Worst/Hated use of CGI in movies

IF there is one thing i hated in Spawn , it was the CG fire and the end sequence where he fights off everyone in hell ( i think). Granted Spawn came out '97 and even to this day , CG fire is still something that is very hard to create.
However i think there is no excuse to film certain scenes with CGI when you know the result is not going to deliver.

I think a lot of the blame for Spawn should go to 'director' who, if memory serves, was actually not a director at all but some unknown Special effects technician or something like that.
When you look at it like that, The trainwreck of Spawn makes more sense. I mean, it never had a chance...

To be accurate... It was the Janitor at the ILM offices who did the effects...

so? :yay:

ILM had to test their cloth dynamics on some movie. they need something to test their software and to push their software writters.

not trying to defend ILM or something. the only reason they could do jurasic part its because of T2. they said this.

Eh i expected better. But hey i'm sure the guys at ILM said to the director "dude , we can't create these shots realistically. Maybe after 10 years but not now " and the director just went "but the director ".

I think the same thing happened when Stephen SOmmers made The Mummy Returns.

Given that the director worked at ILM as a VFX supervisor in the past , i'm surprised that he went for such craptacular shots. I mean he of all people shoul'd've known what could and couldn't have worked with CGI

theres no reason to bash its special effects given the time when it came out cgi was barely even a new thing.

ILM did what they could.. which was still better than any company out their at the time.

Yea what is with the Spawn hate? Back in the day the SFX were pretty decent. His cape looked pretty spectacular when it first came out.

I haven't read all the posts but I'm sure someone else has mentioned this already -it has to be Greedo shooting first.

Mummy Returns (Scorpion King), Revenge of the Sith (the lava planet or whatever the hell you call it), Van Helsing (all of it), Spider-Man 2 (the Dock Ock CGI looked God-awful during certain scenes), I Am Legend (the zombie creatures looked ridiculous)...that's just a few off the top of my head.

if any cgi was MISUSED in spawn it was the climax itself. the cape, although it did not age well, was one of the more forgivable effects in the movie. you see, the cape is one of the most defining charactiristics about spawn and its a characteristic that is larger than life. using real fabric and have it move the way you wanted would have caused more problems than it was worth. now the malebolgia scene was a huge waste of cgi but that entire scene was a waste. the story should have focused more on spawn killing violator and left the 'bolge as a mystery.

the cgi in van helsing was not completely misused, just not that great. the creative ideas were awesome but the execution was lacking.

yeah i agree it should've ended with him killing the violater thingy...

the hell scene was boring and uneccesary anyways

Violater was some very good CG work that ILM did. I was a massive Spawn junkie and when I saw him looking exactly as he did in the books, I was bouncing around the ****ing theatre.

The Blade 2 floodlights fight is horrendous. I've seen more convincing effects in some video games.
Have you ever listened to Del Toros commentary on the DVD? He openly berates the scene...

I have got to listen again to the audio commentary on blade 2 i missed that part:woot:

But despite the awful switch to CGI halfway through Snipes can do a pretty great fight scene its refreashing to see an actor of is calibur being able to do a complete action fight scene, with samurai swords no less.
