This Roman in particular isn't good at all. Now if we're talking silent, badass, and intense Roman? Then that's what fans loved and wanted to see before Vince watered him down. The blame isn't solely on him really, he's just doing what he's told, although he should have enough pull to where he can speak up and say "Vince, this isn't working. Let me do my own thing."
The fans weren't given a reason to care. Rollins and Ambrose, both got new looks, personalities and entrance music. Roman stayed mostly the same, only they tried to make him a "cool badass baby face" but he just came off as bit of a *****e. When the Shield split he really should have been the "quiet wronged man" type of character, just seething in rage because of Rollins betrayal. Actually have the Authority stack the odds against him, push him down the card, make it feel like he is dangerous and they are whatever it takes to keep him away from Rollins. Build it up to where he realizes he can't get his hands on Rollins, he'll make Rollins come to him by winning the Rumble and getting the title at WrestleMania. Make the championship secondary to wanting to destroy Rollins.
That could have got the crowd behind him. Though the Bryan/Rumble issue would have still probably been a tough thing to work around.
