WHY AREN'T THERE ANYMORE 'BIBLICAL' movies being made?

Over the years there have been re-makes upon re-makes of old movies; except for the biblical ones (Jesus flicks excluded). I'm really surprised there has never been a re-make of The Ten Commandments or such...then there are other great stories in the Bible that would make great movies:

Samson
The Book of Job
King David
The Walls of Jerico

.............to name but a few.

Is Hollywood scared to touch these stories? There's definitely a market for it. The Passion of The Christ proved that.

Your thoughts.....

Good question. Back in the "golden age" of cinema, Biblical tales were pretty large draws; EVERYONE knows The Ten Commandments. But America back then was more religious-centered then it is today. But like it was mentioned, Passion of the Christ proves that religious movies WILL put people in the seats; its just that these days, its hard to market something like that without becoming a controversy. Its sad, really.

I would love to see a bible-based movie made in this day and age. The old testament alone is so full of love and epic wars, (in)fidelity, betrayel, murder, romance, sacrifice, etc; any book of the bible could very easily be converted into a screenplay, and have something for everyone.

David Vs Golliath?

Samson, Noah's Ark, Adam And Eve

So many stories, that could be huge blockbuster movies.

So many ideas, yet no one bothers.

Do they show the part where David sets up his buddy to die in battle because he's boinking his wife?

Those filthy heathen monkey atheists would just boycott it. :o

I'm an atheist, I've got no interest in seeing bible stories, no matter how important christians might think it is. Just like I didn't see Passion Of The Christ.

thats cool and all, but I'm curious: Is your lack of interest just borne from your lack of faith?

Reason I ask is cause if thats the case, you'd be really missing out on some great stories; the religious nature of them completely excluded. It'd be kind of like the obnoxious "super religious" who refuse to watch anything that doesn't have Kirk Cameron in it.

And while it had its critics for the gore (really? same people who love flicks like Halloween are saying its too much? but i digress....), Passion of the Christ was a work of art; the cinematography, production quality was astounding.

My old religious friends made me watch Passion of the Christ with them once. I thought it was alright. I wouldn't watch it again, but I'm glad I saw it. Personally I think it is a far cry from a "work of art".

I don't think Batman is real, I still saw The Dark Knight.

Cool. But the old testament stories are shared by both Muslims and Jewish teachings alike, not just Christians; it's the new Testament that seperates the faiths.

Anyhow, the Passion was somewhat of a preachy movie as it is the core of the Christina faith. A King David/King Solomon movie is simply a rags to riches type story, of how a simple boy slays a giant (Goliath) and becomes a great King through many battles, and the flight and wisdom of his son. I don't see that as controversial at all. In fact it has all the things that alot of hollywood blockbusters have in them; action; lust & sex.....i can't see them shying away from this.

An Adam and Eve/Abel and Cane through to the tower of Babel events- could be a pretty ballsy and kickass movie if executed right.

Whether we believe them or not, they're still just stories. There's just so many good tales in the bible that can be made into movies that don't have to come off as being religious , but just good movies.....

No, I liked The 10 Commandments (because of Heston and King Vidor) and Ben Hur (though that's more of an epic set concurrent with events in the bible). A good story's a good story I agree, but I don't believe in god so I don't imbue them with the significance a christian would. Like one time I watched The 10 Commandments at a friend's house and he kept looking over at me thinking that suddenly during the film I would start believing in god or something.

I'm not religious at all but I took bible literature in my final year of high school to check out some of the stories from the Old Testament (the Torah basically).

Some of the stories are bat ***** crazy and would make great movies actually. Like any fairy tale or just flat out entertaining stories, the bible is filled with them (some are lackluster as heck though).

The story of Samson would make for such a kick ass movie with the right director. Simply saying you won't watch or aren't interested in any of these stories simply because of the religious nature tied to the text is equally asinine to those who worship a piece of text.

Whatever your beliefs or non beliefs are regarding Judeo-Christian text a lot of the stories are entertaining and a good exploration of human thought and perception of whats right/wrong.

I know it would be controversial but a movie from Gods perspective throughout many of these stories would be great. For anyone who's read the Old Testament with an objective lens you'd know how much of a schizoid and troubled character he/she/it is.

Thats fine, thats your own personal choice. Not everyone has to see every movie. And Passion of the christ did quite well at the box office without you seeing it.

I enjoyed Passion of the Christ through and through. Great movie.

This is coming from a complete non believer too. Faith isn't necessary to appreciate a well knitted film.

It didn't need me? Darn.

I did like hearing coworkers and such talking about how amazing and life changing it was though.

Passion of the Christ was a piece of **** snuff film.

Now the Ten Commandments... that was a great movie. If I had to choose some bible stories, I'd go with

Abraham
Job
Daniel

Maybe a story from Judas' point of view. One where he was a good guy.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

Considering a lot of Biblical stories are based on historical events (obviously not Adam and Eve and Noah), you could appreciate them from a secular point of view as well.

The funny thing is, I imagine a lot of religious people wouldn't go see the movies, as they'd be pretty bloody and have a lot of adult content.

They made that Nativity movie a little while ago.

But honestly, a religious movie I would love to see is Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's childhood pal.

That book is frigging hilarious! One of my favorite novels.

iALWAYS WANT TO SEE A NOAH OR DAVID AND .gOLAITH.I THINK NORH ARK COULD WORK. JUST LOOK AT EVEN ALMIGHTY.

I agree. And I think studios are just too afraid to take the risk and I dont know why. So much potential like others have said. You don't have to be a christian to enjoy The ten commandments...that silly. If there was a great movie on some of the stories of greek mythology (another subject hollywood should take a look into) I'd check it out in a heart beat...do I beleive in Zeus? Hell no.

I'd like to see the book of Genesis. Even if they dont want to do that they can adapt John Milton's paradise lost. It'd be very interesting

People are just real touchy about the bible in general. They automatically feel they're literally being preached to.

After Gibson's film there was a push for more Biblical films. But it just didn't get enough enthusiasm. Personally, I don't care because they play the classics every holiday season and Easter week.
