I say Peter Jackson . If he can't commit to it then wait until he is available.

Jackson would be ideal but seeing as he's taking himself out of the running I'm hoping for Cuaron. I love Del Toros work but its all starting to have a definite Del Toro look and feel to it, not that that's a bad thing and I sure as heck wouldnt complain if it was GDT.

If Peter Jackson does not do it, then I'd like to see Del Toro take a shot at it. I think he would do the movie justice, and he is very talented in his own right.

This Sir Ian McKellan fellow might be a good choice. I hear he has a good eye for direction.

In all seriousness, Guillermo Del Toro is one of my favorite directors, but he is NOT right for the Hobbit. Firstly, it's much lighter in tone than what he usually does(though I'm sure he could adapt to it), he'd have been better for the trilogy itself than the Hobbit. But mostly, Del Toro has a fantastic visual sense. And that's just it, if he made the Hobbit, it would look like a Del Toro film, it would not fit in with the rest of the Peter Jackson trilogy. We'd probably get an amazing film but it would stand out far too much.

Keep Cuaron as far the hell away from these films as possible! Has anyone seen what he did to POA. He sucks at adapting. He has a beautiful style, but his ability to adapt is absolutely frightening.

I'd question whether or not it is actually Del Toro's style. The Hobbit if I remember right, isn't some dark, gothic book. It is fairly light hearted compared to most of Tolkein's work. If I could see Del Toro directing any Tolkein book it probably would've been Return of the King.

The Children of Hurin is right up Del Toro's alley.

I don't know who should be given the job, but I hope Raimi is kept far away from this franchise.

I'd refer P.J. of course, but if not him, then either Del Toro or Ron Howard.
