X-Files 3

I hope they do make it. I Want To Believe was a POS film.

i doubt they would do another xfiles tv show.

While remakes/reboots of Hawaii 5-0 and Charlie's Angels were on the TV schedule this fall plus all the other one this past decade?

Depends on who controls the rights, but I wouldn't put it past Fox or another network (with Fox TV producing) to remake it in the future, as soon as 10 years from now. It would be hard to redo since The X-Files was a show in the right place at the right time. Though you could do monster of the week episodes and then slowly introduce the conspiracy just like The X-Files did.

Fringe has taken on a 21st century approach but wasn't able to attract an audience.

Ya that is a factor shows like xfiles came on at the right time. Today everything is the same old same old cop shows, or doctor shows. Xfiles today on regular networks like fox/abc/nbc/cbs probably wouldnt fair as well as it did in the past. Which how much ratings matter to keep a show afloat from season to season these days. As for a remake i doubt it would happen at all or any time soon. Since i believe chris carter controls the rights to the show still i believe.

Not sure I follow, X-files was not that new of a concept.

It was a crime detective show with supernatural subject matter...there actually had been a few shows like that, i remember that kowalcheck? show from the 70s.

Just a well written show that was well done.

Kolchak was a direct influence, Carter always said it was the show that inspired him to make a tv show along those lines, of a regular detective with supernatural cases. But afaik, it did not have that many episodes, and was way back in the early 70s. I've never seen an ep of the show, so can't judge how close it was, apart from that basic concept.
I do not know of any other tv show that featured the supernatural being investigated by regular cops. Every sci-fi fantsy show I can think of had a sci-fi/fantasy protagonist investigating, like Doc Who.

I think the main problem with an X-Files reboot is that they would be hard pressed to come up with good new ideas at such a rate to begin to compare to the old show in quality. They did 9 seasons that were bursting with ideas, but only just managed to keep the show fresh for it's complete run. Even then a lot of fans will say it had run it's course way before it came to an end, some even citing the fourth season as it's high water mark. I disagree, but I do think it may have gotten as stale as that last movie, and repetitive, if they had kept going with the concept.
They did still have some good ideas in the last few seasons, but the alien conspiracy eps were not as good in that final season at all compared to previous showings, and they were usually a highlight of the show imo. The motw eps still had some good mileage though, you'll always get a writer coming up with a good concept now and again that the show hadn't done before, but, in comparison to the earlier seasons, the hit rate was nowhere as high.

Using that exact same type of set-up again, it would be difficult to come up with new monsters and scenarios that were different than the old one, and maintain that kind of high strike rate. I mean, look at Supernatural, in it's first season especially, but even in later seasons too, it had a lot of eps that were very derivative of the X-Files conceptually.
the danger is in re-treading old ground, I just don't see how you could make it anywhere as good, the show really did feel original and helped bring in a fresh cinematic dynamic to tv. Twin Peaks kickstarted that cinematic aesthetic, but unlike the X-Files for the most part, it did not manage to maintain it's quality. TP was always meant to be a mini-series though, so perhaps it's unfair to compare them in terms of the concept running stale.

But, all those later supernatural/fantasy tv shows came spinning off the X-Files style and success, Buffy, Angel, Dark Skies, the new Doctor Who, Supernatural, Dark Angel, Lost, hell , you could even say that the cable shows like Sopranos, Oz, Dexter , etc etc, all owed a debt to the X-Files, as no shows(apart from Twin Peaks) had carried that dynamic quality of feeling like watching a movie every week. But, unlike the short lived TP, the X-Files showed you could put a lot of work into an ongoing tv show and reap massive rewards, people appreciated the fact it did not feel like any other show they were watching on tv. It did feel like a film, no drop in quality.
Anothert reason it felt so original was that it brought all the underground Fortean Times type conspiracy theories and strange phenomena debate into the mainstream for the first time in a big way. Carter actually put a lot of incidents that were reported as being real, into the show's eps.

this also spun into the movies, you started to see all these alien invasion, abduction, mind control movies popping up all over the place, where before all you had in that vein were a couple of flicks over a long period of time, like Close Encounters, Fire in the sky and Communion.

