Everyone who frequents this site seems to LOVE Christopher Nolan (many have even written essays on him (Which i would LOVE to read)) but WHY?

Is it simply becuase he directed Batman begins? Or is there more to it?

Characters??? camera work??? editing techniques??? music??? themes???

Do you like Nolan, and if so why? He isn't the only director to do non-linear stories.

Yes I like Nolan(though he doesnt call anymore), I think its the vests, very vesty kind of guy. He's a good director, and takes his work serious.

whats not to like about everyones favourite british American Director!

I have been trying to get Following but think that he is rather over-rated. I didn't like Insomnia or The Prestige and was just wondering what the big deal with Nolan was. I bet if he didn't do begins he wouldn't be as highly regarded here.

It has nothing to do with non-linear stories (for me at least), and it certainly has nothing to do with Batman Begins - though these are two good reasons for loving him.

The reason I love him most is simple: He gets amazing performances from his actors. He's an "actor's director". That's my #1 reason.

Memento - Guy Pearce's performance, the backwards storytelling, the music, Joey Pants, the ending... Everything here is subperb. Instant classic. Nolan said "You can do things different", and BAM! he did it.

Insomnia - My favorite Nolan film by far. Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Hilary Swank.... It's got great talent, a great story, the simple telling of the story. Easy camera shots, very simple, effective. Very moody. Nolan makes a movie dark even though the whole movie takes place in the day. That's talent.

Batman Begins - This is bias, since Batman is my childhood hero, but once again, one of my favorite movies, great storytelling. He made a Batman movie without it feeling like a Batman movie. It's a man's man movie, not for kids, but for adults. It's like a Batman movie disguised as the ultimate guy movie. "The Godfather" of superhero movies.

The Prestige - My least favorite Nolan film, but I still love it. Very confusing storytelling, very interwoven and frustrating on purpose... It does its job effectively. It's a masterwork of plot twists and surprises. Excellent climax and conclusion. The writing overall is well above most movies today.

He just makes good movies period

His in form at the moment and has made consistanly good movies which is quite hard these days

who was that guy here who wrote a bunch of essays about him, id be interested in reading them

Not on the Hype, he's be just another good director, but would we talk about Burton as much or Raimi?

I've only seen Begins and Prestige, but they were both great. TDK is looking great, so yeah....that's why I like him.

Why Nolan, you ask? 'Cause he's the guy who brought Batman back to life.

Well the guy just makes great movies, pure and simple, you can throw words like camera movement and characterization out there, but many people who make boring ass movies do that, Nolan just makes great entertaining, interesting movies

and he pretty much made the greatest superhero movie ever, and on a Superhero hype board I would assume that makes him a pretty popular guy

BC Nolan is a great filmmaker who makes thought-provoking films which, thanks to the s**ter Hollywood is in, are desperately needed in the industry today.

hes extremely over rated, loves the shaky cam too much, and the only good movie he has made is the prestige, memento used to be amazing, then i re-watched and realized its not all that great. and batman begins will be like george bush, everyone will support it at first, but as time will pass, everyone will realize it just wasn't that great.

I even disagree with this

there are many movies that are thought provoking that suck

Nolan pure and simple makes great entertainment, the fact they are thought provoking adds to the entertainment, it doesn't supplant it

It's always a tough thing to call someones opinion in to question, cause it is there opinion and they have the right to say what they think

but when stupid people say stupid things like the only good Nolan movies is the Prestige (which is probably his worst) it is made very easy

Batman Begins is clearly going to have people who dislike it, cause no superhero movie can please everyone, but you call into question Memento, and Insomnia, and it becomes pretty clear you haven't got a clue what you are talking about

loves the shaky cam too much,

He NEVER uses it without a good reason. The fights in BB had to be confusing because of you know....Batman's tendency to sneak up on a crook and beat him senseless. With that style you can't have overhead shots and stylized fighting like The Matrix.
And The Prestige felt fresh because the camera stayed at eye-level 90% of the time. Everytime someone makes a Victorian flick, you get big swooping crane moves that say ''look at the stes we built!'' A gritty, handheld costume film. Now that's genius.

Films like "2001", "Citizen Kane", "Logan's Run" and "Clockwork Orange" were extremely though provoking and yet aren't that entertaining in the way I think you're suggesting...

So you're telling me that those films suck?

Only an ignorant teenager with a short attention span would say something to this effect...

Shaky cam was a good way to hide "Teh Puffy Suit" too:ninja:

since when?

I'd have to agree...in spite of what it did for the Batman franchise, I'd hardly call "Batman Begins" the greatest comic book/super hero film ever.

That title belongs to "Superman: The Movie" IMHO :o
