Young Justice Cartoon

It likely is bull****. They really should just release the trades. But comic companies never take the simple, easy, logical answer, do they?

Okay, some more tidbits about the show.

Kelly Hu did a video interview for Buzzfocus and stated that she'd done voice work for "YOUNG JUSTICE", but didn't reveal her role. She recently played Ms. Li in "BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD", but Wiesman fans will remember she played Sha Shan in "SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN".

Greg also dishes out some statistics about the show here:
http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=868

It reveals a very good reason why we haven't seen as much animated content in teasers for this as we have for "AVENGERS: EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES" yet: NOT ONE episode is finished yet. As of now, 17 episodes out of 26 have been written, and all 26 have been assigned to writers. Episode 18 is being scripted as we type. The voice recording for the first 13 episodes have been done, and post-production on the pilot is expected to begin later in September. As in Greg is literally still waiting for the animated episode 1 to be completed and sent over from overseas. By the time November comes along, Cartoon Network may only be able to air 2-3 new episodes because that may be all that is ready. The show is being assembled very quickly. The animation that has been shown so far may have been finished test animation or just clips that were sent over so the production team knows the animators are on the right track.

He mentions that 147 DC characters are within the first 17 episodes. 47 actors are part of the overall cast and about 11 perform for every episode. The writing staff consists of himself, Jon Wiesman (a relation, but I don't know what, maybe a brother), Peter David, Andrew Robinson, Tom Pugsley, Nicole Dubac, and producer Brandon Vietti is also involved.

As a bump, maybe a nice summary of Wiesman's writing staff for the show is in order. Greg Wiesman himself needs little introduction, best known for being the creative force behind "GARGOYLES", "W.I.T.C.H." and "SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN", as well as having written an issue of ASM along with some GARGOYLES comics and various episode work here and there. Probably his only low-lights were some episodes he wrote of "THE BATMAN", some of which weren't that hot. He's also written episodes here and there for "BEN 10", "KIM POSSIBLE" and an episode of "BATMAN: BRAVE AND THE BOLD".

Peter David also needs little introduction, as he is a long time comic book writer who wrote YOUNG JUSTICE as a comic (as well as long runs on X-FACTOR and INCREDIBLE HULK) and is writing for this TV series as well. Other TV writing he has done has included two episodes of "BABYLON 5", one of "BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE" and 17 episodes of the blink-and-miss sci-fi comedy, "SPACE CASES" from the mid 90's.

Andrew Robinson has no relation to the actor of the same name (who played the Scorpio killer in "DIRTY HARRY", among many other parts). He was one of Wiesman's staff writers on "W.I.T.C.H." (3 episodes) and "SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN" (6 episodes). He's also written episodes of "IRON MAN: ARMORED ADVENTURES" and "TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED" between Wiesman jams. One of Robinson's TSSM episodes, "GANGLAND", may as well have featured the best fight sequence in any Marvel TV animation (a duel between Tombstone, Doc Ock, Spider-Man, and Silvermane).

Nicole Duboc is a former actress, best known as Robin on "MAJOR DAD", which ran four seasons on CBS from 1989-1993 (and aired in syndication on USA). She's been a writer ever since, working with Wiesman on "W.I.T.C.H." and writing 3 episodes of "SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN" 's second season. She's also written three episodes of "MARVEL SUPER HERO SQUAD SHOW".

Tom Pugsley is a newcomer to "Team Wiesman". His most notable streak of TV writing was working on "THE MUMMY: SECRETS OF THE MEDJAI", an animated series based off of "THE MUMMY" movie series that ran from 2001-2003; he produced the show and wrote 10 episodes of it. Since then he's gotten episodes of various series here and there, including an episode of "TEEN TITANS", "BATMAN: BRAVE AND THE BOLD", "THE BATMAN" (during the first, worst season), and some various "BEN 10" work. Probably the brightest spot on his IMDB credit list is 4 episodes of "MEN IN BLACK: THE SERIES" (which was an underrated show that ran four seasons during the late 90's on Kid's WB, right around when "BATMAN BEYOND" was in it's prime).

