This movie was going to be insanely popular no matter what.

Insanely popular = over 100 million

Insanely popular with NO competition = 132 million

Yep. Pirates was bound to make a killing no matter what stood in its path.

You know, one can argue that it was the ineptitude of Superman Returns that led to POTC: DMC having the greatest opening of all-time.

About as much as one can argue that x-3 suckiness made people lose faith in comic book movies and that's why SR didn't do so well... :o

^ I missed out on the whole back and forth thing but you were suggesting that X3 sucked which is why Supes did bad but to me Catwoman was the definition of suckiness though people flocked to X3. I realize you were being sarcastic so I was pulling your chain. :)

Catwoman in name only. ;)

Did anyone see the new video where Singer looks like he has regrets of taking on Superman. He looked like he was about to cry, when they asked him about Pirates success. Do anyone here feel bad for him?As much as I wasn't exactly happy with his rendition of X-men I still felt bad for the guy. X-men 3 beat out Superman which is something that was not expected by many. The video is below

Well, I feel bad for Singer because certainly SR is a better movie than Pirates. On the other hand...I´ll be quite happy if X3 beats SR at the final B.O.! :D

I think Cars might catch X3. So far the leaders should end up like this:

Pirates
Cars
X-Men: The Last Stand
Da Vinci Code

after that...who cares though I'm really curious as to how well Rocky Balboa will perform. I'd guess 60-70 million tops.

Next year:

Spiderman 3
Pirates 2
FF2
Ghost Rider

I think Cars is gonna catch X3 for sure. I wasn't so certain before but it's legs are better than X-men's have been. It's not gonna be by a HUGE margin though. X3 is gonna top out at about 234 or so and Cars will probably hit 240.

wow he does look like hes about to cry. Thats what happens when u think Superman will make more then X-men. He underestimated X-men. oh well serves him right. I never liked what he did w/the X-men movies anyways. It shows that with all the money he still cant make a kick ass movie. Plus he said he didnt like flying yet superman is flying all the time. Whethere he like it or not Flying is essential to characters like Storm who are most of the time flying not walking or running around :down

That makes me want to go under a blanket and cry. :( SR was better than POTC2 imo.

Man, felt bad for Singer. Can't say i'm surprised by the way he reacted to the question though. He's not a very articulated guy. I think Ian Mc Kellen confirmed this on X-men DVD where he said something like 'Bryan doesn't always know how to say what he wants, but in his mind, he knows exactly what he wants'

Also, i found it kind of weird how the reporter asked Singer, Brandon and Kate about how well their competition is doing in the box office.

It was...you know they'd ask Kate, since her boyfriend is Orlando Bloom, but asking the rest of them was just out of place. I think Singer just wasn't expecting a POTC question. Only adds fuel to the SR haters fire, too. :(

What's sad is that all the publicity they do for SR from here on out is going to be about how they got squashed by "Pirates" in it's second weekend, which they don't deserve. SR was a good film.

Nahh....why would anyone not see Superman because they didn't like a movie based on an entirely different comic book?

I think it was obviously bad timing, and the fact that it's a more 'adult' story--meaning less action than your typical comics film.

I loved it, though.

Man I never liked Singer's sedated approach to the xmen, although, I did think it kind of fit with Claremont's take. I loved Ratners amped X3 but I feel for Singer here. This was not an easy thing to watch. I don't know if this is how he is as McKellen said but he really seemed to be suffering.

Its never good to see a fellow human being suffering.

I don't think that Singer deserved this. Man the Movie did not deserve this. I've seen worse do much better. I recall how Mr and Mr Smith made all that money and I felt while watching it like I was eating chalk. It looked good but had no real substance, (is that the Brad and Angelina pretty boy and big lips effect), but they made lots of money.

I think that in all the factors that may have hurt SR 's BO it may just not have had a good marketing and release date.

POTC2 was a sun (135m) and it burned up supes in its heat, sucked all the anticipation for itself. Now that is ironic, Superman who needs the sun could not stand the heat.

Sorry Singer I thouhgt you did an ok job, I Hope that at least he gets a chance to redeem himself. I can't stand for people to be all sad and downcast.

That video was disturbing. I hope WB cuts him some slack.

Superman didn't do well because of many reasons... like i have said from day one...

1) Superman is as iconic as mickey mouse and bugs bunny... you pic and actor that doesnt have the exact look (not a tom welling and not a chris reeves) your going to loose people. Agree or disagree i don't care, but when the teaser hit with HP:GOF PEOPLE ACTUALLY BOO'd

2) They made a HUGE vital mistake by making it a sequal... Batman Begins did well because it started over clean and fresh the old movies were good, but its been 20 years.. dont make a sequal to it, it wont fit.

3) Lex... again... People have scene lex from the movies, the cartoons, and from smallville, hes played out.. give the audience something they havent seen thats hollywoods biggest mistake these days, there afraid to take chances... thats why we have sequal after sequal and Tv show turned movie, year after year.

4) The baby... Why do that? WHY... now there stuck with the super brat, you cant kill him, and if you depower him he's still going to be there. The baby will forever be in the sequals now, and now be in need of expanding parts... and less focus on supes

and finally
5) The dumb ass marketing genius who decided to put it a week before pirates (that man should have been fired a long time ago)

People want to see something different when they go to a movie theater, something they haven't seen before, and SR was not that. It was the same hero that they can watch on the TV in there own house every week, and the same hero who had 4 movies already. All Bryan did was put Superman in different situations of a humanity drivin life.. rather then of a superhuman life. and ditched the idea of a villain for supes to actually fight.

agree or dissagree... i could care less

Thats the problem right there... it shouldn't have been an "OK" job... it should have been an AMAZING, or GREAT job... and it was just mediocre and "decent"

SR was a good film, it just wasn't a good superman film in my opinion.

There're parts of the movie that i hated, but there were also parts of the movie that i liked.

I liked Brandon performance as both Kent and Superman.I just hope that after this, he won't be remembered as the 'george Lazenby' of the Superman Movies...because the way things are looking right now, there won't be any sequel to SR. I think to the fans, SR will be remembered as the "hulk'of DC movies.

Singer should've waited and just finished his planned X-trilogy before moving on to another franchise. In my opinion, it wasn't a very wise career decision that he made.

Domestic refers to the US box office. International is anythng that is not US box office, and worldwide is the combination of both.

Yep. Superman has been interpreted countless times in every medium, whereas the X-Men are fresher. Watching that video is worse than watching James Marsden grasping at words trying to describe Cyclops' dilemma regarding the cure.
