Sequels X-Men Live-Action TV Show in Development at Fox

Personally, I would love lesser known mutants getting a chance to shine. It would be cool to see the Alpha Flight characters at some point in the show, as I doubt they would ever show up in the movies. Just because they are lesser known doesn't mean they don't have any potential for good stories. To each his/her own.

Though FOX may have access to the team's mutant members, the rights to Alpha Flight probably resides at Marvel Studios. Marvel filed a trademark application on the name last year ( along with other movie properties like Rocket Raccoon, Black Panther and Ant Man), and Department H was referenced in Agents of SHIELD.

I'm a little rusty on those characters. I know Northstar and his sister are mutants. Who is off limits? I wonder if they can use the name "Alpha Flight" since both Marvel and Fox can use "Quicksilver" and "Scarlet Witch." Or can they? I don't remember how Evan Peters was named in the movie.

The recent trademark filing suggests Marvel Studios has the name, but FOX has control over every character identified as a mutant and introduced in an X-Title. I think Aurora and Northstar were the only mutants in the original roster.

It may be a situation like Big Hero 6, which was a sort of an Alpha Flight spin-off. Marvel Studios (before shipping it off to Disney Animation) controlled the basic idea, but would need to tinker with the roster if they want to translate AF to live action.

Well with Alpha Fight, the characters are tied to Wolverine and James and Heather Hudson appeared in Origins: Wolverine. Madison Jeffries was also a member of the X-Men and Marvel would never let that happen if they didn't believe that Fox already owns him.

I'm also pretty positive that Fox doesn't own the rights to Captain Britain since he had his own series back in the 70s and 80s that had nothing to do with the X-Men. Excalibur can't be done but Shadowcat, Nightcrawler and Colossus are already members of the X-Men and Pete Wisdom can be put on X-Force.

Also, people get confused when Cable and Rachel Summers are both present and the former is much more popular.

I agree that most likely Alpha Flight belongs to Marvel. Although some of the characters, including Aurora, Northstar, Shaman and Snowbird, are Mutants, I'm not so sure they would automatically be X-Men affilitaed or belong to Fox. Yes, Marvel wouldn't be able to call them "mutants", but that shouldn't stop them from using them. Alpha Flight just isn't an X-team, even though there have been connections, like Wolverine and Department H.

Some characters who started doing their own thing ended up in the X-Men and became staples. Wolverine is a great example. Same goes for Captain Britain. Yes, he had his own series for a while, but he became a staple member of Excalibur, so why wouldn't he be ellgible to Fox? Honestly, Fox could easily do Excalibur in the OT with an older Nightcrawler, Kitty, Colossus, Captain Britain, and Meagan. Wolfsbane and Pete Wisdom would also be possible. Also, Rachel Summers could be brought in in the future and explained well enough... See, Excalibur could work and the ties to Authurian legend would be great...

I also read this in another thread:

"Fox has a loophole whereby they can use all properties related to X-Men and Fantastic Four. This means that Captain Britain, Alpha Flight, Starjammers and Silver Surfer spin-offs are a possibility."

Hmm...

I'm pretty sure Marvel have Captain Britain and Alpha Flight, or at least part of them

My best guess is that Aplha Flight belongs solely to Marvel (Disney), while Captain Britain would likely be another shared commodity.

I don't see Disney doing a Captain Britain movie or show (but you never know), but in many ways it would make sense for Fox to do an Excalibur spin-off in the OT. Make it in the present as follows:

- Use Nightcrawler, Kitty, Colossus, Meagan and Captain Britain.
- You could use characters that weren't part of Excalibur per canon, but would maybe make sense based on the other characters being used. Specifically I'm talking about maybe using Iceman and Rogue...
- Use the whole Authurian Legend concept with Captain Britain.
- No dragon or Widget.
- Use the actors and actresses we know.

There's many ways to go from there. They could add Wolfsbane, and/or Rachell Summers (which would be interesting, and possibly lead to Jean and Cyclops cameos). Pete Wisdom could be brought in as a cynical pressence vying for Kitty's affection, causing the displeasure of Colossus.

Now, if this was a tv show, who would be the main (season 1) villain?

If it was a movie, who would be the origins movie villain?

^ Ooh, I've never seen that. What's that story about?

