Square Enix invites devs to pitch ideas for Gex and other games.
I'm going to bump this thread based on news that released earlier this year. I've been taking a nostalgic stroll down the halls of games I grew up with. Like the OP stated, Gex was a game/franchise I grew up with on the Nintendo 64. Recently, I purchased the trilogy off the PSN and have been enjoying it. While there are definitely issues with the camera and controls, the game still manages to hold up 17 years later.
Looking at video game characters nowadays, it's very hard for any to be distinctive. As many know, publishers are only willing to put money into safe stock. Properties and such that are sure to guarantee a return. The level of creativity is vastly diminished because of this business tactic. It's up to crowd funded projects now to push video games in a direction that isn't the standard "rinse and repeat".
I personally think Gex needs to return back to the lime light. Especially after this 17 year long hiatus the character has practically been on. There is just too much untapped potential to not harness. Gex was all about being relative to the time/pop culture laced. I can only imagine what fun a studio could have nowadays with todays pop culture. Back then, television and movies were the big medium...that's kind of changed with todays society. With the internet now evolved to it's current state, practically anything is available at our finger tips.
I'm not sure how well this would go over with the diehard fans but, I feel like Gex should upgrade from television and go to the internet. I think it allows developers/designers a lot more freedom. Besides, it's relevant to the times of today. Hardly anyone really watches television anymore. Maybe I'm ignorant to make that claim but, I feel like everyone just gets their shows from streaming services, the internet, premium channels, etc etc. Could you imagine Rez trying to take over the internet? Gex being thrown in a search engine type lobby where data and requests are being hurled around.
I think Gex going into a youtube setting would be very, very funny. Also having him make appearances in something like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad...there is just a lot of potential to be had with this property. Above all though, it would be a breath of fresh air; something the industry definitely needs.
