This summer I'm heading up to San Francisco for a couple of weeks and while looking for things to do the Winchester Mystery House caught my eye. Has any one gone there and is it worth it?

Fine, I'll ask.

What is the Winchester Mystery House?

Fine, I'll ask.

What's San Francisco?

I've always wanted to go. Never got the chance though.

But no, I've never been there.

I pretty sure that Picard emoticon is getting close to being over used.

For those of you who genuinely want to know, the Winchester Mystery House is a huge freaking Victorian mansion here in the SF Bay. It's not haunted (well, maybe it is), but it's incredibly creepy and weird. Stairs that lead nowhere, odd design motifs, and the sheer size of it (I think only one woman lived there, and it has over 100 rooms).

I've always wanted to go, but I've never been.

Fine, I'll ask.

What's San Francisco?
Home of the X-Men, Wise. Home of the X-Men.

The house was constructed under the direction of the wife of gun magnate William Winchester.

For 38 straight years, Sarah had around-the-clock construction on the house. Until she died, she made sure the house was always being added to because she believed it to be haunted by the ghosts of all those killed by Winchester guns, and that only the construction would appease them.

Since there was no master plan, the house is full of staircases that go nowhere, doors that open to walls, rooms off odd shapes and sizes, and even at least one door on an upper floor that opens to nothing but a drop to the ground below. It's said to be haunted, and it's considered to be a creepy and fun place to explore.

"Oh HERE are the coffee mugs".

Pretty sure this is the house featured in SWAMP THING. Cooooooool.

Although "The Winchester Mystery House" is a terrible name.

this thread is why the hype blows now. painful.

anyway, the winchester mystery house is a nice diversion but it's nothing special, especially with all the other attractions in sf. you'll probably have time to hit up everything in a couple weeks so i guess a trip to the place wouldn't be a bad idea though.

Just make sure you don't go looking for the house in San Francisco, because it's not there. It's in San Jose.

:D

Anyways, the house itself is pretty interesting. I haven't been there since I was a little kid, when my mom used to work there as a tour guide. But it is a pretty cool house, and yes, rather creepy.

Sarah Winchester was an odd woman.

It's rather amusing, since the house is literally across the street from a new mall now, I believe. And yes, it's in San Jose, a good 45 minutes from SF if you're driving.

I've been a few times. It's cool the first time, but really only to see the crazy stuff that woman built. Or I dunno, I'm not a huge fan of historical houses. :funny:

when people say sf, they essentially mean the bay area.

I've always been fascinated with the story behind it . I saw a good documentary about it . supposedly one of the top 25 creepiest places in u.s.

Go for the "Grand Estate Tour " package eddie, its worth it!
Went there a few years ago for halloween not going back...do i think its haunted HELL F'N YES. My friends and I saw some strange things while on the tour
