Would you want in a Supergirl TV Series?

I was thinking recently about Supergirl and how hard I think it would be to make a really good Supergirl movie. This is only my opinion, but I would want Supergirl to really come into her own as a hero. She has all of Superman's powers and has the potential to be equal to Superman as the greatest hero in the world.
So...what do you think about a Supergirl TV series? Something like Alias, Buffy or Smallville. NBC is coming out next fall with Bionic Woman (which could suck or could be awesome...who knows)
Do you think a Supergirl series would work? What would you want to see?

Bionic Woman is such crap; its doomed to be cancelled.

Supergirl would be hard to do without Superman there; thats the problem. And they can't use Superman and the suit onscreen while the films are going on.

What about an Elseworld style show or movie where Supergirl is the daughter of Superman and Wonder Woman like in DK2? You could set it in a universe that allows her to grow into a great hero. Do you think fanboys would riot since its not Kara Zor El?

Supergirl would work great as a TV series in my opinion. They're evidently thinking of doing a Supergirl spinoff from Smallville. It would play well as a kind of superhero melding of Buffy and Veronica Mars. If they do make the series I hope they put her in the Supergirl costume.

That would be cancelled faster than Birds of Prey was

Supergirl can be done without Superman, just need a good enough writer. If ever a film was done of her, he can't be involved otherwise she is merely a sidekick.

I would love something like Alias. Sydney Bristow was basically a super-hero and there was mystical stuff with Rambaldi. They told awesome stories with great action. I could also dig a melding of Buffy and V-Mars. I think if they did try a spin-off with SG from Smallville, it would most likely suck, but who knows.

Supergirl Lands in Smallville
Source: Indy B July 12, 2007

People magazine has learned that Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort has been cast as Supergirl in The CW's "Smallville" and will start shooting with Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum and Aaron Ashmore next week in Vancouver.

"She's a combination of beauty, intelligence, a certain warmth, and great attitude," Smallville co-creator Al Gough tells the magazine. "We've wanted a character to shake things up. She may be Clark Kent's cousin, but that doesn't mean she's going to be the obedient one!"

Supergirl will be introduced to viewers as Kara, Clark's cousin, who was born on Krypton and has all of Clark's powers plus the ability to fly. Watch for her to spark romance with Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore) as well.

Yeah she goes to my school in Toronto; in my program.

She'll be alright in the role; the question is how bad the writers will bastardize the character.

I have a feeling her purpose on that show is T+A.

If they somehow managed to pull of a superhero blend of Buffy and Veronica Mars, I would watch.

But I have no confidence that that would be effectively pulled off.

I would watch if it was written like above. Supergirl can totally stand on her own without Superman just as Angel can stand on his own without Buffy, and Xena without Hercules. She doesnt need Superman there to save her butt.

But she needs Superman there for her origin; when they tried to do it without him in the Supergirl movie...it was dumb.

They dont really need Superman there, a simple voice over would do well enough.

"My name is Kara Zor-El and a year ago my ship crashlanded on earth. I was found by my cousin Kal-El. You may know him as Superman (or Clark Kent if its Smallville spin-off). I now reside here in Smallville (just for namesake) where im just finding out the hardest thing to do isnt fighting evil but just intergrating into everyday life."

Something to that effect with brief flashbacks during it (they dont even need to show Supes, just an S symbol or Tom)

They wont. It will be another lame teen drama if attempted.

True... I think it could be cool be without Sups, as long as they went the more adult route, more like 'Alias'. But they never would. Especially with this run on 'Smallville', i think any chance of a series for Kara is definately locked into the teen mode.

Boo to that.

Well if she is 19 when she premires on the show, it wont be dealing with highschool so it would probably have more "mature" storytelling. But ofcourse that all depends on the writing team.

Agreed...

No Supergirl. Give me my damn Green Arrow spinoff already!

Any type of Smallville spinoff is a dumb idea; especially with G+M attached to it.

anyhow, just a few replies here.

Supergirl Movie/Show, without Superman: Terrible Idea, that's what I have to say about that. Superman would have to be part of the show, in some way or another. Thinking of supergirl the movie, what a let down it was that Superman didn't show up at the end (The whole reason she left the zone was to find Kal'el, and all she found was poster of him in Lois Lane's cousin's room). Superman would have to atleast be in the first episode of a series, as the person who introduces SG to the world. He could be a semi regular, only showing up once or twice a season. But to do a SG show without Superman at all, is idiotic

Why would he have to show up beyond the Origin Episode? Heck, let Brandon Routh cameo to hand her the costume and send him home to wait for Singerman 2... end of story.

As for a Smallvile Spinoff... I don't think they have the chutzpah to do anything new with the female teen... I think it could be awesome if they had some V-Mars attitude, a Buffy-level scooby gang and Smallville's action/family drama going... especially if they actually made Kara into a character that stands well on her own, something even the current run of the comic book falls just shy of. (Oh, but they're SO CLOSE!)

But I'd watch it regardless... I think a TV show would be cooler for a lot of the supporting/spinoff types rather than a spinoff movie...

But maybe that's just me...