^ What, Excalibur?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excalibur_(comics)

In looking over the top villains for Excalibur, the best options IMO are:

Arcade

Although he has no superhuman powers, Arcade has a genius level I.Q. and a natural aptitude for mechanics, architecture and applied technology. A brilliant and self-taught designer, Arcade applies his talents to the construction of mobile amusement park-like deathtraps, which he calls "Murderworlds".

Black Tom Cassidy

180px-Blacktom.png

Cousin of Banshee, he's an Irish born mutant with the ability to fire energy beams from a wooden surface. He often uses shillelaghs as his weapon of choice and seems to have florakinesis.

In the comics he was often paired with the Juggernaught (too bad this character was ruined in Last Stand!). Is there any way to fix that to make Juggernaught usable in this new reality?

Ahab

245px-Ahab.png

Dr. Rory Campbell was a psychologist who worked with Exaclibur. He discovered the existence of an alternate reality in which he became the mutant hunting Ahab, creating and leading hordes of mutant trackers called "Hounds." Campbell became determined to prevent that future from ever happening.

Excalibur had captured a villain names Spoor (an Acolyte of Magneto) and Campbell built a special room to perform therapy on him. The room had built-in lasers to react to any hostile behavior and Campbell used tranquilizers while talking to Spoor so as to inhibit his mutant power. Spoor eventually used his powers to provoke Campbell into attacking him. As a result, the room's weapons fired at the scientist, costing him a leg. Campbell saw that his destiny of becoming Ahab was coming true, indicating that possibly it was this reality's future where Apocalypse took over.

Ahab has also been one of Apocalypse's Horsemen (Famine) in the comics.

Jamie Braddock

180px-Jamie-braddock.png

Oldest brother of Brian Braddock (and Betsy), he grew up to be successful, but then got caught up in some major gambling debts. He was turned insane by Doctor Crocodile.

Jamie sees the world as invisible string constructs, which he can pull to transform reality. He can only manipulate dense forms (phased beings have some level of resistance); formerly he needed to be close enough to touch the "cosmic filaments" things were composed of, but his range may have grown, based on recent events in his siblings' lives.

Spoor

Spoor is a mutant with the ability to secrete pheromones, allowing him to control others and used these powers to have people kill each other. Excalibur ally Dr. Rory Campbell tried to cure Spoor, but during the treatment Rory's hatred of mutants allowed Spoor to affect Rory to attack him. The aggression-tracking automatic security systems in Spoor's cell, known as the Pen, activated and a laser beam severed one of Campbell's legs.

I could see one movie/or tv series season focus on Spoor as a lesser villain, with Ahab as a main (or set up for future).

I could also see Merlyn as a character, even used as somewhat of a villain...

Interesting! But what part dot he X-Men play in a series based on King Arthur's myth? It's an interesting concept for a film and they've already referenced the myth on film before, I think in X2, with "The Once and Future King".

P.S. that wikipedia link doesn't work.

When did we last hear anything on this? I'm guessing the rumor was just that, a rumor. I still think Marvel retains television rights to everything. I would love to see proof otherwise, though.

Well the rumour said that it was gonna be announced at New York Comic Con and that didn't happen.

I am guessing that Disney got on their red lawyer phone in the offices & told them 2 stop fox after this rumor surfaced & made sure that fox reads the fine print in the contracts

Amagordo was mentioned in the first Captain America film. By that logic, Marvel Studios must also own Charles Xavier and Juggernaut.

That said, I don't see Fox being able to do Excalibur. Captain Britain had a long history of being a solo hero before he was tied to the X-Men and then with MI:13 after Excalibur. Alpha Flight were an X-Men spin-off team, they've only really interacted with the X-Men, Wyre who's only been an Alpha Flight villain appeared in the leaked Deadpool script, Northstar joined the X-Men, Alpha Flight only really show up in X-Men titles, etc.

So yes, Fox owns AF but no, Fox can't do Excalibur. Marvel can't do Excalibur but they can do both Captain Britain and MI:13 without Pete Wisdom who can always join X-Force.

FOX may control some of the traditional Alpha Flight characters, but I doubt the studio has use of the name. Earlier this year, Marvel filed a trademark application for a number of movie properties, including Age of Ultron, Black Panther, Irredeemable Ant Man - and Alpha Flight.

