Okay, so Superman Returns isn't doing the big business that everyone had hoped. Considering the budget, its going to take one hell of a run for the film to break even.

Having said that, I remember back when Batman Begins came out and how disappointed everyone was about their box office take during the first week. Everyone was panicking about how it wasn't a good sign for the movie, etc. and how they were not going to make up their budget.

WB's stance however at the end of all things was that they were content with the final figures and that they were satisfied with the 205 mil domestic take. Part of which has to do with them taking into consideration the bad rep they got from the previous bat-films and their need to "bring the fans back"...I remember one producer decribing it as "trying to talk and old girlfriend to take you back after you've left her." or something similar...

So my question to y'all is: Do you think the WB feels the same way about SR in that they feel they must "woo" people back to see Superman and saving face for the past and aren't so much worried about NOT makin' 300+ domestic? Or do you think they expected SW numbers and will find this to be an utter disappointment?

I mean based on BB, its pretty obvious that WB has changed for the better and decided on "quality over quanity" in regards of their films...so do you think they'll be content if SR made BB numbers (domestically)?

it really depends. you also got to consider that the Superman production has had a long, messy, expensive history, and unfortunately WB is looking to recoup all that losses and the expense of Singer's production in this one movie, so the expectations are kinda unfair for SR, even if it will make $300M.

BB didnt have that kind of baggage, it got off the ground pretty quickly and the expense was pretty modest (was that $150M?), so it doing $200+M wasnt that bad in terms of expectations.

so as i've said it really depends on TPTB at WB, if they think of pretty modest earnings like $200M-- which is roughly what Singer spent on his production only, and they recoup that and thinks a film like this with a talent like Singer is worth another $200M investment for the sequel then we will see part 2 get made. but like the superhero himself, WB seems to be expecting the impossible from SR, to make up for ALL expenses WB spent for it during its messy development stages, which is totally unfair.

Situation is completely different. Like someone mentioned, superman has had one heck of a history to bring it to the screen - directors, actors coming and going; production getting started and ceasing, etc. If returns doesn't make its money back, there is no doubt in my mind WB will pull the plug on the entire franchise. Plus let's not forget begins still made a decent profit - the studio's comments about quality over quantity are just a facade. They are a business. Businesses exist to make money, if they create products that don't make money - they lose.

I want to know exactly what was so costly about the film other than the airplane scene!!!
