Sequels X-Men Live-Action TV Show in Development at Fox

Sony did a "play it safe" renegotiation with Marvel a few years back. It improved the overall relationship while still keeping the Spider-Man films separate. Look where we are now...

What you mean when marvel did Sony a favour by buying the merchandising rights to Spider-Man? Or at least it was something to that degree which helped Sony because of financial issues

Sony were stubborn with Spider-Man until they had no choice

From what I know, Marvel bought the merchandise rights to Spidey in exchange for Sony to keep the movie rights. From what I know the time period is much smaller than the 7-8 years gap from movie to movie for Fox to keep the rights. The Sony is 3 years or so, again, from what I know. So, they were going to lose the movie rights in 2010-2011 or something like that. And that's why a Spider-Man 4 was announced for 2010 release if I recall correctly...

Yep, Sony leaks suggested that the Spider-Man clock is MUCH shorter than other deals. Less than the gap between 3 and Amazing. The deal they made gave Marvel film merchandise and television animation, while Sony got out of giving Marvel a percentage and apparently got an extension. They made a deal, relationships improved (there really were talks of doing the Oscorp thing in The Avengers...), and now they're playing nice. Oh, and Marvel and Sony even applied to renew the Sinister Six trademark for film, so Sony's probably still getting that annual Spidey they so desperately wanted.

The Sony deal helped both parties, simple as that.

No. It was Marvel's piece of the films in exchange for Sony's piece of the merchandise.

During the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011, the Company completed a two-way transaction to simplify our relationship with Sony Pictures. In this transaction, the Company purchased Sony Pictures participation in Spider-Man merchandising, while at the same time, Sony Pictures purchased from the Company our participation in Spider-Man films. This transaction will allow the Company to control and fully benefit from all Spider-Man merchandising activity, while Sony Pictures will continue to produce and distribute Spider-Man films

It was more complicated than merch for %. That's the deal that got Sony's Spectacular show cancelled and allowed Disney to make Ultimate.

That was a separate deal. The tv rights was 2009 and the merchandise one was 2011.

Marvel paid Sony $278 million and released their BO % in exchange for Sony's 25% stake in the Spider-Man LP, which controlled ALL Spidey merchandise.

I read a rumor that the FOX movie licensing agreements were extended from 5 to 7 years as part of the Mutant X settlement, but the terms were not disclosed. Sony's Spidey deal appears to still be five years, but I doubt reversion is an option with the two studios in cahoots.

Sony's deal was implied in one e-mail to have a really oddball clock (I want to say three year nine month). It also showed why a deal really would benefit both studios. Sony, despite having full Spider-Man film rights, had a huge list of random characters they couldn't use (despite being obvious Spider-Man characters). X-Men likely has weird things that could be straightened out as well.

Seperate?
Not interested!
Connected to movies or go fu..yourself!!!

We would have to believe fox would join forces with marvel even though they ain't struggling financially and the X-Men series is in a good place right now while Sony were shrugging off joining marvel for a good long time even though they were not as financially secure as fox and pretty much only had Spider-Man and his rogues gallary to work with

i think that would be giving fox a lot of credit

Fox's film franchise is significantly less profitable than Marvel's under the current deal. Big Hero 6 made less at the box office than DoFP, but DoFP was less profitable. Fant4stic lost Fox more money than DoFP made them at the box office when all was said and done.

:whatever:

If the end product is good and all you people end up doing is sittting around and b****ing about the fact that it isn't connected to the films, this will officially be the most persnickety section in the entire Hype.

Why is that so important? What if it ends up being a great series based on the X-Men comics? Can't people accept and enjoy anything that stands on its own two feet anymore? Does everything now have to be a small part in a huge mosaic in order for it to be 'worthy'?

Marvel won their huge bet with the 'cinematic universe' - doesn't mean that everyone else has to do the exact same thing. I'm kinda getting sick of the constant "do it like Marvel Studios" rants. Sometimes it comes across as if they've invented freaking movies and TV series. And I'm not bashing Marvel/Disney. I've liked lots of their movies and series. But come on...

It's kind of a pity that you can't really discuss movies and series on their own artistic merits anymore. Most of the time conversations fall into the same ol' "do they have a plan? They don't have a plan. They need a plan."

It does confirm that many of the X-Men fans 'round here only care about the film version. No attachment to the actual franchise, eh?

EDIT: Kinda like those "X-Men" fans that loved the Fantastic Four when it was part of the X-Men Cinematic Universe, but promptly disregarded it after it was pushed to the side...

Yeah, but this was also the same year the studio made the most money. The same conglomerate that, according to the F4 thread, has the power to purchase WB.

The studio had all their eggs in the 2014 basket, plus the big studios are kinda in a place where change is inevitable. WB, Paramount, and Sony have all been in... unusual positions. One of them probably won't be around long-term.

The idea of expanding universes excite people, which is obviously the reason you want x-men to join the MCU

Nah, I wouldn't be so dramatic. I'd say the major studios are all pretty safe, with Paramount probably being the weakest at this point. But that's the usual ups and downs of Hollywood.

Not everyone finds it THAT exciting. I, for example, find individual quality movies and series very exciting. If they happen to be part of an 'expanding universe,' fine. If not, that's fine, as well. As long as talented writers and directors are free to explore these properties in a fun and exciting way, I'm interested. And the X-Men franchise has got some interesting and promising talent on board.

I am sad that people just dismiss the shows just because they aren't connected to other things. Even if the show potentially is very good.

I'm not outright dismissing it, I'm just a little bummed. I'm sure it's going to be a great show either way it just seems like wasted potential.

DC does this all the time.

If Hellfire isn't connected then I can see that being weird and frustrating since it's taking a direct que from First Class with the setting and era, but with Legion it may be for the better. Who knows. I understand wanting an expanded universe I'm just not sure how much these shows can actually bring as a whole or with cameos.

If they are willing not to have it connected then I'm kinda disappointed they are not doing an A list roster that can be developed. Too many popular X-Men need screen time and development.

On the flipside, I don't see how this isn't a good thing for Hellfire. I mean, do we really want a repeat of Agents of Shield?
