I also think Azkaban is the gateway movie. It’s when the movie series gets a life of its own instead of these rote regurgitations of the books, INO.

I tend to be of the opinion that NONE of the films captured the magic of the books at all. But Azkaban as a film had a certain magic of its own for sure, and was easily the best movie of the bunch, imo. And that's all Cuaron. He may not make movies all that often, but that guy remains one of my favorite directors on the planet.

But as a huge fan of that book, I can't lie, the lack of the Marauders' story was the first brutal omission from the books in that series. Almost as brutal as the omission of Voldemort's story in Half-Blood Prince, aka, the part that made that book so freakin' good.

This question reminds me of a dog that hangs out at the plant where I work. Its only comfortable around one of the employees there, a forklift driver it follows around. When the driver leaves, the dog goes home. The company even put the dog on some of their shirts.

The decision to try and get all the movies under 2:20 without credits just because will always annoy me for these reasons. Especially as few movies have credits the length of the Potter films. Even GoF and HBP are really around 2:20 with the monster credits. How did OotP end up one of the shorter movies?

Long story short, it was a 3 hour film. Mark Day and Yates chopped out nearly an hour of material. Some of the scenes that were cut: A longer scene of the Marauder kids flashback, Mcgonagall being injured by Aurors, the various rooms in the Department of Mysteries, the full duel and banter between Sirius and Bella, a scene on the school grounds after the Department of Mysteries scenes. Supposedly there was even a St Mungos scene shot and cut from the film.

Some clips and pictures of the cut scenes is on the web and set reports account for some of the other cut scenes. What's worse is WB offered all the directors an opportunity to do an extended cut for the Ultimate Edition bluray releases.
