Who here is multilingual

If you are truley interested, go to a used book store and pick up a Mandarin study book. See if its something you would want to follow up on.

I would say that if you have the time, you could potentially pick up more and more. I know its easier to pick them up as a child, but I think a part of that is due to the less amount of time you spend working on things of this nature as an adult.

This convo is making me want to go pick up a new book in french. I usually do that once a month or so, as most of my french friends moved awhile away, and dont catch up with them as much as I would like to.

My friend gave me a beginners Mandarin book, it's been collecting dust though, kind of preoccupied with school, recreation, sex, homework, and work.
Definitely an interest of mine though, anything spoken by hundreds of millions of people has to be useful.

Time is a big issue, and keeping up with things is as well. Lots of people will pick up on a language, but if you stop for say a month, you'll of lots so much.

Earlier, we brought up french hip hop. I have a suggestion for you, Spoons. Check out some of these french artists. If you are into hip hop, you will love them. French rap, for the most part, is similar to some old school rappers. You wont really find too many that rap about what american rappers rap about.

personally, my favorite french artist is La Rumeur, who reminds me of Common. But, you can never go wrong with the granddaddy of french rap, MC Solaar. He is amazing.

EDIT

If you are into rock, check out Pleymo. They are basically the band that got me into hard rock/metal type music. While they used to be incredibly anti american, they have grown musically now. They remind me of a french Incubus at sometimes.

This is how I am with Dutch, at the moment. I want to get back into it, as its another fun language to learn.

Dutch, German, Swedish, Icelandic, all these languages seem quite difficult to grasp.

Right now, my strategy for learning language is a functional one.
I check out how many people worldwide speak the language. If it is an important business language. And if it is used in many beautiful countries I may hope to one day visit.

That's one of the reasons Spanish was a no brainer for me.

Thanks, definitely be checking these out.
This is what I love about foreign rap, a lot of it isn't stuck on the slangin' rock, pimpin' hoes, and bustin' caps in asses.

Personally I like music with a message, I kind of believe one of the important aspects of music is that it can raise awareness, and make you think. Whether it be old folk music about Vietnam, or Immortal Technique getting profound.

here is some of each of them.

Pleymo- Adriniline

(if you like rock music at all, listen to this. Its amazing)

Hahaha, thats one I never heard. I had quite a few Korean friends in shanghai, but they were into Korean bubblegum pop type stuff.

Some K-pop is pretty decent. One of my best friends in high school was half-Korean, and we listened to all kinds of Korean music. Her favorite was H.O.T. though...really popular Korean boy band in the 90's lol. We used to watch their concerts on videotape.

Yeah, I know HOT. Thats one of the bands that they all listened to.

I have the problem of dabbling in languages but never taking the time to fully learn them. I can speak bits of Japanese, enough to understand the basics, some Latin and a little Italian I learned from my family as a kid. My Spanish is so-so, enough to follow conversation and read, but not really enough to speak it well. I fully intend on finishing what I started at some point, I just don't know when.

I've been raised bilingually, I knew Russian and Estonian. After I moved to Germany I almost completely forgot Estonian due to lack of practising and am kind of still bilingual, only it's German instead of Estonian.
My English ain't too bad, either (it's not perfect, but better than my French and Spanish, I don't even wanna talk about Latin). I also understand bits of spoken Chinese and Japanese.
Starting to re-learn Estonian seems like a good idea, but the grammar looks pretty complicated.

Yeah, english, yoruba and i can read french pretty well...

also studied latin and german in school.

I speak english and french as well as understanding farsi. I really have no merit given I was educated in the US until 14 and then moved to Paris.

My girlfreind, however, speaks fluent english, german, french, dutch and spanish.

I've let my Spanish lapse quite a bit. My wife is a native speaker, though, and one of the things we definitely plan to do with the child we have due in July is to give them the gift of learning both English and Spanish. I'm sure I'll get my Spanish back and then some when we start teaching our kid that language.

jag

You need to get your sexy back before Spanish.

I'm almost fluent in Spanish and I speak a little Bosnian.
