What do you think?

19 years in the making will this rebirth of the Superman franchise be as critically well recieved by fans alike as the new Batman film was?

It's going to be much better, much more exciting. Since I fell asleep during Batman Begins I am probably not the one to ask though.

Batman fans and many critics liked BB, but the general public certainly didn't go ape over it. Sure it did well, but it wasn't like Spider-Man or Superman 78'. I think Superman Returns will energize the regular filmgoer and just people in general. I don't know one person who loved BB that wasn't a Batman fan. It just didn't impress the average filmgoer.

Interesting, I'm a hardcore Spidey fan as you might tell, but the Spidey films left me wanting amore faithfull/less holywood shmaltzy transition to the big screen.

For me BB blows away every other superhero flick ever, obviously Superman is the polar opposite of Bats I just wonder if the new Supes movie will make it to the same level of greatness that BB exists in.

Hmmm, wonder what the BB boards would make of the same topic.

Different kinds of movies, when you think about it. As far as quality of film, yes. As far as respective stories, for the characters involved, yes. And as far as kicking off new franchises, yes. But they aren't really specifically comparable.

I am a hardcore Spidey fan as well. I have loved him since I was 3. I have the complete opposite opinion. As I loved the films and they satisfied me, especially SM2.

I just can't see how anyone could think Batman Begins is the best Superhero film. I actually think that Batman Forever is better, at least I wasn't bored watching Batman Forever. The climax was neverending. I can't think of one moment of the film I actually liked.

Back to the point, if Supes is not as good as BB to me, I'm in big trouble.

However, I can respect your opinion simply because you said "for me". I just hate when people state their opinion as fact. It seems many of the BB fans do just that. It seems too many of the BB lovers have this deluded opinion that everyone feels it's the best comic book film.

Personally, I don't think will be as good. I think, I hope, it will be in the top 5, even 3 for me. But the thing that made BB so good, and so well accepted is that it was not only a good movie, but it was always very faithful to the character, and nearly all the characters in the film. SR however, obviously is going more to match STM than the current comics, and I think that will be the thing that keeps SR from being the best. For me, at least.

EDIT: DP.

Heh. DP.

You said DP.:)

As good as BB? BB is to Batman what StM was to Superman. So then for SR to be better than BB it would have to be better than StM, and clearly that isn't going to happen.

SR = B89, Villain and effects carry the show.

That's actually...a very good comparison. The BB/STM one, at least.

I like how from what trailers I have seen Brandon plays his Clark as Reeves did, and Spacey as Hackman portrayed Luthor.
I think it's quite clear that this film will be a tribute to the old films, and that's no bad thing. I love them but I am aware alot of fans wanting something more post crisis based than what we are getting.

I am sure SR will be a great film and very uplifting, thats what made the old films so great in my eyes,- that they lifted your spirits.
So if the film does that then it will be a success.
It's hard for me to see ow it will be as good as BB though, that film totally kicked my little fanboy ass.

i don't think Superman Returns will be as dramatic as Batman Begins
but because it is much heavier emphasis on superhuman CGI special effects and likely a faster pace than BB, i very much expect it to be a
much bigger draw at the box office than Batman Begins .

:supes:

I dont think this two movies are comparable. Much like the two characters, they will opposite to each other in terms of tone, theme and approach. SR is going to be more like a spidey movie with comedic, moments and puns appearing in the film. I regard spiderman 2 as the best comicbook movie and i m bat fan. In terms of quality........SR wont beat BB (bale or routh) but i m really excited to see SR right now! REALLY EXCITED!!!!!!!!!

What is more exicting and has more potentianl storywise:

Batman Begins - An origin story that it known by alot of people, though a new twist to it.

Superman Returns - After being gone for several years Superman Returns to a world that doesnt need him anymore and hey also his girlfriend has a KID!!

I think it will be on the level of Begins. A tie.

Why?

- Both movies use the realism concept and arent 'comic-book' movies persay.

- Both movies are very strongly character-driven and focus on the superhero/protagonist's evolution the most.....him trying to find his place in the world

- SR, from an action and romantic point of view, will probably be more memorable than Batman Begins.

- Both films are classically inspired for a modern age. I mean there was clearly more influence in Begins from the classic 70s precrisis stuff than the modern post. In essense, both films are still faithful to the character.

You think?
The way I see it BB was a composite of Batman Year one + The long halloween + DKR = Batman Begins.

Also while I'm sure the action in SR will be great I am dubious as to wether there will be anyone action scene in SR that will work as well as the first scene w/ Bats attacking the punks in BB.
That was perfect and Nolan got Batman right on the money.

Hey thats what I originally thought with my limited Bat knowlegde, said that in the Bats forum.....and all the hardcore fans dismissed it and said it was mainly classic precrisis inspired.

im a bat fan, and i gotta say i loved BB, but im very curious and excited to see SR. theyre both different yea. we cant judge the film yet, Why? we havent seen it, i still remmeber when i first saw the very first picture of Batman, i thought it wasnt all that, then i saw the tumbler and i thought man this is gonna bomb big time, cause this batmobile looked like something that came out of Mad Max or something.. but the great turned out great....

now with supes i was totally against the new suit, but as time went by it kinda sunk in, and now i like it.. i think it looks good.. so what im tryin to say is , the film will probably turn out better than what we have seen so far on the trailers.. and I wish SR will top BB as far as story quality or the way they written it, so that HOPEFULLY they can one day make a Supes Bats movie, but if it does turn out like F4, then please dont even touch Bats at all... the other side of the coin is, Batman is suppose to be reality based so that could be a prob too.

Whew, been a while since I posted here. But I had to get in on this...

I think Supes' first appearance can't be compared to Batman's in their respective movies, BB and SR, because you are wanting different emotional reactions from your audience. To me they are not comparable.

As far as faithful, I think Superman Returns is indeed more faithful to the Donner films than the comics, but to be honest with you, most fans feel that the Donner films are more faithful to Superman's actual character than the recent comics and animated series. He's been protrayed as a bully in cartoons and not an icon in comics, so I see that as a plus.

Compared to Batman Begins. It really is hard to beat. Batman Begins had something going for it that neither Spider-man movies or S:TM had....a good plot. Spider-man tends to be shallow on the plot level (villain comes in...goes after Spider-man). STM was more a character story than plot driven one. Batman Begins had both character AND plot.

So I don't know, I can say for sure that I think it will be better than the Spider-man movies and X1 and X3. The comparable test is comparing it to BB, X3, and STM. For me those are the best superhero movies I've ever seen.

We don't have any idea right now, but Kevin Spacey isn't in Batman Begins, and neither is Bryan Singer so i'll DEFINITELY go with the 'ANTI-SINGER'S GAY AGENGA' Batman Begins!!!!!!! Whah-who!!!!!!!!

Cool for me the acid test is how does it hold up to BB, B89, BR, SM1, STM, They are my top five.
Just saw X3 and thought it was crap, X2 was better.
