Can someone please explain to me how Snakes on A Plane after all the promotion and hype only ended up making 13 million at the box office this weekend?

I get the feeling that most of the hype was internet based. I didn't see many people talking about it outside of the internet and there seemed to be very few TV ads/newspaper ads etc compared to a normal film.

Same here. No one is going ga-ga over Snakes on a plane. I hear more people talk about POTC2 and that new dance flick Step-Up.I think thats going to be huge here.

Is it too early to start tracking the Japan figures? I saw that Superman Returns opened with $3.2 million which is slightly higher than X2's opening of $3.0 m but not much above PotC2's 5th weekend. It looks like american comic book movies are still not a big draw.

we must take in consideration that X2 opened in Japan one week after it opened in USA. X3 is opening 3 months later, so i guess this is a pretty awesome number, since mostly everyone who wanted to see the movie could have aleardy bootleged.

X3 is in about 60 screens in the US.Its not been shown here anymore though. Da Vinci Code on the other hand is, as hard as it may seem to believe, still in theatres. Superman Returns has been pulled from some theatres (including my local theatre) here even though it was released in August. POTC2 is still doing well, its nr 2 in the box office top-10 and theres no sign of it dropping anytime soon.
