I think it really grew over this past Bush presidency, really.
I think it's what happens when someone rules with fear.
Ultimately, people...on the right, most commonly, were scared out of they're skulls and needed to believe in something that keeps the monsters from going bump in the night. And, because Bush's administration ultimately treated us, the American people, like scared little children for almost 8 years...telling us scary scary stories but telling us they're the only ones that can protect us...people feel the need to defend them the extreme.
There seems to be a misplacement of wordings too....because being patriotic does not mean blindly following the leader. Patriotism is not the same as loyality. May seem like it is, but it's not.
I think in the end...most people simply think being Patriotic is being loyal. Never question the leader, because then your not being loyal and ergo your not being a patriot. And, by mandate of the Bush administration...if you're not with us, you're against us.
