And no, not Brett Ratner.

I imagine it will be a hired gun who doesn't mind directing a script he or she had no input in. So the Brad Birds and any other "name" director is out.

Noam Murro (300: Rise of an Empire, some Halo spots)
Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent)
Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown, Non-Stop)
Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad)
Allen Hughes (The Book of Eli, Broken City)

I would go with Fleischer if those were the choices. At least that had some comedic elements to it.

I would go with the guys who did the Lego movie and 21 Jump Street if they weren't busy.

Lord and Miller wouldn't even think about that. They're smart, creative dudes who'll have four 100+ movies in a row. 0% chance.

Marvel will announce a director by the end of next week I imagine seeing as they are set on keeping to the release date. They said an announcement for director would follow shortly

Oh I know that. Like I said, it won't be anyone who can probably get their own movie greenlit these days. It will be someone with probably an action pedigree. But if the tone of this movie is supposed to be like Wright's other films, then you need someone who has also done some comedy.

Maybe Favreau again? Despite what happened on IM2, he still seems to have a good relationship with Marvel.

Busy with Jungle Book... ;)

True but that's also a Disney movie right? I can see top execs shuffling things around in order to keep Ant-man's date.

David Twohy (Riddick, A Perfect Getaway)? Jon Turtelbaub (National Treasure, The Sorcerer's Apprentice)?

God no not Turtletaub.

Joe Dante? (Gremlins)

I would love to see Ivan Reitman be considered. I know people are going to bring up his more recent dud action comedies, but he has the right spirit for this project.

Perhaps marvel will choose one of their Doctor Strange candidates like Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine or Brave director Mark Andrews

Werner Herzog or Lars von Trier for Ant-Man just for the lolz.

Levine will start shooting his Xmas comedy with Rogen and JGL very soon. Think for Andrew it would be too complicated to make his live action debut after 6-8 weeks of pre-production.

Len Wiseman?

Wiseman? Why not Paul WS Anderson while we're at it.

I remember when Nation Treasure 2 had it's trailers and they kept on saying 'A Film by Jon Turtelbaub', and I was like 'Who the heck is that?"

I'm with you in your thinking there. He's good with fun action. Not to forget, both him and Michael Douglas were big in the 80s. Now I really want Ivan Reitman for the job.
And if that doesn't work out, go with other icons of the glorious decade: John Landis, Robert Zemeckis, Walter Hill.
Joe Dante has been suggested in this thread too.

I would much rather see John Landis on this than Ivan Reitman - Ivan's been riding John's coat tails ever since ANIMAL HOUSE...

Dante once complained that he only gets offered movies with small characters like Gremlins or Small Soldiers - so ANT MAN would fit right in...

Joe Dante once said during a Q&A in Vienna last fall, that while he'd love to do a superhero movie sometime he'd do it only if the film is his vision and his vision only. He needs a certain amount of creative freedom or else he wouldn't do it.
That said, if Dante and MS can agree on a vision I could see them working together sometime. (In fact, he's on the top of my wishlist for a Dr. Strange movie) BUT! as a last minute replacement for another director's movie? That would be everything he said he doesn't want to do

Marvel should probably cancel this film now. It's Scott Lang instead of Hank Pym. Pym was horribly aged and even Pym is a B-list hero who's only interesting when he's on the Avengers and not as a solo hero.

Marvel mentioned having scripts for Captain Marvel and Blade and Feige has mentioned being a fan of Black Panther. Why not use one of them since they're far more popular heroes and none seem likely to appear in Phase 3?

I remember Feige once saying that Ant-Man was only being made since it was Edgar Wright. Now that he's gone, what's the draw for a potential audience for a character who audiences may have trouble taking seriously?

As far as I can recall, none of the Ant-Men have had great runs on the comics like the above three. Christopher Priest's Black Panther, Marv Wolfman's Tomb of Dracula and all three books starring Carol Danvers (Claremont, Reed and DeConnick) are well-regarded by fans. I can't think of a single great, essential solo Hank Pym work since Stan Lee's Tales to Astonish. Nearly all of his stories since 1965 have just been Avengers titles. Hell, he even lost his own book to Hulk at that time. Now when Ultron is no longer part of his character arc, he's not really needed for any role.

Amongst the other choices, BP has been a member of the Avengers for decades and was part of the team during the Kurt Busiek run along with Jonathan Hickman's current Avengers work, Captain Marvel was part of the team during Kurt Busiek's run and even became the field leader under Bendis and now Blade was the most recent Ronin and just joined the Avengers a short while ago. Any of these three can fit. Alternately, I wouldn't mind a solo film for War Machine or Black Widow.

Phase 3 right now is

Ant-Man
Cap 3
Doctor Strange
Thor 3
Hulk 2
Avengers 3

Why not bump off Ant-Man and give fans a character that we really want?
