Why all the hate over the flag shot?

Spider-Man's suit is red and blue, he protects the greatest city in America, they showed a flag, get over it.

The flag was unnecessary, especially since not every Spidey fan is American.
It seemed so out of place, but I couldn't care less for it. Have Captain America pop up behind him saying "This is for Thomas Jefferson!" for all I care.

And for this statement...I say **** you, :)

it pisses me off when people say they laughed at it or thought it was cheesy
they have no effin clue what the flag stands for. Even if they aren't from America, the ideals the flag stands for are universal.

All people do nowadays is associate America with george bush's war of terror on the desert people.

why not have some hope in the world? jeesh, plus think of how many young people are viewing the film!

Laugh Out Loud

A lot of you are really unbearable right now with this. Seriously. Sure, this film was far from perfect. I liked it. I hated it, too. There were several plot holes, dumb parts, but also a lot of awesome parts.

Shall we argue about that? The plot holes? Even the look of Venom for crying out loud isn't as pointless as showing patriotism in a film.

Is it the fact that we are arguing about the flag in a shot on film that has me irritated? No. It's the fact that these are the same "Hypsters" that were up in arms last summer when Bryan Singer's Superman Returns left "The American Way" out of Superman's "slogan".

"Why did he take this out!" Everyone cried just months ago. You all got mad and may have had a reason. So the question is how can just as many people be mad about the exact opposite?

This just makes me a little mad because of the fickleness of fans. If this was cheesy, then what was Spider-man landing on a flagpole at the end of 2002's Spider-man? Was it more acceptable 'cause it was mere months after September 11th, 2001? I'm no Bush fan or a big time patriot, but Spider-man still is an American icon and hero and a flag in a movie is the least of people's worries.

I guess this is complete proof that you can't please everyone- either too much patriotism or not enough...it's funny.

I never even gave a second thought to that shot until I was forced to think about it by reading this thread. It's called "iconic imagery' - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but in this case, it's certainly nothing to get offended over...unless you're just offended by the American flag in general. If you are, my advice is DO NOT GO SEE THE CAPTAIN AMERICA FILM WHEN IT COMES OUT! YOU CERTAINLY WON'T LIKE THAT ONE! In fact, if you have a problem with the shot because it is the American flag, you should probably wait until until a movie about a hero from a country whose flag DOESN'T offend you comes out and then they can show a shot of him/her posing heroically in front of that flag. Geez, it amazes me what people will find to gripe about these days. An amusing side note, I recall seeing the Mexican trailer for SM3 and they somehow removed the flag in that shot! Amazing!

I'm worried to think what the flag scene haters would do with a Captain America movie :whatever:

^Implode and cease to exist. But then again they would probably say there wasn't enough nostalgic patriotism to a superhero whose blood runs red, white, and blue.

I think is different, I tought the Flag shoot in SM3 was cheesy

but i can´t wait to see Captain America in the big screen, and I´m sure there will be a lot of stars and stripes... But It is Captain AMERICA

is like coming to Colombia and not drink coffee:woot:

they will complain and say that there needs to be a captain rican movie and it will all be ok. lol jk

It was really lame.

I see the character of Spiderman viewed as a threat (a weapon of mass destruction) as other rogue meta humans are by the American gov't in the comics.

i really don't understand this. god forbid there be any patriotism anymore. i keep reading posts where people "cringe/roll there eyes" at this shot. what exactly is the problem? is it because it's the cool thing to hate America? is it because you don't think Spider-Man should be associated with America? i'm not patriotic, but i don't see why people would show disdain for this shot. i don't want this to into a political thread, although i'm sure it will. either way i'm glad Raimi included the shot.

its TOO kiss-up and pc to everyone

Well now that the American flag and anything "American" are now offensive icons, he'll be renamed Captain AllThatStuff

The gratuitous flag shot in SM3 and Captain America have nothing to do with eachother.

It was just really forced and looked ridiculous
They showed that flag way longer than they should've.

Wow, I find it hard to believe that an American flag would be featured somewhere in america's biggest city and that Spider-man would just happend to pass one of those obscure american flags. I mean how ridiculous is THAT!? Not to mention that they have him in front of it for a WHOLE half second, I mean come on that half second could have been used on important character development, instead of American patriotism shoved DOWN OUR THROATS!!

vegeta21 be careful, your sarcasm is so close to what the real whiners are saying, some may mistake it for real opinion.

Lord knows it seems like everyone took a nightclass in filmmaking for beginners and learned how important "Character development" is

Patriotism is considered "corny" and "cheesy" in this day and age. The flag would have been more acceptable at a further distance. . . .I mean come on people, are you actually listening to yourselves? Excuse Sam Raimi that patriotism isn't hip these days, lol:confused:

i personally didnt find it that cheesy, i could see how some would though, but i didnt, and i honestly love it.

i love my country even with all its flaws, and i love my hero even with all of his flaws

well it was neat the first time around, back in Spider-Man 1.
we don't need that **** again.

It's pretty sad that loving ones own country is considered as a fad.

The easiest answer for the "hate" over the american flag shot is very simple

Frankly when Spiderman originally came out the summer following 9-11, the flag instiled a very patriotic feeling and emotionally connection with the city at the time. But like any song that gets play 100 times on the radio it gets old and lesssens the original greta meaning. Thats all its not that people hate it its that people had stronger connection with it the first time, and its gotten old, so to speak.
