message. Something that made me feel oddly comfortable among these misfits. I saw a bit of myself in these characters, and in a way, I became one of them.

So while my introduction to the X-Men came a little later than others and might have been a little awkward at first, it was the beginning of a friendship that has lasted to this day. A book like this might have made the introduction a little easier, but whether you’re a lifelong fan or a new recruit like I was, think of the following pages as the “X-Men family album” that I never had. Just don’t be too surprised if you find yourself becoming one of them.

Here is a breakdown of the book and its various sections.

Mutants Among Us is a brief introduction to mutantcy and the world in which the X-Men find themselves.

The Birth of a Legend provides insight into the development of the original X-Men, including various inspirations for the characters, etc. It discusses how the comic book came to be and the individuals responsible for its creation.

X-Men Revitalized details the reinvigoration of the comic book by introducing the all new, all different X-Men (Colossus, Storm, Wolverine, etc.) It also covers the likes of Rogue, Gambit, and other prevalent X-heroes. Commentaries from the likes of Chris Claremont and Stan Lee in both this and the previous section make for a pretty interesting read.

The Dark Side of Mutantcy details the various bad mutants and their history with the X-Men.

It Can Happen Here presents a few pages about the political turmoil featured in the X-Men Universe.

The World of X-Men discusses merchandising and features various pictures of X-Men toys.

Mutants in the Media houses everything X-Men media related, whether it be Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, the Animated Series, the Generation X television show, or all three X-men movies. There are full page spreads housing various character concept drawings (Pryde of the X-Men, X-Men: Evolution, etc.), and a number of pages are dedicated to each of the films.

The Age of Mutants provides an up to date look at the X-Men universe and the extent to which it has grown over the years, including the likes of the New Mutants, Generation X, the New X-Men, etc.

Alternate Realities and Strange Worlds observes the various alternate realities that litter the X-Men universe.

Days of Future: Future briefly questions where the X-Men will go from here.

Also, there is a timeline featured at the end of the book mapping the history of the X-Men, whether it be Sinister’s first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #221 or the Animated Series' television debut.

For the most part, the book is presented in chronological order, incorporating the various sections as it goes along. “X-Treme Close-Ups,” which are multi-page character biographies, are scattered throughout the book. There are a multitude of large, full-page picture displays featuring both classic and more recent images of the X-Men. As I said earlier, the book is big. It is comprised of 288 large pages filled with information, and it’s a good read, but don't expect it to delve too deeply into the mythos.

Here are a handful of pictures to give you an idea of the extent of the book's layout. Mods feel free to remove these images if need be. I'm not sure if it's okay to post these as you can't particularly read the actual articles.

29 bucks? Amazon are selling it for $47.25, Barnes and Noble $54.00 and Costco are listing it as $44.99 and thats not even including packaging/shipping costs. Similar books like the DC Comics encyclopedia cost me much less than that so thats why i say 'expensive'.

I'll buy it eventually though as i'm sure the price will drop.

I got it from Amazon.co.uk - cost was £23 (=$44), shipping was free under the 'free super saver delivery' option (free shipping on order over a certain cost). I don't know how that delivery option applies to those outside the UK.

Free delivery would also apply on amazon.com for those in the US.

nice scans- any rogue or iceman?

Ok that looks cool, I might get that.

only £23.10 here!
