X-Men - Part 7

Maybe because IvX was awful and he completely assasinated Emma's character by throwing away 30 years of development.

IvX was probably all editorally mandated, anyway. People should just enjoy Astonishing. A tiny minority of fans are boycotting

The book was amazing. It had no business being this good. BEST X-book in years. That debut issue was even better than Blue #1, which I loved.

People are clamoring over [blackout]Xavier's[/blackout] return but I was more happy to see that Warren is FINALLY back. I waited years for that and it was refreshing to read a book featuring him and not Hippie, Death/Archangel or the Drone

Really enjoyed Astonishing. A bit odd that they ignored Bishop's latest relationship with the X-men while hitting on other's pretty hard.

I think if you are annoyed with Gold, then Astonishing is very much up your alley.

Did they? I didnt read the series, but I thought Bishop's relationship with the X-men was handled and fixxed in Uncanny X-force which Psylocke also starred in

I took it as still being hippie religious Warren. You could tell with the occasional "saved" and "hope" lines he threw in there. And if it wasn't that version that I'd be irritated as I can't stand when things are discareded without explanation. Warren, ever since Remender's Uncanny X-Force run, has been gone. But man, I'm eager for that to happen. I hate this version of Warren.

I don't remember much about that book, but yeah, I'm pretty sure it was dealt with there. Bishop was mind controlled. It's all good.

And MAN is it good seeing him with the X-Men again.

Nah hippie is gone. Hippie had no memories and no relationships with his former teammates. He barely had a personality and was just fun loving, thinking he was an actual Angel. He definitely was not Warren. We got today was classic Warren, reminiscent of the classic days pre-Archangel. He was heroic, and like his old self, connecting with his team and feeling more personable with them than we've seen in years. Him swooping in to save Rogue, felt like old times when he did that with Jean in the 60s

BTW, did you not read Bunn's UXM? I ask bc you reference UXF while ignoring UXM. He had the drones and the Hippie merge into one being. What we got was Archangel with Warren's memories but he wasnt quite back. I beleive this is the first time since then that we got Warren and Archangel is suppressed and taking a backseat. Warren has access to the metallic wings without having to revert to his Death form

If that's the case, then there needs to be a MASSIVE explanation as to where the hippie went. That'd be like if Psylocke just randomly started showing up in her original british body with no explanation. It wouldn't make sense.

Again, did you NOT read UXM? That was already explained. He got a complete arc devoted to this plotline in Apocalypse Wars

Hippie and the Archangel drones all merged into one being. He was last seen with Xorn during IvX prior to his appearance in Secret Empire on New Tian. Throughout this he remained as Archangel but AXM is his first appearance back as Warren as he explains he's keeping the darker side of himself at bay

I don't think I finished the Bishop arc of Uncanny X-force. It's been a while.

I do like the idea of [blackout]Xavier becoming a psionic being like Shadow King. [/blackout]

Seeing Warren was a breath of fresh air. This is an all-star team, and Soule is drawing just enough from their past relations and friendships.

I wonder if this will be a new status quo or something resolved by the end of the arc.

No need to be rude. Especially being that UXM did not in ANY WAY explain Warren's return... as in at all. Litterally... hippie/angelic Warren merged with the Archangel drone and became one with it. As of the end of that arc he was Hippie Warren in the mind of Archangel questioning who he is. There definitely wasn't any word on the return of the actual Warren psyche (which as last we saw in Remender's run had died and passed on). By the arc you referenced, it should have just been Archangel and no Warren at all (or Hippie Warren if any). The jump from that to Warren being Warren is completely unexplained and makes no sense. And being that he's referenced hope and things like that in this newest issue... it leads me to believe that this is the same Hippie Warren as we've seen before. Though perhaps he's evolving to be less absent minded.

Though I'd be super excited to have classic Warren back... I hope this isn't the case right now without explanation. I hate plot holes. Even ones that are later revealed. I like chronology :)

Warren's status was left unresolved after that arc but his return was most definitely explained. It was confused and more convoluted than it needed to be but its not accurate that there was any explanation. To his credit, Bunn had originally planned an issue centered around Archangel which presumably would have dealt with Warren's psyche but that got cut bc of IvX and then the series was cancelled for Resurrxion

I'll have to reread it as a whole. I might have missed something, but the final issue didn't seem to reveal anything about real Warren. Last we saw that aspect of his psyche is dead and gone. But who knows, we'll see as the new book progresses.

Yeah, a search of the schedule says they had a panel yesterday at 9pm PST.

Hey they had me at Gambit but having him working with Fantomex made this new Astonishing golden for me. It's certainly better than the first arc of the relaunched Blue which outright bored me.

Thanks!

Lots of Legacy and Generations stuff. Relevant to the X-men:
"Generations: Phoenix"
Jean vs Emma in "Jean Grey: Psych Wars" in the Fall
Blue and Gold will crossover in a mojo event featuring Longshot and Rachel as a Hound.
"X-Men: Grand Design" by Ed Piskor: "a six-issue series that will feature one decade of X-Men history per issue, starting in the 60s and moving through the Claremont era to modern day. Each issue will feature a decade’s worth of stories."

No game-changing news, but things look alright.

I liked Gambit in Gold too!

Gambit just vanished in Gold. That was really weird.

Gambit was just a guest appearance in Gold. He is on the actual team in Astonishing.

Gambit and Fantomex is such a great pairing, kind of surprised it hadn't happened before.

They had a fun quickie scene in the x-men vrs Inhuman crossover. It was probably the inspiration for pairing them up again. :)

Blue continues to be fun. Really pleased with how they resolved the mystery of the smart Blackbird. I didn't see it coming.

Blue is great for the way it manages all of its moving parts. BUT I'm not thrilled with what's happening to Emma. I wish her mental breakdown wasn't vilified in IvX and I don't want to see it continue here. People hate the 05 because they crap on the legacies of their adult counterparts and I don't want to see Emma dragged down with them. But I trust Bunn and am interested in Psych Wars in Jean's book.

Iceman #3 was pretty good too. It's my favourite issue so far. Grace has really nailed Iceman's voice. I really appreciate this book's existence and the surprisingly nuanced approach to its subject matter.

As far as th latest issue of Blue, I was more pleased with the return of [BLACKOUT]Polaris[/BLACKOUT]!

They actually first paired up in Civil War

Prior to that Fantomex met the AOA Gambit in UXF

Yeah, Gambit and Fantomex together is great. I love basically everything about Astonishing in general, though.

I've hated Emma since Morrison started writing her and have grown to hate her more as time passed. She's never felt like a genuine X-Man to me, and due to that I'm loving this heal turn and hope it just keeps on escalating. I want Scott and Jean to both return and kick the crap out of her :)

Sorry for the negativity, but I sorta link Emma with the downfall of the X-Men as a franchise as a whole starting from Morrison's run. It's only STARTING to feel like the X-Men to me again because she ISN'T present.

Me, too. I haven't enjoyed an X-book that much in a little while. :)
