I don`t quite understand it. You hear so many americans saying "we HAVE to support the president" and i think fair enough if they are doing good things but people were still saying that when Bush was making some of his biggest mistakes.
The U.S seems, like france before them, to have shaken off the shackles of monarchy only to create a new king under a different name. Many americans (Not all) seem to believe that their leader deserves blind loyalty. Loyalty i understand, i am loyal to country and most of the time i feel i can put my faith in the PM or the queen but I refuse to blindly support my country if we commit heinous acts, I would refuse to support the prime minister or the queen if they acted against the beliefs of my nation.
It seems a sizable group of american society have elevated their leader to a point of almost being like a mythical figure. When someone is a candidate for election mud can be slung at them when they become president they are free from criticism. I mean it took quite a bit before american public opinion turned on Bush and he was making mistakes and bad decisions like it was going out of fashion.
Who else seems mystified by this cult of personality around the presidential office?