If Chris Carter holds the rights, there is no way will he want to besmirch the rep of his prize baby with an inferior remake.

It's sad but more than half of 2012 has passed, with no new of a movie or a comic book continuation it seems like this is a classic show that didn't have a proper conclusion, wish they used I want to believe to show the colonisation or to in least give the show a proper conclusion.

I loved the 30 Days of Night crossover. It would make an awesome film.

I Want to Believe was such a wasted opportunity (not to mention a good title). I either wish the second film had been both better and more successful so they could have made a third, or just waited to make the film. There should have been an x-files film for 2012.

I agree!

I agree.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's billing should have been enough to at least guarantee that the costs would be made up.

Thing is...sci-fi and fantasy based shows are making a bit of a comeback. Look how many "monster" based shows are out now...you have Being Human, Grimm, Supernatural...sci-fi is also slowly making a come back. Seems like the right time for an X-Files reboot of the series or a continuation with new characters.

Apparently Fox is still interesting in producing an X-Files 3 to wrap up the franchise, and possibly an X-Files reboot as well... but there's no script. [Source]

AFAIC the reboot was Fringer. Grey aliens was the hot stuff back then, on which unexplored mythology an X Files reboot can work on without being compared to Fringe ?

Eh, there's no reason to reboot the x-files. I just would have like to see the crazy 2012 stuff that was built up on the show for so long.

I'm not really interested in another show. At this point it would just be one of many.

All the actors keep saying it is being worked on and moving forward etc. I just wish it would happen. The last one was okay to me.

For a start they could make the spectators wonder if that week's events are really true by having some of the mysteries end up as being just real world crimes that weren't completelly resolved.

Also, new shows that were inspired by X-Files like Supernatural and Fringe don't have the main atraction of X-Files, which is Aliens. It would also be a good oportunity to reconstruct the mythology and have it perfectly built from day one, instead of going on and on without a direction.

It took some time and money, but I finally tracked down copies of the comics that are the [canon] tenth season. The writing has been interesting:

1. I was hoping they would not rehash the plotline pertaining to Scully's baby, but they have been okay with it.
2. The villains: I am somewhat disappointed they jettisoned the scientific/fantasy tension that was the signature of the show: how are they going to explain teleportation and Mystique like body manipulation (from a little girl to a grown man? Really?)
3. However, as a rabid fanboy, I was happy to see the return of Cigarette Smoking Man and the Lone Gunmen. I thought Gunmen's return was handled nicely; the dialogue rang nicely, like that from an episode involving the trio.
4. I was happy to see Doggett, but wonder what happened to Reyes.

In terms of writing, it is early to judge the storyline, but, for the most part, I like what I am reading.

The art, however, is too cartoon-y for my taste. It looks like something out of Highlights. I know IDW is not Marvel, and cannot afford Bryan Hitch, but, the style they selected really alienates the reader from the narrative and mood the creative team is trying to create.

Carter is just taking his sweet as time to write the script for some odd reason. Id love to see them return in miniseries or direct to tv features if they dont want to do that final motion picture. This whole internet espionage paranoia era that is starting to develop plays into the feel of the xfiles in a big way. I just want to see it come back as with the netflix/internet era the show has gathered a much larger cult following.

The comics have been pretty interesting actually. Gives me a nice fix of xfiles material no doubt.

The problem is not Chris Carter. It is all FOX not want to do one

Can't say I blame them after how terrible the second one did at the box office. Then again, opening a week after The Dark Knight didn't help.

I have a feeling the 'confirmations' of progress are just appeasements to fans. The cast/crew members have moved onto to other projects: Duchovny to 'Californication,' Anderson to theatre, smaller tv productions, and 'Hannibal.'

Personally, I would love to hear something about the fate of Carter's other film, Fencewalker...
