Why have some Americans grown to treat their president like a god amongst mortals?

I don`t quite understand it. You hear so many americans saying "we HAVE to support the president" and i think fair enough if they are doing good things but people were still saying that when Bush was making some of his biggest mistakes.

The U.S seems, like france before them, to have shaken off the shackles of monarchy only to create a new king under a different name. Many americans (Not all) seem to believe that their leader deserves blind loyalty. Loyalty i understand, i am loyal to country and most of the time i feel i can put my faith in the PM or the queen but I refuse to blindly support my country if we commit heinous acts, I would refuse to support the prime minister or the queen if they acted against the beliefs of my nation.

It seems a sizable group of american society have elevated their leader to a point of almost being like a mythical figure. When someone is a candidate for election mud can be slung at them when they become president they are free from criticism. I mean it took quite a bit before american public opinion turned on Bush and he was making mistakes and bad decisions like it was going out of fashion.

Who else seems mystified by this cult of personality around the presidential office?

You and a bunch of pissed off Republicans.

Politics is such a polarizing subject.

I myself am a little mystefied of the blind faith or loyalty towards Obama...
I cant explain it.

I expect Obama to just be like any other president. I just hope he does real well.

I wasn`t referring to Obama. I was referring to the way americans treat any president who gets elected.

But we don't blindly follow anyone when they are elected at all. People can and will say lots of nasty things in the following weeks.

I have only seen a few people on the SHH complain about people making fun of Obama after his election. And that was more of a complain later, tonight we should celebrate type thing.

Heck even McCain stopped tossing mud for the night.

I was more referring to how people treated clinton, bush and other previous presidents. Although there was criticism, many just blindy followed whoever was in charge because they were president.

Until it became unpopular to do so. What do you want? People are sheep. Always have been, always will be.

I don't understand where he's getting at. What does he mean by blindly following? I mean, the dude is there, most of the time, we have no choice but to wait the guy's term out.

I think he is refering to stuff like "Stand by our President" and "We can't criticize the President in a time of war".

It's funny to watch Republicans, who immortalized the very meak George W. Bush, now scoff at Barack Obama.

That's what gets my goat. People are not only sheep, but they're hypocrites as well.

Your'e my internet Jesus Malice. Save me from not being excited about a new President that may possibly bring some change into politics and help a lot of people and to be like you, sitting there, waiting for him to fail so you can say I told you so. Be my savior.

This true. Stan is a hack....but damn it if he couldn't make great characters.

Stan Lee apparently could write Spider-Man very well, take credit for writing Fantastic Four very well, and not a whole lot else in that department.
