why did they change the typical look of Abomination for the movie?

Maybe I was more forgiving of the changes to the Abomination because I liked Blonsky in the movie, but it did take me some time to accept the changes. The same thing happened with Blonsky. I wanted him to be a spy and become the Abomination like he did in the comics.
In the end, Blonsky turned out to be a better character and more enjoyable than the Abomination.

Honestly, I kind of prefer the redesign to the comic book design. The Abomination is my favorite villain regardless of what design he has, but for some reason I just really preferred the new look. Even my dad who has never really read Hulk comics or had any knowledge of the Abomination thought he looked somewhat reptilian, and aside from the face he kind of did. I also liked how he wasn't green due to all the fire in the area. That was one of the things I was worried about....both being green & being too hard to distinguish from once they started fighting.

The way I see it, you can explain it by showing whatever gets jacked into Blonsky was tested on or enhanced with reptile DNA. Or something.

I do think it could be cool if he gets mutated further or something. Ross could be experimenting with him or something, and whatever he happens to do to him involves lizards, which causes him to get a more reptilian face.

It didn't bother me, then again I don't read the comicbook and only had a vague memory of his look from a crappy cartoon. I think they changed it because he would have looked too simular to the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

I don't think it would have if they'd modeled him after the design in the HUD game. Then again, that version of the Abomination is damn near 40 ft tall.

Leterrier said the Abomination during daytime would look greener. Only problem is, they never showed him during daytime...

I'm sure they will in the sequels since Roth is contracted to three movies.

Would they even need Roth in any sequels? The Abomination doesn't vacillate back and forth like the Hulk. Unless that's how they'll "defeat" him. Cure him, and then imprison or kill the much more vulnerable Blonsky.

I actually think what they'll end up doing is having him be able to change back & forth at will. I wouldn't mind that, actually, since he's not a tragic character like in the comics.
