Why have some Americans grown to treat their president like a god amongst mortals?

I think it really grew over this past Bush presidency, really.

I think it's what happens when someone rules with fear.

Ultimately, people...on the right, most commonly, were scared out of they're skulls and needed to believe in something that keeps the monsters from going bump in the night. And, because Bush's administration ultimately treated us, the American people, like scared little children for almost 8 years...telling us scary scary stories but telling us they're the only ones that can protect us...people feel the need to defend them the extreme.

There seems to be a misplacement of wordings too....because being patriotic does not mean blindly following the leader. Patriotism is not the same as loyality. May seem like it is, but it's not.

I think in the end...most people simply think being Patriotic is being loyal. Never question the leader, because then your not being loyal and ergo your not being a patriot. And, by mandate of the Bush administration...if you're not with us, you're against us.

I don`t quite understand it. You hear so many americans saying "we HAVE to support the president" and i think fair enough if they are doing good things but people were still saying that when Bush was making some of his biggest mistakes.

The U.S seems, like france before them, to have shaken off the shackles of monarchy only to create a new king under a different name. Many americans (Not all) seem to believe that their leader deserves blind loyalty. Loyalty i understand, i am loyal to country and most of the time i feel i can put my faith in the PM or the queen but I refuse to blindly support my country if we commit heinous acts, I would refuse to support the prime minister or the queen if they acted against the beliefs of my nation.

It seems a sizable group of american society have elevated their leader to a point of almost being like a mythical figure. When someone is a candidate for election mud can be slung at them when they become president they are free from criticism. I mean it took quite a bit before american public opinion turned on Bush and he was making mistakes and bad decisions like it was going out of fashion.

Who else seems mystified by this cult of personality around the presidential office?

Well ask yourself..you still have a Queen.............in other words this is a human condition not a country condition. Yeah you are right in some context, some people on this planet judge a person on their status in society, and not on their actions. Since the majority of us will never really know our leaders that's the only way to judge. To put it bluntly there are a lot of morons on this planet......

People who were saying that in reference to Bush, generally didn't think that he was making any big mistakes.

Those who are saying the same about Obama, are basically making an appeal to bipartisanship. It's been a long campaign. Some people are tired of arguments, and just want to see some real leadership in action.

Other than that, yes, of course the president is a celebrity. He plays the key role in politics, period. It's no wonder that whoever holds that position will be viewed as a larger-than-life figure.

Politics is such a polarizing subject.

I myself am a little mystefied of the blind faith or loyalty towards Obama...
I cant explain it.

Been lead for 8yrs by George Bush Jr will do that to a nation.

Obama loyalists are probably a good thing, really. I feel like Obama will definitely call upon people to serve and when he does there will be many willing to sacrifice for him.

It's funny to watch Republicans, who immortalized the very meak George W. Bush, now scoff at Barack Obama.

Or Reagan, for that matter.

I think things have been so bad that people are desperate to have someone lead them out of it. Obama said all the right things to make them think that way. I think he's going to be a fairly average president, but that's such a hell of a lot better than what we've had the past 8 years that even that is something to look forward to.

But I think if he inspires people to get involved in their communities and do more to make things better, that's a great thing to have happen. Time will tell.

I wonder if more human lives will be sacrificed under Obama than under Bush.

Because Bush has quite the body count under his term.
