It's really not as interesting as it sounds. Of course I will say that having the opportunity to look the guy straight in the eye and tell him what I think about that story was shockingly therapeutic.
So. This year. I could only make the DC panel on Saturday, but it seems like this year was a lot more boring than last year, and it has to be said that it's mostly because DiDio wasn't there. DiDio is a wild b**** onstage and really does bring the energy to these panels. Ian Sattler tried to bring it, but he's no wild b****. There weren't a lot of jokes, there were almost no announcements, there were only four writers on the panel and one of them (guy who was writing one of the FC Aftermaths) left halfway through. We ended up with just...people talking about their projects. ****, James Robinson went on for like twenty whole ****ing minutes just monologuing about all of the Superman books, even the ones that he doesn't write, except that it's all **** we already knew. In English! And I mean English English, not real American English. Bored. Now.
On that note, Robinson seems like a total *****ebag. You can totally see why this *****ebag writes a *****ebaggy Superman. But hey, let me clarify: he seems like a totally awesome *****ebag. Like, he's hella awesome and intelligent and actually knows what he's talking about. If you called him a *****ebag, he'd just do something totally awesome in your face and then you'd be like "Oh ****, that was awesome." And out of all the panelists, I feel like he's the guy who actually gets the fans the most. More on this later.
Almost everyone is asking multiple questions, and some ****ers are even asking four or five. So I figured I would start off with with something nonchalant and then move in for what I really wanted to ask.
(And ugh, can I just say that I am pissed pissed PISSED that both newsarama and cbr didn't print my second question, because it was the one that I really wanted to ask. All they got was the first part, which was just a throwaway on my part. Mofos! Or maybe they left it out on purpose. Mofos!)
First, I asked Robinson if Captain Atom was still slated to appear in the Superman book, and he said that he was. And that was that. So then I mentioned to the panel that DC seems really intent on assuring everyone that legacy characters still have a place and are respected in the DCU (earlier, someone had of course asked the obligatory "Wally West...still be around?" with the obligatory "Yes, he'll still be around" answer)...on the other hand, I mentioned, despite those assurances, we ended up getting the whole Cassandra Cain situation, and then Connor Hawke gets put into a coma and then has his memory erased (at which point I directed the above exchange at Winick), and Kyle getting thrown about every which way until very recently finding a good direction, and etc etc. Basically I said that even though DC seems to really believe that they're doing good by these guys, it really isn't coming across in the stories. Okay, I said it less eloquently than that, but I think the point got across.
Sattler was good-humored about it, but he gave a fairly obligatory response: keep on reading, there's plans for these people, totally. Really. Which would have been fine enough for an answer, and honestly it helps just to hear someone say it out line.
Robinson surprised me, though. He kindofnotreally cut in to whatever Sattler was saying and told me, in a completely deadpan and unpretentious way, that he does know exactly what I'm talking about, because he honestly feels the exact same affection towards those characters. He completely understands why I'm not buying the company line, but he also encourages me, "no BS," to keep on reading, because there's plans for these people.
And I believe him.
Am I a total schmuck, or am I the biggest schmuck?
And then I went to Pixar's "Up" preview, and that movie looks awesome.
The end!