Big Hero 6 was an offshoot of Alpha Flight. Ronan, the Black Panther and the Inhumans first appeared in the Fantastic Four. And I was surprised that FOX has use of Viper and Marvel Studios could use Iron Patriot.

Until they show up on screen we don't truly know who controls which characters.

Heather Hudson appeared in X-Men Origins, so yes Fox can definitely use some of the Alpha Flight characters.

I totally disagree that Alpha Flight belongs to Fox. Alpha Flight IS NOT an X-Man title. Yes, the two teams have interacted, but so have the X-Men and every other team for that matter.

There are only a couple of "mutants" on the Alpha Flight team, but that does not even matter. The main interaction or connection is Department H and Wolverine, but again, that was only one small storyline. Again, Aplha Flight is not an X-Men spin off. If you still think it is, please explain how it's an X-Men spin-off. Meaning, X-Factor is a spin-off because X-Men characters formed the team. Same for New Mutants, X-Force and Excalibur. That is just not the case for Aplha Flight.

Now Captain Britain did have a solo comic, but he probably spent more time in Excalibur. I think it's a shared commodity. But even if it wasn't, he's not critical for Excalibur to be possible. Simply take the OT Kitty, Colossus, and maybe Rogue and Iceman, along with OT Nightcrawler, and have them form Excalibur. Guess you could add in Meagan and/or Pete Wisdom. It would be better with Captain Britain and the whole Merlyn story, but it's possible to do it without, though again, I can't see how Captain Britain is not at least a shared character.

Fox entertainment chairman Gary Newman confirms for TV Insider (aka TV Guide Magazine‘s new website) that the network is developing an X-Men TV series — no easy feat, given that while 20th Century Fox has film rights to the specially abled characters, any live-action TV project requires the blessing of Marvel, which is based out of ABC parent Disney.

“We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them,” Newman told the site, noting that any possible X-Men show “will not be on a fast track creatively.” Rather, it’d bow during the 2016-17 TV season at earliest.

Because of the delicate particulars involved, “This is just the deal,” Newman noted. “[N]ow we have to find the creative.”

Good. Hopefully it'll explore different parts of the X-world than the films (although they can still have some connections). I'm kind of partial to New Mutants/Generation X or X-Factor myself.

With '24's' Many Coto and Evan Katz overseeing, and 'Star Trek 3's' Patrick McKay and JD Payne writing.

While conversations to bring the franchise to the small screen are under way, sources indicate a deal is far from complete with Marvel — which owns the comic rights — still having to sign off on the deal.

Well that confirms the belief that Marvel do still have control of the TV rights after the Mutant X lawsuit. I wonder what Fox will try to offer Disney to get the TV series to happen.

while coto and katz are good choices to run this i am pessimesic if fox has to get approval from marvel. There is nothing recent to suggest marvel would go for that with lack of merchandize for FC,The Wolverine, and DOFP.How X-Men is being treated by marvel in comics including killing off wolverine and deadpool soon to killed off and uncertiny what the new marvel universe after secret wars will mean for X-men and mutants. Now could i be wrong sure. But,recent history doesn't bode well.

If i am wrong it may not be accident the launch would be in 2016.with 3 films coming 2016 may be big for x-men in films.added possable TV show.

I can imagine Marvel won't play ball, or at least won't play ball unless they get some benefit. Maybe the right to use the term mutant for a few of its characters?

Money is not going to get the deal done. Marvel is holding all the cards, so FOX is going to have to part with something of value in order to get X Men:The Series on the air.

I would rank Disney's wish list as:

1) Distribution rights to Star Wars (Episode IV) - obviously

2) Galactus and the Silver Surfer - Marvel's already requested those characters come over in the Daredevil negotiation. FOX keeps the FF for a while, Marvel gets to expand their cosmic universe.

3) FF family character rights - Marvel does not appear to be at all happy with the Tranktastic Four. Would a September 2015 reversion of the First Family rights grease the skids for a TV show?

The great thing for all concerned is that the two companies are talking. Could an agreement lead to Disney Infinity figures, cooperation on scheduling or (shudder) a multi studio crossover? It's certainly exciting to think about.
