Why Nolan??

I've seen Citizen Kane more than SM3.

Brazil, The Wages of Fear, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Double Indemnity...I've seen all of these more than SM3.

And I don't recall ever saying outside forces formulate my opinions for films.

SM3 is not a good film. It's entertaining...it's certainly loud and obnoxious...but that doesn't make it good.

I'm not a tool...my apprecitation of movies is just not as juvenile as yours.

Trying to tell some teenagers that good movies were made before 1990 is often like pulling teeth. I'm 22 and it's odd how teenagers have an astounding lack of perspective. I thought this way when I was a teenager a few years back. I can't really blame them though, self-centeredness is a part of the puberty process.

If you do think Citizen Kane is the best movie ever, and can't man up to the fact you think SM3 is good, so you say its entertaining but bad, you sir are a tool

Then, I'm a tool too. Citizen Kane brought innovative story telling, make up effects, and mind blowing camera work to the table. What we as viewers now take for granted is a staple in a movie had to happen for the first time at some time. And the first time it happened was during Citizen Kane. Kane also has the best ending in movie history. And, on top of all that, I don't think Spider-Man 3 was good. It was god-awful. So, as I said-or rather as you said-I am a tool. :)

Yeah...I suppose...most unfortunate...

Everyone who frequents this site seems to LOVE Christopher Nolan (many have even written essays on him (Which i would LOVE to read)) but WHY?

Is it simply becuase he directed Batman begins? Or is there more to it?

Characters??? camera work??? editing techniques??? music??? themes???

Do you like Nolan, and if so why? He isn't the only director to do non-linear stories.

he's a good story teller, gets the best work out of his actors, and has a very intelligent, interesting way of looking at narratives. that's why i like him, and yes i very much like Batman Begins, but more because it's an example of the qualities listed above

Nolan dosent really have any style though. I mean camera work for example.. what does Nolan do that other directors don't. does he have any trade marks? NO. He is pretty average and nothing that spectacular in the technical side of things. At least Raimi and Burton haev there own style.

Extreme close ups with a shaky hand held camera on his action sequences. Oh wait, Jan De Bont did that first. No, Nolan doesn't do anything, not even the bad things, that other directors don't.

he creates a similar ant-septic, third party kind of passive voice tone in his movies. very kubrickian actually.

It's almost like he doesn't exist. It seems like good, talented people were lighting and filming the scenes and good actors read the script and delivered their lines. Like there was no one there to talk to them about why they movie mattered. It's like he's a director without a soul.

I enjoyed X3 and Spiderman 3, but I wouldn't be so naive as to call them 'good films' just because they had a lot of s**t exploding and what have you...

If a film is entertaining...GASP...it's called an 'entertaining film'

but that hardly means it's a 'good' one...

Got to agree with you there, CFE. I mean, I find Aliens and Predators fighting and blowing things up as entertaining as the next guy, but I'm not exactly going to rank it as a good film because I like the 'splosions. Thats more of a job for the general movie-going audience. :ninja:

People also need to be able to differentiate between their favorite film and the best film. I hate it when I see things like, "Tommy Boy is the best movie ever!!!!!" Although, it does make me laugh a little to read posts like that.

lol, the one I always hear is Star Wars.

Exactly he has NO style. anyone, ANYONE could make his films. To Nolan camera work, use of music, and editing don't matter.

Really? I always hear "Jedi" or "Empire". I never hear anyone say the original, which is sad because the original Star Wars is not only a great film, but is the superior film in the franchise.

Well, it's always a variation, I just meant any Star Wars film in general.

then so be it

I don't discriminate against old movies

Rope, is effing stellar, as are most hitchcock movies, Bullet, Dawn of the Dead, Mean Streets, Jeremiah Johnson, the Magnificent Seven they are some of my favorite movies not to mention Star Wars, where all made 10 years before I was born (I'm 20 by the way)

along those lines Batman Begins, Children of Men, Memento, Pirates 1, Kill Bill, Swingers, Chasing Amy and I heart huckabees are also some of my favorite movies and those have all been made in the last 10 years

I don't have a preference one way or the other too any movies let alone newer ones versus older, the only preference I have is it is entertaining, if a movie entertains me, then I consider it good. There are many types of entertainment, National Treasure, Blades of Glory, Evil Dead, Spider-man, Memento, Pulp Fiction, North by Northwest, Miller's Crossing are all forms of entertainment, I consider all at worst good solid movie

I think you are plain kidding yourself if you think a movie that entertains you can still be a bad movie, on what grounds is it a bad movie then?

its the same ridiculous argument that you can have your favorite movie ever and a movie you think is the best movie ever

If I have to explain to you the difference between someone's favorite movie (let's say Talledega Nights) and a wonderfully made movie (The Godfather) then you will be too ignorant to comprehend my argument.

there is no argument, it is a contradiction to say there are movies out there better than the movie that you think its best

See? This is what I am talking about. Too ignorant to realize the difference between favorite and best.

Wow, if Nolan has no style, then I wonder just how many directors out there you think have any style.

I love non Bat Nolan movies, he gets best results from the actors he casts.

EDIT: well maybe Holmes...

So is this one of those "*insert name* is popular, so I must BASH HIM/HER/IT!" threads?

close its

*insert name* is popular, so I must BASH HIM/HER/IT! because he music in their movies sucks and they have no style

EDIT: this post is a joke

I think Nolan is pretty good, but he's limiting himself with his own "style."

Every one of his films must have a plot tiwst, must be told out of order; non linear, etc.
