Wii outselling PS3 in Japan five-to-one

April's figures showed the Wii was outselling the PlayStation 3 4-to-1 in Japan, and last month the gap widened even further, with the cheaper Nintendo console now 5-to-1 ahead, reports Bloomberg.

Bloomberg, quoting figures from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain Inc, revealed that 251,794 Wiis had been sold in Japan in May, five times as many units as the PS3. Microsoft's Xbox 360 lagged even further behind, with 11,082 units changing hands last month. Exact figures were not given for PS3 sales, but they are likely to be in the region of 50,000.

The story was much the same in the battle of the handhelds, with the Nintendo DS having sold 620,670 to the PlayStation Portable's 123,673 during May.

Not surprising considering how cheap the Wii is compared to the Playstation 3 and the demand for the Wii is still really high.

I was one of the only people on the forum defending the Wii when it was unveiled.

Of course it's outselling it and it deserves to outsell it, the PS3 is overpriced, has no games that appeal to the Japanese market (pretty much) and its big games aren't coming for a while, there hasn't been any Japanese centric game except for Gundam Muso and that was like the only game aside from genji 2 (not exactly a top shelf game).

Well Armored Core and Ridge Racer did ok as launch titles, but still.

Gundam whatever target in sight was horrible apparently.

Meanwhile the Wii is a really low price, appeals directly to the Japanese market and has a ton of games that are popular in japan riding on it.

Then you certainly missed something because the GCN had nowhere near the developer support as the wii ALREADY has, not to mention how much more the wii has in the pipeline.

The Xbox360 only sold in Japan when Blue Dragon released there. They probably won't sell again until Lost Odyssey releases. Or Ninja Gaiden 2.

It's selling on hype. People buy into the hype and end up with a system with 3 good games max, a bunch of lazy ports and cobwebs all over the place.

That's because the Japanese are so f**king stuck up that they're not impressed by anything that isn't made in Japan. If they want to keep playing their crappy PS3s, then so be it. More 360s for everyone else.

When one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world blows their hard earned Yen on a sub par console that's just an overgrown Wii in reality it brings a tear to my eye. But to be fair the PS3 is overpriced.

The Japanese have no sense of diversity when it comes to games. The DS is proof of that, they either like Final Fantasy style rpg's or dumb ass games like wii play.