Brandon Vietti is also a newcomer to "Team Wiesman", and while he is a producer on this show, and Wiesman states that he's pitching in for some writing work on scripts as well, most of his credits are in directing, especially for DC animation. He directed "THE BATMAN VS. DRACULA" (which was surprisingly good), "SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY" and "BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD", as well as directing large batches of episodes of "THE BATMAN", "LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES" and "BATMAN: BRAVE AND THE BOLD". He was also a storyboard artist for quite a few productions, including the "WONDER WOMAN" DTV that everyone says was great, but I didn't see.

Stephanie Lemelin, who voices Artemis for "YOUNG JUSTICE", describes her character as "A hot mess."

Interesting.

Greg Wiesman also talks about the casting process: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=12525

Greg Wiesman said:
I will say the obvious though, which is that we auditioned literally hundreds of actors to cast Superman and our six lead teens. And these six actors were the best. (And if you're wondering why we auditioned for Superman and the six, it's because we wanted the same actor to play both Superman (age 33) and his clone Superboy (age 16). Nolan does an amazing job at playing both characters, making them sound distinct and yet genetically the same.)

Oh, and in case anyone's wondering, I have a 132 page (and growing) timeline for the series that does indeed list every character's age.

Wiesman, who is trying not to leak any more spoilers, stomps out the rumor about "YOUNG JUSTICE" being in continuity with "JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS": http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=12516

Greg Wiesman said:
Okay, this is another misreport and/or misinterpretation.

We are NOT using the character designs from "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths". We ARE using Phil Bourassa, the character DESIGNER from Crisis, so obviously there are going to be some similarities in style and design. But not a single character was taken from that DVD in anything but pitch materials, i.e. what we used to help sell the show. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER has been redesigned for the actual production of Young Justice. Will there be similarities? Of course. Some characters may be more similar than others, but that's it.

We simply love Phil's work. But there was no mandate. We're not in continuity with any past DC/WB animation project. We are not REUSING anything.

None of this is meant to imply criticism of what came before. Rather, I'm simply trying to clarify what's really going on and stop the spread of certain rumors.

Thanks for the information. =)

Dread, you've always done a great job posting information. And your reviews kick as much ass the best series that you review. I just wanted to let you know that.

My one small quibble is that you often misspell Greg Weisman's name. No worries, these things happen, but I find it a bit distracting when I read your posts. Again, just a small quibble.

I do have some annoying typo's that I can't kick, and that's one of them. The other is I sometimes swap a letter between "think" and "thing". Weisman it is.

DC, you're really pissing me off...

I wish they would give us some info on what Superboy's gonna be like on the show.

DC, you're really pissing me off...

Yeah. Part me wants to get these mini-trades, but the wiser part of me is telling me to stay on my guts and demand proper trades.

Way to bring down Drz, blanty, I comend you.

have there been any more pics for this show outside of the initial poster and that video from comiccon?

not really...just the character designs...nothing from any of the episodes

legit shots of the character designs or spy pics? if they're decent would you mind posting a link?

they were legit, released by WB when they announced the show at Comic Con....they're in this thread somewhere....might want to try the first few pages

The show debuts in November. From what Greg Weisman implied on a Q&A, a major reason for the lack of additional footage or peaks is that the finished episodes are JUST coming back from overseas as we type and need to be edited and prepared for airing. He planned to work on wrapping up the pilot for airing this month. The show is being assembled on several levels at once and part of me imagined that by November, the 4-5 episodes that CN is likely to air before going into repeats could be the first 4-5 episodes actually available to air. It takes at least 10-18 months on average for finished animation to return from overseas, after all, and then it has to be edited, mixed with sound, cleaned up, maybe some additional ADR tracks from the actors, etc.

I do agree that "mini-trades" are probably the worst and pettiest way to go about it. At least when Marvel is like that, they release it as a digest for about $8. Full on trades for YJ would be ideal. Is it really that difficult? Do they have to outrun a boulder and some natives to get things reprinted from the vaults at DC?

Join the league! Fans were given their first glimpse of Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis this past July at Comic-Con International: San Diego. But this panel will offer far more than just a glimpse, as producers Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles) answer questions from fans and show footage from this highly anticipated series.

A one-hour special event of Young Justice will premiere in November 2010 on Cartoon Network, and the series begins in 2011. Young Justice is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and is based upon characters from DC Comics.
