Whos Should Direct?

Since Campbell is probably not going to direct the next Bond film, who do you think or wish it would be?

January 31, 2007 - With the next James Bond film slated to begin filming in January 2008 for a November 2008 release, EON Prods. will need to hire a director soon in order to make those dates.

After Roger Michell backed out of helming the sequel to the franchise's highest grossing entry, Casino Royale, it was reported that Royale and GoldenEye helmer Martin Campbell would be sitting in the director's chair once again for Bond 22.

Alas, it appears that the Campbell reports were wishful thinking.

While doing press for Casino Royale's debut in China -- the first Bond film to ever be released there -- Campbell advised the AFP that it was highly unlikely he would return to helm the next installment.

I agree with you, but he pretty much said he's not going to return. I'm having difficulty thinking of a director for the project.

Thing is with Bond films they won't go for someone with to individual a style so it'll probably end up being someone we wouldn't pick ourselves

Remember the days when they had certain directors to do the films? his should happen again..with Campbell top of the list..

"Layer cake" had a nice direction and he worked very well with Craig.

Vaughn's an interesting choice but if Campbell's not returning - I'd plump for Doug Liman.

i would prefer him to return to continue the story.Chris nolan would be intresting though obviousely he is busy.I think they will come out with someone from left field,someone we do not expect the way the did with apted and becuse of the roger michelle talks.

Tarantino's a cool director. Terrible choice for Bond, though - he'd make a Bond film that was a Tarantino-film first and foremost, and Bond should also be avoiding any directors with very recognizeable styles. He wouldn't put up with the producers, anyhow. But it's all moot, DGA rules keep him from being allowed to do it.

What EON needs to look for right now are directors who are a little above the typical Glen/Spottiswoode/Apted type and go for directors who are, well, better than mediocre. After Campbell's work on CASINO ROYALE, that's absolutely essential. My candidates:

Stephen Frears - The man's a more-than-solid director and has been involved with Bond before (he was signed to the JINX project).

Matthew Vaughn - EON looked at him for CASINO ROYALE. Maybe now's the time to pick him up.

Philip Noyce - He knows how to direct a good thriller. Get him a good DP and we're set.

I'm not so sure. He'd do something more character-based, but I can't see it continuing the style of CASINO ROYALE. And that's what we need right now. We need a continuation, not a new vision.

Matthew Vaughn, Phillip Noyce and Chris Nolan are all very good suggestions, IMO. and if I'm correct, Nolan IS interested in directing Bond.

Nolan is interested, but one wonders whether he'd be willing to sacrifice the amount of creative control that the Bond producers demand.

yeah, and it's the same with Tarantino. though honestly I don't think it'd be that big an issue with Nolan, depending, obviously, on what his view for Bond is.

he's my second choice right now. that he managed to get such an amazing performance and emotion from a man whose face is completely covered by a mask is all the proof I need that he can handle character. and, well, V's last stand is considered by many as one of the best action scenes of last year. (the parkour chase in CR was by far my personal favourite)

But when would Nolan have the time to do it. He already has said he's directing the movie version of the Prisoner after The Dark Knight. But I really would like to see Vaughn get a crack at it.

What about Luc Besson? Leon is a very well good flick. But Mattew Vaugh would be a great choice to.

Besson said he's not going to direct any other movie than the two sequels to Arthur and the Minimoys. And if he really wanted to do something Bond-ish, well I've given him the proposal for my movie just last week.
