How was that fight supposed to go down in X2, if it had made it into the film?

Toad would have survived Storm's attack - although with a badly burned tongue - and been captured by Stryker's men after the X-Men leave the Statue of Liberty. Stryker uses the serum extracted from Mutant-143's spine to mind-control Toad and, when the X-Men enter the base to rescue Professor X, Stryker tells Toad to prevent Nightcrawler and Storm from releasing the captive students.

In this version, they'd be kept in cages attached to the ceiling by steel cables sustaining the cages. Nightcrawler and Storm enter the room and Toad attacks them. He then starts to sabotage the cages, cutting them from the cables so they'll fall and crush the students. Toad sabotages the 12 cages one by one, while Nightcrawler teleports inside them, teleports the students out and then teleports inside the next one. It's very quick and exaustive for Nightcrawler.

Finally, after saving the last student, Nightcrawler catches up to Toad and teleports him inside one of the cages that he has already sabotaged, and teleports out, leaving him trapped inside. The cage hits the floor and crushes Toad, killing him.

I guess that was all in the novelization. I never actually read any of the novelizatiins for the film. I was always under the impression the Toad/Nightcrawler fight took place in the beginning.

It was In a leaked script.It was cut because of budget reasons.

It's in the Script, actually. It's during the final battle. Toad is also the one with Stryker in the scene where Professor X deduces that Stryker staged the attack on the President and is introduced to Mutant 143.

Yes early on In the script there was no Deathstrike.Anne Reynolds was Stryker's assistant while some of the deathstrike stuff was handled by a mind controlled Toad.
It was during filming they changed Anne Reynolds Into Deathstrike.
